hi everyone,

i've just moved to aberdeen from austin texas to work on a phd in composition at the university of aberdeen. i write/perform experimental music, mostly electronic (beatless), really hard to describe. most of my music is influenced by modern 'avant garde' music such as cage, brown, feldman, wolff, behrman, lucier, nakamura, amm etc...

anyway, i'd really appreciate any pointers on venues or certain nights where more experimental music may be performed in aberdeen...i know it might not be exactly what i do, but anything that sounds like it might be close will do to start...

also, if anyone would be interested in collaborating on something that would be great too...i'm looking to start an improvisation workshop focussing on methods/ideas of pauline oliveros, eddie prevost, toshi nakamura, keith rowe, christian wolff etc...if you'd be interested in being involved, please feel free to email me at billthompson@billthompson.org

glad there's a forum like this here! thanx,

b.

try send the users chilli or graeme a pm with a home address or an email address and i'm sure they'd be more than happy to send you a newsletter with forthcoming events that they, interesting music, put on around aberdeen.

You definately need to speak to Chili & Graeme at Interesting Music! They put on a monthly electronica night at Drakes & also promote gigs by experimental / anti-folk / etc artists.

I'll email pass on your details to them & get them to give you a shout.

Good timing, too - It's not long before their Christ and Frogpocket gig at Drakes (the 4th of November, I think). I think Martin from Barking Spider Electronics is playing the same night, so you'll get three really different Scottish electronic experts to say hello to! But yeah, Chili & Graeme are right at the core of organising this kind of thing. I'm sure they'll find this thread soon and say hello!

Hi prof

Welcome to the Aberdeen (music?) scene..;)

You have arrived in the cultural vacuum of the western world, The North East of Scotland, where the level of ignorance and prejudice is matched only by the weather,

The little corner of the world where CnW music is held in greater esteem than racial equality,

The place whose only redemption is that the women wear mini skirts even when the temperature is 5 below!....

All above is true, honest...;)

Seriously though, I do welcome you warmheartedly, and look forward to either hearing you play, listen to some of your work, or even just have a jam,

Anyway, I hope your course at uni isn't too mind taxing, and you'll spare some creativity for the public, as well as the lecturers!!!

Let us know if you are playing/or posting mp3s etc, etc, ....:)

L8a.

I'll add

You will definately be needing to get to Drake's on many occassions. Drake's is a central hub for the more adventurous performer, listener and promoter. Also of interest will be the lImousine Bull night at Drake's on the 3rd of November for FND 015 (details to follow) Novembers night is based around experimental music production. There is a presentaion by two audio-visual artists which will lead onto a performance and dj set.

Limousine bull is an artist led collective with Scottish arts council funding promoting contemporary arts in Aberdeen and the north east.

Membership forms are available from Dr Drake's

thanx everyone

hi all,

thanx for all of your replies both here and private emails...your suggestions have been great and i'm hoping i can get something going soon.

and as far as charlambrides, i played several shows on the same bill with tom carter (the guitarist) and we knew each other. austin's a pretty small world so it's hard to not know people or play shows with people in slightly different musical circles if you play any thing that could be considered experimental or creative.

tom, christina, and heather leah murray have obviously disbanded, but they were coming out of the psychrock side of experimental music, where i fell into it from the compositional angle. heather's actually moved here (somewhere in scotland) and gotten married...so i'm sure she's doing something somewhere.

anyway, thanx again for your suggestions..i'll let you all know if i'm doing anything anywhere ;)

For God's sake someone comes on here asking a legitimate question and gets stupid comments like this' date=' grow up. It may not be your kind of stuff but there's no reason for that especially to someone new to the forum.

Maybe it was but you're still talking about someone who is new here, doesn't know who Stripey is and may not understand your oh so grown up and complicated sense of humour, fair enough have a laugh with people who are used to this place but let the newer members get acclimatised first!

Cheers

She's in a musical (and other) relationship with David Keenan, who as well as being in a few bands also writes for the Wire magazine. They live in Glasgow, I think.

You'll probably know a few of my acquaintances from the 'wyrdfolk' scene, too.

Yeah, because starting a moronic argument that eats up more space is obviously better for someone to read, you blazing fuckwit.

welcome to the musical anus of the world prof!

Ive been to Austin (played at this years SXSW) so I know this dark shithole of a place may involve a huge degree of culture shock, compared to the layed back sunny fun that is Austin (or so it appeared during the week we were there)

I doubt the trolls of Aberdeen will offer you same hospitality we got in the states, but much good luck anyway....its not all bad honest. *trys to think of something really cool about Aberdeen*....erm, will have to get back to you later.

but there is indeed a contingent of experimental musicians around the town (Im not one of them....maybe slightly) so Im sure you'll find your niche

Drakes is definately where its at for your thang

ps . you will need an anorak/kagool*

i agree

stuart, i think you need to write less arguments that take up space, i don't think prof lo-fi really should have to see something like a "bandwidth festival" that happened earlier this year ;)

best wishes,

El Flosso
