  5. Where do I start? So many quality reads, here's my faves: 1. 'Who Ate All The Pies? The Life and Times of Mickey Quinn' - The best footballer's autobiography I've ever read. Hilarious. Quinn, who is currently starring in 'Celebrity Fit Club' rose to prominence with spells at Wigan and Portsmouth, but was best remembered from a glorious spell at Newcastle. Quinn, a boozer and womaniser with a penchant for the odd bacon butty, scored a hat-trick on his debut for the Geordies. That evening, after having been bought a drink or forty by the adoring Newcastle public, ended up pissing in a plantpot in the middle of a busy centre bar. Far from being in trouble, it was quite the opposite. The owner of the bar whispered in his ear: "Quinny, keep scoring goals like that and you can piss in my plant pot every week". Nuff said! Legend! 2. Niall Quinn No relation to the above. Cracking read, great insight into his career and also the World Cup in Japan and South Korea. Him and Roy Keane are sworn enemies and so it's good to read his perspective on events. Interesting to note that all his drinking buddies at Arsenal ended up broken alcoholics and gamblers. Quinn, it was said, drank them all under the table and gambled like there was no tomorrow. Tony Adams and Paul Merson just couldn't keep up! Some brilliant stories. Gary Kelly sounds like a complete nutcase! 3. Stan Bowles Yet another one of the stereotypical booze/gamble/women footballers, this is a magic tale of a true maverick. One of the greatest footballers of all time, Bowles gambled away over a million pounds in his life, and this was in the 1970s when footballers were on nothing like they are these days. Some great tales of turning up in the dressing room 10 mins before the start of semi-finals and big matches after gambling the night away, there's also some great tales of him hanging out with his mate Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy fame. Bizarre. 4. The Greatest Footballer You Never Saw : The Story Of Robin Friday There's a common theme developing!!!!!!!! 1970s footballer Robin Friday was a lower league footballer who made George Best look like a monk. By all accounts a complete nutjob, but by those who saw him play, the greatest footballer to grace these shores. Died aged 39. A true rock n roll footballer. Shame there's little if no footage. 5. The Miracle Of Castel Di Sangro - Phenomenal book. Ask Narc.

  12. Yeah, I don't have any of the stuff on vinyl, because I don't have a record player! I've got all the albums, including Smile. I've also got 'Waves' the BBC Sessions and the Box Set, which is cool. There's a great cover of The Pale Saints 'Sight Of You' on the BBC Sessions. Some of the unreleased tracks from the Carnival Of Light sessions are immense and should have been on the record. The Ltd edition Mark Gardener debut can be purchased from this link. 17 copies remaining. http://www.oxfordmusic.net/product.php?id=584&cat=r

  14. Yeah, it's a great record, hence my avatar! Haha! Funnily enough, I actually went round to a mate's the other night and looked through his vinyls. He's got all the early Ride stuff on LP, including the EPs. Best of all is a signed vinyl of GBA, signed by each member of the band at HMV or something, prior to the gig at the Captiol!
  15. It's a fact, he is ace! Check this out! It's an acoustic gig that Andy Bell and Mark Gardener did in 2003 in Stockholm. They both did solo sets and then did a joint set. Two nights. Absolutely amazing. Scroll down to Stockholm. http://www.ticket2ride.it/mgmicro/goodies.htm As for Gardener's debut, it's really cool. A couple of real stand-out tracks.
  16. Nice one! A certain Andalusian Dog will be drooling at the very thought no doubt!
  17. 1. My Little Red Book - Love 2. Slowdive - Slowdive 3. Is Forever Long Enough - Driveblind 4. Snow In Mexico - Mark Gardener (with Goldrush) 5. Ghostfaced Killer - The Dead 60s "I took out every pretty girl in town, they danced with me, and as I held them, all I did was talk about 'cha, here yer name and I start to cry, there's just no gettin' over you, oh no...."
  18. I'm loving all this Ride discussion, delighted! A few of my mates in their early 30s were well into Ride/Verve 'back in the day'. I think 16 times they saw Ride or something like that! Anyway, they find it quite cool/comical that I'm obsessed by them!! One of the geezers actually suggested I try Slowdive, so bought the 'Catch The Breeze - Anthology' before Christmas. It's pretty cool, although very 'shoegazerish'! I think Ride's problem was being tarred with the 'shoegazing' brush, when, at least in my opinion, they were miles more than that! I mean, 'Smile' and 'Nowhere' could possibly described as a wee bit shoegazerish, but I reckon My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive are better examples. 'Carnival Of Light' would certainly have suffered from this pigeonholing! It's a great indie/rock record in my opinion. 'Crown Of Creation', 'Birdman' and 'Only Now' are gems! In relation to Mark Gardener's debut 'These Beautiful Ghosts', I bought it on Limited Edition. It's getting released in the US this year, and should follow in the UK later (would have to check). Try www.oxfordmusic.net. It was supposed to come with a DVD, but this'll come out soon! Gardener actually sent a letter of apology to the fans who bought it on limited edition! There's a couple of great tracks, particularly 'Snow In Mexico' and the trippy 'Gravity Flow'. I hope it gets released over here and does well!
  19. Oh my word, I am not alone! I think Ride are one of the most underrated bands ever in my opinion. I got into them about 3 years ago, and they are now one of my favourite bands of all time, right up there. I've got pretty much the entire back catalogue and a lot of live stuff. Phenomenal band. People knocked their change in musical direction over the years, but that's what I think makes them better. Songs like 'Taste' 'Like A Daydream' 'Leave Them All Behind' etc are stunning. I also think 'Carnival Of Light' is one of the most underrated albums ever. It was released circa 'Definitely Maybe' when the band were falling apart, but I think it's great. The unreleased tracks from those '94 sessions are ace as well. The songs sound magic acoustic too. Andy Bell and Mark Gardener are a great talent. Mark Gardener's debut album is promising, and Andy Bell's contribution to Oasis belies the fact he's 'just the bassist'. What a waste! Another band I think are underrated are Love. Although, admittedly they were big at one point, but I wish more people would go out and buy their records. Arthur Lee's the boy! I can't believe someone thinks all The Smiths songs sound the same!!! Away and stick on 'Strangeways' and behave!
