I use Jim Dunlop black 1mm picks, with the embossed writing on them. Due to an accident many years ago involving part of my right hand, I cannot keep a grip on smooth picks. Occasionally I also use a hint of superglue onto my forefinger to keep them in place if I'm having a bad time of it. I don't break strings any more or less than the next man, and I use plain old Rotosound 10-52 guage. It's all in the technique, I think, and I also find you can do more with a heavier pick. Accuracy is better, pick harmonics and scrapes are easier, etc.
