2014/2015 Season Thread

It was an absolute chore to watch. It was worse than a chore, because I was considering jacking it in and going to do the washing up by the 70th minute. Resolved by a truly ugly goal, scored by a wanker who did fuck all, all game.

Now I feel like my eyes have crusted over into scabs.

Total shite game compunded by Man United fans doing plane gestures during the 17th minute applause for our fans who perished on that Malaysian plane laat year. Wankers.

High point was seeing Big Jonas get on. That ovation, man. I was close to welling up.

United away fans can be a pretty horrible bunch. A few years back, they ransacked a food vendor inside Oakwell when they played Barnsley in the League Cup, assaulting staff and stewards. Utterly needless. There was some argybargy instigated by United fans away at both Stoke and Leicester this season too.

The Jonas ovation was great. I loved the reception that the Jonas booking got as well. Definite booking, and a total cruncher of a challenge, but the referee should have let him have one.

That tackle was beautiful. It says a lot about Newcastle that my favourite part of our season thus far has been seeing our goofy Labrador of a winger coming on for the first time in 17 months and immediately launching into the worst tackle ever.

Papiss Cisse has apologised and accepted the charge. could be facing a 7 game ban, but he's not kicking up a stink.

Jonny Evans is still denying that any spitting incident even occurred, and is claiming to be "shocked" about the media coverage. Now he looks even more of a bell-end, because the multi angle TV replays, slow-mo, freeze-frames are pretty conclusive. whether he gobbed on Cisse or just gobbed towards him, he still did it. Total boob.

This thread's awfully quiet...

I'd have been in here if I'd been at work, tbf. The Celtic/Dons game was very weird. Can't deny Celtic deserved the win (4-0 FFS) but Aberdeen almost totally dominated the first half. Weird game, good game I guess, shit result (for me). It's also annoying that anyone that hadn't seen the game or even write-ups just see 'oh top of the table clash that Celtic still walk' when 4-0 really doesn't paint the picture. Although, that said - if Celtic had taken a few more of their chances after Aberdeen's heads dropped, it could have been six or seven.

Sounds silly, but there are lots of positives to take from the game and had we been a bit more clinical first half things could have been a lot different.

Top of the summer shopping list for us has to be a quality goalkeeper. It's been a problem position for Kjaers (lol). Shinnie will solve the left back issue. And a new contract for Ryan Jack, please. :/

If we can line up like this next season, I'll be delighted:

Neuer

Logan - Taylor - Reynolds - Shinnie

Jack - McLean

Hayes - Pawlett - McGinn

Rooney

The difference, I thought, was fitness. While Aberdeen pressed and run a very fast, compact attack for the first 20 minutes, they started to lose steam about 30 minutes in, before the first goal. If the Dons were able to keep that intensity up for longer periods, it would've been far closer. Whether that's a coaching issue, or a facilities issue, I don't know.

If your lot are generally fitter going into next season, and play shrewdly in the transfer market (to improve the depth of the squad), you'll be pumping the likes of Motherwell and St. Mirren on the regular. It sounds obvious, but Scottish teams don't seem to prioritise fitness over the course of a season, so you'll notice more bizarre score-lines when it comes to March and April.

These are just my thoughts.

Aberdeen's fitness has markedly improved since we hired a guy called Graham Kirk (a sports scientist). I don't think fitness levels are a problem in our team, I genuinely do just think we went 2-0 down after being hyped for the game and the adrenaline maybe took its toll. Not an excuse for a professional footballer that wants to win trophies, but I think last 30 minutes we looked a bit like rabbits in headlights.

I'm pretty positive about everything, though. The post-split game should be at Pittodrie (I believe, given historic fixtures and the way it all works out), so I would say that if we win all of our games between now and then end of the season we'll be there or there abouts. This is a big ask, and would rely on players staying injury-free, but you've gotta hope, for the sake of Scottish football's appeal that Celtic don't run out winners 15 points clear again.

Dundee United supporting is pretty depressing right now.

Who cares about all the money were making (10 million-ish in transfers in the last 3 years) if you don't keep it together when you can to try and win things.

I understand why he sold GMS as it was get 250k now or get nothing in summer.  But why sell Armstrong.  Burnley were offering 100k less than Celtic, you'd get at least the same amount in summer when he still had a year left on his deal.  Just fucking keep him.  We were in a cup final, a cup quarter and 3rd in the league behind by like 5 points or something at the time.

But Thompson is more concerned with the financial balance.  In the past, sure.  When we had sizable debt.  We don't now, we're in a financially strong position.

Fuck it, if you don't want to win why would what's left of the team.  No wonder we're on a slide.

Cool stats: Ronaldo hasn't scored a free kick for Real Madrid since March 26th 2014. Since then, he's taken 52 free kicks, and not scored one.

Ronaldo has only ever scored 23 free kicks in club football. He's scored more than twice that amount as headers (56), yet he's a specialist renowned for scoring free kicks and somehow he still has a reputation of not being that good in the air, as many flair players aren't. The commentator on Sky Sports (vs Athletic Bilbao) today said "Ronaldo has never been prolific in the air. We're more used to seeing him score solo goals and set pieces".

The opening goal in the Champions League final vs Chelsea in 2008 was unbelievable also. He got so much air. He's not just got a great leap, but his direction of headers is unbeatable too. He had a header in the dying minutes against Villarreal last week where it looked like he dislocated his neck, wrapped his head around the ball and spun it back towards Asenjo's far post. Forced an excellent save from the keeper, but it was an impossible header. No other player on earth could have done that. Except Tim Cahill, of course.

He's not all that good at free kicks though. He just knuckles it so it floats about, and sometimes they go in and it looks great. Most of the time, they look ridiculous and fly high and wide. Bale is statistically better at free kicks. Since 2009, Bale has scored more and missed fewer than Ronaldo. Bale also seems to have more of a free kick technique than just punting the air valve. He can also bend it, y'know, like that guy; Pirlo.
