The stunning does not always work, I've seen a number of bits of footage where it's had to be done two or three times by which point the cows are struggling. I've also seen cows struggle away from the bolt gun before it's even been placed on their head. The fact the cow was reared specifically to be eaten makes no difference, the cow is not aware of that fact, only that it is dying. I basically considered it as drawing a line on a scale of what I was willing to eat. For example...most meat-eaters would not choose to eat a Gorilla (either because they are endangered or consider them to close to their own species, yet they would eat a cow). I just drew the line further down the scale. Also continuing to eat fish in a kind of interim step towards full vegetarianism was one of the things that made giving up chicken/beef etc easier and therefore meant I still don't eat meat today.

I stopped eating meat about a year or so ago (I continued to eat fish to ease the transition but have more or lessed stopped that as well). I did it purely on moral grounds, I always loved meat but I realised the only reason for me eating it was that I enjoyed the taste and for me to enjoy that taste, things had to die unnecesarily (obviously continuing to occasionally eat fish was continuing that but I think that was one of the things that stopped me going 'oh fuck this I'm having a steak'. People often talk about 'preachy vegetarians'. I have never heard anyone I know who doesn't eat meat start a conversation about immorality of meat with a meat-eater. However, almost every time I've told someone I don't eat meat I've been met with a barrage of questions and the typical 'they're bred to be eaten' and have a hamburger ROFL! stuff. It always ends up with meat-eaters going into an unprovoked rant about why they still eat meat as if I'm interested! My main argument for not eating meat is that I would only be doing it because I like the taste and I'd rather kill as few things as possible purely for my own pleasure. I haven't found it particularly difficult and I can't see myself going back to meat, I've lost any real desire for it.

Like JohnW this isn't my kind of thing at all, but I agree you could totally hear something like this on the radio. I could genuinely imagine you doing rather well with this kind of stuff in the whole Bloc Party/Klaxons/White Lies market. It's also really well recorded. Working in a cinema this question tends to come up about every twenty minutes. My stock 'top five' is generally..... 1. Amelie - Just absolute perfection, makes the world seem a better place. 2. Rushmore - Any of Wes Anderson's films could be on this list, but this is the one I consider his masterpiece to date. Max Fischer is one of the greatest film characters ever. 3. Taxi Driver - I don't think there's any film that immerses you more in it's 'world' and I don't know why. I always feel like I'm 'in it' as opposed to 'watching it' and I don't know what particular trick of cinematography does that. Genius. 4. Ghost World - Enid Coleslaw is my hero. 5. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - Manages to be ultra-realistic and ultra-surreal at the same time. Jim Carrey succesfully smashes every typecast he's created in his career and comes out as a genuinely incredible naturalistic actor. Honorable mentions - A Bout Du Souffle, A Very Long Engagement, You, Me and Everyone We Know, The Warriors, Spinal Tap, The Shining and everything by Wes Anderson ever.

I love a bit of Mick McCarthy. He comes out with some absolute gold, always straight to the point and doesn't indulge in any stupid 'management speak' bullshit. I've got a bit of a soft spot for Wolves in general actually.

I was more than happy for Ayr to leave with a draw yesterday, especially when you consider Caley were two divisions above us last seasons. I really thought there was the possibility that we were going to get humped yesterday but I think getting draws in the last 2 games against ICT and Partick shows we can at least 'hold our own with the big boys' up in the First Division. An encouraging start for Ayr (although putting the last 50p in my Bet365 account on Ayr to win 2-1 didn't pay off). In other news Hibs fucked my coupon and Rodallega's goal for Wigan was absolutely stunning. I'm away to watch the Man Utd game.

As cheap pub food goes, I've always found the food in Archies pretty good indeed. One of the few places I've found in Aberdeen that do a vegetarian fry-up.

I saw Wavves have an absolutely spectacular meltdown at Primavera. It culminated with the drummer throwing a pint over the singer/guitarist guy then storming off stage, then the singer kept trying to play as the roadies took down all the kit behind him. They had some really good moments despite that! Just got the new Decemberists album, it's pretty incredible on first listen.

I'm very excited about this, they were amazing last time I saw them and the new album is shaping up to be one of my favourites this year.

A lot of the indiepop stuff on there is quite girl-group influenced so may convert you! Particularly Comet Gain, Lucky Soul, Hello Saferide and The Brunettes.

This recipe is the king of Veggie chilli in my eyes. I've made it loads. One tip I'd maybe give though is to use slightly less stock than it suggests otherwise it can be a bit runny. Other than that it's amazing, cheap and makes loads. Three-Bean Chilli Ingredients 2 tablespoons olive or vegetable oil 1 medium yellow skinned onion, chopped 1 large red pepper, seeded and chopped 1 large green pepper, seeded and chopped 1 large jalapeno pepper, seeded and chopped 3 cloves garlic, crushed and chopped 230ml beer or vegetable stock/broth 1 (32- ounce) can crushed tomatoes 1 (14-ounce) can black beans 1 (14-ounce) can dark red kidney beans 1 can of refried beans 1 tablespoon ground cumin 2 tablespoons chili powder 1 tablespoon Tabasco 1 teaspoon coarse salt 1 can of refried beans Directions Over moderate heat, add oil to a deep pot and combine onion, peppers, and garlic. Saute for 3 to 5 minutes to soften vegetables. Deglaze pan with beer or broth, add tomatoes, black beans, red kidney beans, and stirring to combine. Season chili with cumin, chili powder, hot sauce, and salt. Thicken chili by stirring in refried beans. Simmer over low heat about 5 to 10 minutes longer. Serve with rice and top with soured cream.

There's also been a number of albums released this year that could slowly work their way into my all time favourites. I'd go on record as saying 2009 has been one of the best, if not the best year for music in the 00's and it's only July.

I was mainly listening to the rock majesty of Aerosmith ten years ago. I think 1999 was the year I bought Done With Mirrors. I still pop them on every now and then for nostalgia and some quality guitar-riffery.

I don't eat meat and I'm not big on Quorn either, I don't like much of that meat-replacement stuff. I had a really nice Veggie Chilli from Asda's surprisingly brilliant Veggie Ready-Meal selection which had the completely unnecesary addition of Quorn-style mince. Whenever I make veggie chilli from scratch I just use vegetables and various beans and it's much better. As Dave said Aberdeen could totally benefit from a dedicated veggie place like they have in Glasgow. Haven't been in Stereo yet but I have a friend who works there and she loves the food. Mono is brilliant, I have wasted days in there.

Ahh, I can't believe Slow Club played last night and I wasn't there. Can't blame anyone for that though seeing as it was a last minute thing. As for the promotion of Moshulu gigs, as someone mentioned before, they are listed in pretty much every major music magazine gig listing section which always seems like the logical place to check gig listing in my eyes. Don't really see what more people want!
