  1. you could do worse than to download or buy skinny puppy's last album, the greater wrong of the right
  2. actually, i think this is one of those "i'll be there with 2" = "i'll be there with 5" type of gigs. there's quite a buzz about this gig, i'm peeing my pants already! bioband-diversity is good, i don't get out much
  3. i tend to use ernie balls, i like their power / beefy slinky ranges. i've tend to stick to the beefy range since they've gone on sale. i downtune to drop B with a les paul, and the guitar also takes a fair beating, yet it manages to stay pretty reasonably in tune. it depends as much on your guitar setup as it does on the strings you buy. beefy slinkys are nice because they are very heavy down low, but rather medium towards the top. what strings are you breaking most regularly? i used to snap a lot of D strings.
  4. for what it's worth, i actually agree with stuart. the intro sets the scene for something that the song doesn't deliver - the stark contrast in style and eq between the intro and the song just sounds wrong, to me. the song itself is based on some pretty cheesy riffs, and to be honest sounds like a poor wildhearts b-side. i feel bad saying that actually, because wildhearts b-sides are for the most part as good and often better than their album tracks. the bass and guitar melodies are slightly reminiscent of them nonetheless. the breakdown clich at about 3 minutes seems like a wasted opportunity to throw something different into the song. hey, it's your song and that's what writing is about, expressing things how you feel and want. but i would have at least had the vocalist singing over it and the bass doing something more expressive. the vocals are ok, but are pretty lacklustre. the voice sometimes reminds me of shirley manson, but without the balls. i can see her voice going one of a couple of ways, like shirley manson, if the song suited it better and she could be a bit more aggressive whilst holding onto the tuning and softer dynamic ranges in other areas; or she could go for the punk yelpy thing that sharon from the videos seems to do quite well. and that girl from bis. when she was in bis. it's just very pub rock, which i think is such a tired and crowded area to place your songwriting efforts into. the guitar solo at the end only helps to push it further into pub rock territory. it depends what you like i suppose. i've had similar feelings before about another band that had a girl singer up front (think it may have been girl said no, but not sure), it just seems like such a waste. girls are totally different vocally to guys, and to me it sounds like she is trying to sing like a bloke. i usually prefer girls to sing much more delicately, or much more aggressively, or at least a mix of styles to keep the interest there. for example, there's a girl in a band locally called 67, and she has a beautiful voice - but when i saw them live, she seemed to sing the same sort of parts - that very delicate, very high, elizabeth fraser sort of ethereal sound. i was going to say beth gibbons (noting as well that 67 do a cover of a portishead song), however beth gibbons has a huge range and uses loads of vocals styles when she sings from high and spacey to gravelly and dirty. a good example of someone local (well, was local) that knows their voice and knows where it is suited is jo mccafferty. apart from the fact that she is a technically good singer, she does the dynamics thing very well with her voice, and doesn't need to extend over a great pitch range to show a variety of emotional styles in her vocal (even though she can and does).
  5. i take it you've never been to cafe drummonds on the weekend then.
  6. channel4 news just told me that i'd probably pay half as much council tax with lib dems as i would with labour or tories, if local income tax was in place. which would be nice. i see no problems in the rich getting taxed more, at the end of the day, they still have MORE fucking money than just about everyone else, so what the fuck do they moan for. maybe i'm being naive, but lib dem tax policies seem like some sort of attempt to narrow the gap between rich and poor, which seems a great idea to me. if all these richo's didn't have 200 quid a month car loans and 600 quid a month mortgages then they wouldn't moan about paying an extra grand a year in council tax.
  7. have you thought of contacting CLS, they are usually a good bet for second hand stuff
  8. did anyone see alex salmond on that scottish 500 program or whatever it's called last night? i forgot how much of a personable bloke he was, it's amazing the party kept john whiney so long. i don't know if i'd vote for SNP though. all i know is that i'm not voting conservative or labour (i voted labour last time). probably going to be lib dems i think, though they sent round a really stupid questionnaire with no-brainer questions like "do you like bad stuff?" and "would you like to eradicate poverty?" and "even now, you wouldn't let matthew kelly babysit your kids, would you?". had fun with that voter website though, it was dead easy to make the outcome 'conservative' - all you had to do was think like an arrogant xenophobic greedy fuckhead for about 1-2 minutes, and you were tory tastic!
  9. is "fairy wings" a euphemism for sanitary towels?
  10. Patient: "Awww, can't we let it grow a bit longer, pleeeeeeeeeeasseee?"

  14. i seem to remember it going out to george crook's house in banchory. was around the same time the bowl got built in banchory too, where i lived at the time. or maybe that was another one. i think the one from stoneywood went out to alford to some guy's house.
  15. i thought it was the keyboard player from simon gall band that isn't simon gall. or dave foyer.
  16. those vocals sound outstanding. what mic did you record them with?
  17. i don't know what is funnier, that all forum members are represented by the caricatures, or that zombie munch accounted for half of all those caricatures. impressive.
