  1. St. Anger should have been titled "Bob Rock and Metallica present ST. ANGER!" If you've seen "Some Kind of Monster" you'll know what I mean! He had as much input as the then three memebers of Metallica did into the album! In fact, for a fair bit of the recording (you're given dates of events in the movie) it's Bob Rock, Lars and Kirk sitting in the studio writing songs - Hetfield's in rehab, apparantley left the band and Bob Rock is encouraging them to work! He played bass on the album, titled it, came up with lyrics and totally shaped the sound of the record. I think it was his idea to ban the solos as well (If you can show me a more gutted man than Kirk Hamment is when he is told this I'll be surprised!) I suppose what I'm trying to say is, if you want to blame someone for what St. Anger sounds like, blame B. Rock. I'm assuming the previous albums (Black, Load etc.) followed a similar pattern, if you know what I mean. On the other hand, I think "Frantic" is a fucking beast of a song and it always gets the air drums going when I'm in my motor. Fran - tic - tic - tic TIC TIC TIC TOCK! But I dinnae really like Metallica - I can pick and choose. "Kill 'Em All" is pretty good, innit? That gets a blast every now and again. And I would reccomend the movie to anyone - fan of the band or not. It's great viewing.
  2. I'd film it. The visual feast of everyone creating their own unique style would be truly magnificent. We'd need some bloooooooooones, though! And a brass section for the finale. John Robb (Gold Blade frontman and "100 best of" T.V. personality) has previous for waking up at 7am and leading the entire band on a 5 - mile run. Down the beach. In the pissing cold and rain. This is entirely true. Ask Dave fae the Needles. He doesnae drink, either! A signed copy of his Stone Roses book would make a lovely return for letting a celebrity kip on yir sofa!
  3. AC / DC - AECC 1996 The "Hells Bells" and 21 - gun salute still ring in my ears And although it wasn't strictly a gig - Rage Against The Machine at Leeds festival 2000 was something else.

    Qotsa

The new album is brilliant, but the single is, for me, the worst song on it by a long chalk. Paralyze lacks the variety of R and Songs for the Deaf, but has more cohesion. The lullaby by Lanegan that kicks things off is spooky and haunting, but after that, it's all Josh (with a bit of help from Brody and Shirley.) To me it encapsulates the whole "Robot Rock" thing that Josh used to go on about - Bone - dry, repetive riffs and a cool ryhtmic feel. Some of the riffs are crunchy as fuck and his voice sounds as out - there as it's ever been. I would recommend it to anyone, but if your fave Queens songs are Tension Head, Quick & To the Pointless, Millionaire etc. you obviously might not like it as much. Oliveri had to go - He was spoiling it for everyone. I do miss him not being on the album, as I always loved the sheer variety of Queens albums - They would go from an amazingly delicate piece of guitar work and hushed vocals to a full - on punk racket with screaming. But he was fighting with the audience, his bandmates, sound engineers - everyone. It sounds like he was a bit of a twat. Kyuss do indeed rock. Harder than just about any other band i've heard. Josh used to play his guitar thru a bass amp for maximum fuzzieness. I love that fact.

    u.k subs

Great track, in their top three for sure, but I'd go for "Stranglehold" as to me it encapsulates everything that is great about the Subs. They once played here at Kef (then Lava) and the guitarist (Nicky Garret) threw his guitar up in the air and it came right back down on his head! A Kodak moment! Evyone invaded the stage and sang along to Warhead at the end - brilliant. They also played upstairs at Triple Kirks with the Swellbellys - They put a barrier up as well! That was a special gig. Glad to hear there's interest in the latest gig - It's gonna rock!
  6. I'm there if Danny has cleaned himself up......
  7. Just as it's a bit silly to mis - spell band "bad", really. The title is just a flippant one - It was a reaction to people calling the Needles the best "Aberdeen band ever". Karloff are the best Aberdeen band ever in my opinion, for the record. A. Johnny L obviously cares, he's replied to my post. B. People do indeed have short memories. They need reminding. And I'm sure there are loads of younger people on this site who have never even heard of them. Or even knew there were Aberdeen bands on the brink of success 8 years ago.
  8. Anyone remember the Aberdeen band Phonefreak? All this talk of the Needles being the best Aberdeen band ever promted me to write this. They were absolutely brilliant songwriters, extremely talented musicians and mesmorising live performers. And Euan, the singer had a soaring voice that was so distinctive. They played pretty straight down the line rock music, and the guitarist, Carl was a real "lead" guitarist - brilliant player. I saw them several times, mostly at the Lemon Tree. They also played the Music Hall I think, supporting an Oasis tribute band. They won the Bacardi unsigned bands comp North East heat in 1997. Their original 3 - track demo tape was blinding - two studio tracks and a live track. At the time It was all I listened to on my personal stereo at school. Eventually they released an album "Freak Energy" which unfortunately was a badly - recorded, over - produced effort, which didin't capture their live energy at all. I was gutted when I listened to it after seeing them at an album launch at Drummonds. Shortly after this, they disapeared. I've never heard anything else about them. Real shame, as I thought they really were going places. I did hear a rumour, from Jim Gellatly I think, they were offered a deal, but bottled it at the last moment. Anyone have any news on what happened next? Are any memebers of the band on this forum? Anyone worked with them in the past? A sad story, really, as they were a genuinely exciting Aberdeen band who were doing something a bit different and looked like they could go places. Phonefreak, I salute you.
  9. There's giving an honest opinion and honestly being a dick. You were trying to be smart and were shot down. An honest opinion would have been "Not my thing" or "not a fan" but you were intentionally rude and called it "balls". Shit like that pisses me off, beacuse it's fucking pointless giving comments like that. Look at Hogg's earlier comment - He didn't like it, but he didn't have to resort to calling it "balls" just to look smug. Think you can grasp that? Papa Laz is proud to be my avatar.
  10. Infinitely better than being a sarcastic bastard, anyway. Some folk will never get a grasp of the "don't invade threads just to be an arsehole" thing, will they? Dan, I like your bro's band. They are really tight and I can definitely hear an early Incubus influence. Would be cool if they could get some studio time to lay down some tracks. Keep us updated as regards any gigs etc if there's anything happening nearby. Cheers, Marsh.
  11. Ginger would be proud of you................
  12. Spot on! I'll sort out the Nu Soul Warriors tickets and give the extra buckage next time I see you - okay? If it's only a couple o quid extra (you'd imagine the diff'nt styles would be about a favour, eh?) I can get you a pint of Miller's then that'll be us "Mister Gilchristed"
  13. Did the booking feeage / postage etc. round up the total ticket price to a tenner? Good work, lad! Forgot to mention - "Different styles" on April 1st at Moorings, aye! We are THERE, min!
  14. He could do guest vocals - gie it some "edgy unhinged attitude" - perhaps a la Barney fae Napalm Death popping up as a guest screamer everywhere!
  15. Fuck sake! Displeasing to the max.
  16. Rubbiss! Where did you get it and how much bucks, lad? I totally forgot it was out - Might hae a look online now.
  17. If your band is metal - inclined i've always thought "Permanet Bonar" would make a fitting name. No? Didn't think so!
  18. I'm not a drummer (or musician) myself but I always marvel at Alex Van Halen - the intro to Hot For Teacher is amazing. He (and the band) turned very predictable later on, but the earlier albums have some fantastic drumming on them. Just thought i'd chip in with that, but i fear I may be wrong here? If anything it gets me playing air drums........
  19. I remember the Downroads from OId Drakes - great band - Not the sort of thing i'd usally listen to, but certainly in the live environment they were brilliant. I distinctly remember getting quite drunk after seeing them once and raving about them all night afterwards. That programme on Psychedelic Jim had to be seen to be believed.........
