Go and see RAAR, my old flatmate plays in them and they are from the Blackest Isle, and they had the only other tune I liked on that Go North CD.

Indeed I enjoyed 'I Can't Explain' the first time round and am glad its been reissued.

Hmm, quite a lot of choice eh DJ Shadow- must be my all time favourite, the way he has developed over the 10 years, that 'You Can't Go Home Again' epic return, 'High Noon', both versions of 'In-Flux','Number Song', Depeche Mode remix (Painkiller),'Guns Blazing' on the UNKLE album, all the productions for Solesides and Quannum. Shadow is continually on top of his game,#1 by a margin. Dillinja- always had the most subtle touch of the Junglist Dark Side, see 'The Angels Fell' DJ Zinc-Many classics; Ganja Records, 'Super Sharp Shooters' his mix of 'Ready or Not that Hype got credited/blamed for, '138 Trek' Orbital's 'Brown Album' especially the Lush/ReMind?Impact... section St Etienne-1st 3 albums especially, and particularly 'So Tough'- I don't have to explain anything!! One Dove- Scotlands Dub Maestro's Optoplan- We were quite good for a few years., as for clubbier stuff, most of it I can't be arsed trying to find out what it is, leave that to my flatmate Mikey (DJ/Producer extraordinaire), but he has many mental records. Most of the best techno and house I've heard has either been at Kia Aura(sadly missed), or at parties. think of more later.

When I was in Optoplan we started doing things strictly hardware (SP808 sampler, huge Yamaha workstation, MC303), developed into a hybrid of hardware and PC and finished up mainly computer orientated, there are as many ways to go about it as there is combinations of equipment to make it with. A nice modern workstation, sequencing other anciliary units, is still as valid a way of creating electronic music as any, though a Triton is very pricey. PC is cheaper, much cheaper depending on your view of dubious softwareZ. (one could make a theoretical stand on the validity of dodgy copies of Logic due to its wholesale move to the mac, illegal copies are probably the only way to obtain a PC version of Logic, only in v.5, but still very functional and very good.) Every copy of Computer Music has a few pages on basic startup kit, as does Future Music, and are very much pitched at beginners, even containing a glossary to sort out your NRPN's etc

Just on the side, I personally regard Drum n Bass to be merely an invented name for Jungle, which has more threatening connotations. Its all Jungle to me, and what about Jungle Nation- perfect name for a club playing jungle. I used to buy loads of Jungle, but rarely hear much newer stuff that sounds really fresh. Definitely don't think its finished moving as an artform yet though.

Hasn't this thread degenerated somewhat. I still wouldn't let my music computer near an internet connection, until I can afford that fantasy G5 with Logic (v.9 by that time probably), and can sacrifice it to corruption with an easy mind. And as for these wars of words, I think the dissing should be more, um..INNOVATIVE, just like the supposed subject of this thread. I always like to have a chong, to just short of the point where I forget my own name, then the adrenaline sorts me out and i'm cruising. The rest of the band swear by (or perhaps due to) Buckfast, no accounting for taste. This may not be the best for everyone but works for us. If playing at 7 am at a beach party, supplement with speed. None of this would work if I didn't know roughly what I should be playing at any given time.

As you should know, if your frequent quoting of SOS reflects an awareness of its content, the last place a music PC should be is anywhere near the fucking internet, and as our own PC's are all mainly used for audio then thats the last thing they will ever be connected to. Only public or non-essential computers should be used really. And lets face it much of the internet is a pile of shite, mainly the result of too many people with delusions of relevancy. When we can do something sharp and aesthetically pleasing we will, until then people must continue downloading themselves into live venues where, sometimes, we will be flogging CD's (I tried sourcing those wax cylinders so hard). You must try to calm down or all that bile will choke you, and castigating people for being Aberdonian in Aberdeen seems remarkably lacking in awareness. Generally as a longtime slave to the digital interface I would sympathise with many of your points, were it not for the teenage frame of reference within which they are placed, and the fact that you are not particularly funny when ranting. Now if it made me laugh....

Roland definitely, for the JP 8000 synth and the SP808 sampler, as well as my old MC303. Thats before we even begin to mention TR 808's and the definitive 909 kick drum.
