  1. anyone done it before? anyone got any tips? is it worth doing? does it make sound financial sense? are there any websites that people would recommend for buying parts? where's best to start? obivously i'm not going to be actually building it from scratch from a block of wood, but i'm considering doing a full custom job bit by bit. really keen to hear what peoples thoughts are about this in general though, not just relating to what i want to do. i think it could be an interesting topic.
  2. breed 77 will be performing acoustic in one up on sunday at 4pm. they will also be signing stuff as well.
  3. heh, you never heard it. i can't even remember it now otherwise i'd give an example of it. i think i wrote it down somewhere. if it turns up i'll put the lyrics up in this thread.
  4. i woulda mentioned halcion daze if youse were still going greig, though i do like monday mourning. need to come and see your lot playing again soon. scott, the send more paramedics album should be in stock just now, if it's not we can certainly order it. first one is worth checking out too.
  5. yep, that's them. fucking brilliant ridiculous metal. totally screeching songs about orcs and goblins. without the codpeices.
  6. hehe, certainly wasn't manowar. they're name has 3 in it. 3 inches of blood!! i think that's them. just gonna go check.
  7. jesus christ it's good. finest metalcore i've heard in ages. totally raging. for anyone who wasn't at the gu medicine gig(that woudl be most people then) psp are a band that feature one of the guys from gu medicine and they were selling their cd at the gig. anyone who likes stuff like poison the well or from autumn to ashes should check it out. www.psp-web.co.uk
  8. the last song i wrote was about how much i love music. most of my lyrics end up shite though, i once did a song in tribute to quincy. it was a grand statement indeed. *sigh* i like send more paramedics, all their songs are about zomibes. every single damned one of them. it's amazing. and that band that did 'destroy the orcs' whose name i forget. sound like maiden. bloody brilliant. nope it's gone. the other song they did was 'ride darkhorse ride'. they all used to be in hardcore bands, anyone? anyone? bueller? lyric writers i admire are: nick cave, jason molina, will oldham, guy piccioto, stephen malkmus(warped genius), and jeff buckley. also anyone who can write a brilliant pop hook without it sounding cheesy like andre "ice cold" 3000. none of my lyrics are as good as any of these ones. ho hum. bands in aberdeen who i think have good lyrics: eric euan, maple, politik, x-certs, sidca and dedalus(i don't write em so it's not just me bigging up my own band).
  9. what happened to the take? it's gonna be a blast!! listening to 'on the enjoyment of unpleasant places'(2nd album they did) just now, man i always forget just how great they are untill i listen to them. very much dischord influenced angular stuff. think a less rock bluetip or faraquet. also can you get in touch about equipment and soundcheck times please ross, you can get me on my mobile today or at my folks house ta.
  10. we're(dedalus) heavily influenced by godspeed and explosions in the sky, and general constellation style post rockness. though most people tend to just spot the post punk influences. check out clive ravensby for constellation style improvisations. we've done a few instrumentals in the past that have been very godspeedy but we don't tend to play them anymore. may release some though. i'm also currently putting together an improv band which will probably sound similar to stuff like that but hopefully not too similar. as i'm a lazy cunt this may take a while to get going though. hookers green #1 used to be the premier band for that stuff round these parts but they've moved on alot now. completely revamped their sound.
  11. like i said it was a generalisation. there's people that go to everything as well. i've seen most of the punk, metal and art rock bands in aberdeen just cause i like everything but i'd say the majority of people would fit neatly into one of those groups.
  12. yea that's fair enough but it'd be nice for people to give it a try. at least you gave it a try bob. people can complain all they want about the indie/art rock fans not going to punk gigs but it's the same the other way. i think we were playing, as it was the last sonic deth monkey.
  13. i'd like something with a bit more power i'm afraid, thanks anyway though.
  14. to be honest it really wasn't advertised much up here, i only found out the cut off date two days after it had lapsed i'm still disappointed that they don't do the regional heats anymore.
  15. masamune sound a bit like fugazi. seems to me also that a lot of people seem to be saying that all that's being championed these days is the art rock or art punk side of things, shame all this praise doesn't make people come to the gigs. also maybe it's just about time they got a slice of the hype seeing as for the last two years it's been the punkier bands that have gotten the most attention and the more leftfield bands have been ignored. though i'm not sure if we're art rock or whatever, just cause you use a bit of reverb doesn't necessarily make you an art rock band. we're a pop band with loud guitars. and i'm not sure if the scene is that divided. most of the people i know go to gigs with the 'artier' bands and the more straightforward bands. we played the halloween gig purely to try and play to the kids who don't come to the gigs we normally play. i'd love it if all the punk kids started coming to gigs in drakes featuring bands like politik and clive ravensby but it doesn't happen and similarly i'd like to see the reverse, probably won't ever happen though. there are 4 types of crowd in aberdeen: the punk kids art rock crowd indie crowd metal crowd they don't seem to mix all that often unless a band they like happens to be on a bill with bands that the other crowds like. and then there's the crowd that just go and see they're friends band every gig and shout at the other bands. to be honest they tend to also go to the indie gigs if they do venture out to gigs featuring bands other than their friends. obviously that's all a horrible generalisation but i think it holds up.
  16. it wasn't necessarily directed at you, more addressing some of the points you raised. i think i misconstrued what you'd said a wee bit bob, hence the bit about disagreeing a little bit. i just reread your post, i think it probably boiled down to the "rarities in the local scene" bit, the way you'd phrased that made it seem that it wasn't worth noting if it was just in the scene that they were original. hence the point about validity. i was probably just being daft but i think my points still stand. if a band is a product of their surroundings to a certain degree then if they're bringing something new to those surroundings it has to be original. i'd say it's also not as simple as that all the time, like you say simply adding a keyboard to a pop punk band wouldn't do it but it depends what the keyboard player is doing i guess.
  17. that's one of the stupidest things you've ever said. it's relevant to people who enjoy it, just cause you don't like it doesn't mean it's not relevant. and just cause it's lo-fi doesn't make it arty. climb down of your fucking high horse ben. i wasn't saying i listen to the most original bands or anything i was just addressing the points made about originality. and i never said being original meant being good either. sheesh.
  18. why aren't radio lucifer doing it now?
  19. i heard tut's and the like actually get the bands to buy the tickets from them rather than allocate them which is obviously different. but thankfully paul doesn't do that. pay to play is evil and destroy's all that it touches, aberdeen is extremely lucky that it's not happened here.
  20. i disagree about the originality things a little bit, just cos no one else in aberdeen is doing it does make it valid i think. what' sthe point in sounding like another band in aberdeen? okay on a larger scale it might not be that original but where does that madness end? oh there's a band in japan that sound like you so you're not original. i know i've exaggerated that a bit but you get the point. okay so in scotland you've got about 10 bands that sound like sonic youth, but in aberdeen alone you have ten bands playing pop punk. and i can only think of one aberdeen band off the top of my head that sounds like sonic youth, masamune. and for the record i think sidca are original and would be original wherever they go, i've never heard any other band that sounds like big black fronted by mark e smith with sludge breakdowns. and who still have songs that somehow get stuck in your head. *wanders off whistling angel wings*
  21. hey, we play local stuff all the time, it's just not much of it is very good. i don't play it in the shop, some of the other staff keep playing it though.
  22. was that meant to be "now i won't"? so only seem stupid in general now then
  23. the oh brother where art though soundtrack seems to be a good place to start for a lot of people. similarly the cold mountain soundtrack was very bluegrass. there was a follow up album to the oh brother where art though soundtrack called down from the mountain that would also be worth a listen. i'm also just trying to get into some bluegrass stuff and someone recommended i listen to alison krauss but only the stuff with union station(might not be the right name there, can't quite remember) as some of her solo stuff can be quite cheesy i'm told. certainly the tracks that she did on the cold mountain soundtrack were very good. as were jack white's bluegrass song's. we have a few bluegrass compilations instock in one up, but i haven't had a chance to listen to them yet. i'm sure they'd be ok though for a starting point. even if you just came in when it was quiet and had a listen on our headphones to check out a few people.
  24. you'll get your chance to see us on the 24th supporting the really rather good stapleton in moshulu.
