  1. drakes is the finest venue in all the land. it's everything a venue should be while being everything a venue shouldn't be at the same time. and it's fun. always. trans am in drummonds last night was awesome. good room to have a wee dance about and decent booze. i'm starting to really enjoy drummonds. the crowds get me down in there though. drakes always has nicer people in it.

    Screaming

idlewild are still ace, they're just ace in a different way now. i.e they have great songs rather than just being a fearsome band to watch. they were awesome in the captain era though. still never seen em play a bad gig.
  3. dillinger escape plan did an awesome version of come to daddy by aphex twin with live drums. but their drummer doesn't really exist. he's a figment of everyones imagination. no one can actually drum that song. when i mentioned drum triggers it was really to guage whether flash had a problem with live drummers using drum triggers. these are used to ensure a drum retains the same sound every time it's hit. it can also be used to give the same volume every time it's hit no matter how hard. i'm no expert so if i'm wrong i'm sure someone will correct me on this. basically they're a handy tool for drummers to use if you're on tour and want to make sure you still get the same awesome drum sound it took you two weeks of tinkering to get in your practice room.
  4. it is generating an interesting debate this one though, i get what you're saying about the human aspect and the emotional response. i don't think having a drum machine is a step towards automated music making though, its' just another way to get a cool sound into your song. another way to make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. like someone said, radiohead were awesome at the exhibition centre and have successfully managed to incorporate a huge amount of electronic gadgets into their sound while still illiciting an emotional response. they had affy pretty lights too. boards of canada's music i think is just as emotional as some of my favourite bands who don't use electronics as all. but that's just my own personal response to the music. everyone is affected by different sounds in different ways, and as you said there is no right or wrong answer to this.
  5. drum machines can create all manner of fucked up noises and sounds which a standard kit just can't i can't help feeling that you're argument centres around the fact you don't like dance music and thus anything associated with dance music has no place in a rock band. didn't do echo and the bunnymen any harm. i believe that you shouldn't write off any instrument(and yes a drum machine is an instrument) as it just restricts your options. if a song can be better by using a drum machine then use a drum machine. i don't think dance music is dead, it's just more underground again. it's going through a commercial recession but it'll probably re-emerge once someone comes up with a sound that appeals to everyone again. perhaps the rapture, dfa et all will lead to that. all music is cyclic, it never dies it just goes back to the bedrooms and the garage's. anyway, surely you can manipulate drum machines in real time as well as just have them preprogrammed? you can add effects and use keyboards to release sounds at different times and to react to the live situation. what do you think about drum triggers? we're trying to work out a way to incorporate some of martin's synth and drum machine wizardy into dedalus' live set at the moment. i think it can add a different dimension to a band's sound, but it can also overpower the basis of the song if used badly. so i'm for it, but not if it's shit.

    Bollywood

not alone, isn't it something like the second biggest film industry behind hollywood? could be wrong about that. just a lack of appreciation in aberdeen i feel. personally not my cup of tea, though i did used to watch kabadi all the time when i was younger on channel four. that game is nuts.

    Bollywood

is that a picture of you in full bollywood gear in your profile there phil? must say you scrub up quite nicely. who'd of thought it would make you look so feminine. incidentally, i notice you're listening to donovan. did you know he's playing glasgow soon? big poster of it on the side of r & b music.
  8. i just bought a boss mt2 metalzone off ebay for 46 inc postage, \m/ ebay rocks.
  9. sidca are supporting as well, woa yea!! gonna be sweet.
  10. mike patton's album was recorded on a 4 track while touring and released on a tiny label with no money thrown at marketing it. big dumb face was released on a major label and had a marketing campaign. both fairly unlistenable though. the patton one is interesting but i wouldn't recommend repeated listening. it can only do your head harm.
  11. lots of companies made aluminium guitar necked guitars. travis bean being the most popular. incredible sustain. they warp less than wood as well apparently, according to a few websites i've looked at anyhow. just interested in keeping my options open. shellac, jesus lizard, oxes, godspeed you black emperor have all used travis bean guitars. i like the idea of a tele body with an aluminium neck, just can't find a company that make them seperately.
  12. ummm, no. but it is if he's in a band called dedalus. see if the bands called dedalus then he can be steven dedalus. which he liked. i've started reading portrait of an artist but find it a bit dull at the moment.
  13. i fucking hate pink floyd. shine on you crazy diamond is the dullest song ever. if i was stoned and someone put on pink floyd i'd consider punching them right between their little crossed eyes. kyuss on the other hand always hits the spot. give me low end riffage that i can nod my head to any day. although stuff like spacemen 3 is a doozy as well. personally any music is better than no music after a smoke but if i had to choose, i'd choose gonga and kyuss. come down to valhella some time, you might surprise yourself. and of course go see gonga.
  14. so anyone know where i might lay my hands on an aluminium neck?
  15. surely not, i can't even begin to believe that.
  16. well 3/4's of them live in glasgow now
  17. twas a web of lies. but very entertaining ones. dave said that johnny had taken a skateboard onstage and a horrific accident had ensued which left his foot hanging off by a bit of skin.
  18. might i also add that we have beards. and you can see our beards on saturday supporting stapleton in moshulu. huzzah.
  19. that's interesting. wasn't some of the folk from hey mercedes in braid? if so have they split? or is this just a bit of fun? we demand answers.
  20. the main character in james joyce's portrait of an artist as a young man is called steven dedalus. as is our singer. who read the book at school in northern ireland. nothing to do with greek mythology, so would people please stop spelling it that way!*frowns in the direction of the lemon tree*
  21. did anyone else read the bit about the needles in the scum(sun)? very entertaining.
  22. jesus!! that's a whole load of info you got there thanks very much for the help i'll check those sites out this week and probably order one of the books. so are you actually doing the body yourself as well? braver man than i. i was planning on buying a neck and a body then working from there. have to disagree with your reasoning for the tele body though, surely it's because they're the most beautiful guitars built by man or beast?
  23. make sure you all get along early to see the x-certs and check us out too, we'll be playing a new song and everything.
  24. i'm planning it as a long term project cause im pretty skint so it's just a way to get a great guitar bit by bit without a huge initial payout. just thinking about it just now hence i need all the advice i can get plus it's a great way to learn more about guitars. i'm also keen to work on building pedals but that's another project all together. my imagination's kinda running wild at the moment, i could end up with the wierdest looking guitar around.
