ca_gere
I keep half an eye on ligue un and have to admit it didn't seem James Rodriguez was the phenom he's been during this world cup. An extremely talented player with loads of potential yes but on the world class level he's been? not quite - or at least it hadn't come across that way from the highlights/recaps/analysis I've seen. (I subscribe to canal+ and ligue 1 on youtube and read l'equipe from time to time so I get pretty good coverage) Point I'm making is that whilst he didn't come from absoutely nowhere, it's not completely surprising there is a sense of the british journalists 'discovering' this guy. ca_gere
Wait... i think i've replied in the wrong thread. NVM, still relevant.
Paranoid Android
I was gutted for Mexico last night, they played really well and were so close to making it past the round of 16 for the first time. They have great fans too. Pleased for Costa Rica even though they didn't look like the side which beat Uruguay and Italy, perhaps that group was actually just really shit? But guys, that Korean girl... Yes, indeed.
Paranoid Android
I quite like that Algerian anthem. I hadn't really noticed it before. I hope they play well tonight but when it gets to this stage I kind of want the big guns to progress.
ca_gere
The lyrics are pretty impressive too: We swear by the lightning that destroys, By the streams of generous blood being shed, By the bright flags that wave, Flying proudly on the high djebels, That we are in revolt, whether to live or to die, We are determined that Algeria should live, So be our witness -be our witness -be our witness! We are soldiers in revolt for truth And we have fought for our independence. When we spoke, nobody listened to us, So we have taken the noise of gunpowder as our rhythm And the sound of machine guns as our melody, We are determined that Algeria should live, So be our witness -be our witness -be our witness! From our heroes we shall make an army come to being, From our dead we shall build up a glory, Our spirits shall ascend to immortality And on our shoulders we shall raise the Standard. To the nation's Liberation Front we have sworn an oath, We are determined that Algeria should live, So be our witness -be our witness -be our witness! The cry of the Fatherland sounds from the battlefields. Listen to it and answer the call! Let it be written with the blood of martyrs And be read to future generations. Oh, Glory, we have held out our hand to you, We are determined that Algeria should live, So be our witness -be our witness -be our witness! If Algeria beat Germany and get France in the next round I fully expect large-scale nationwide riots in France. It'll be nuts.
Paranoid Android
Actually screw what I said about wanting Germany to win. Algeria have been great so far and you're right them playing France would be amazing.
ca_gere
The day Algeria would play France is July 5th, the same day as Algerian independence day... again, nuts!

Adam Easy Wishes
Mesut Ozil has been AWFUL in this game.
Paranoid Android
Germany have been more on top in this second half but an Algeria counter attack goal still looks possible.
ca_gere
Neuer's been holding (y) a lot this game
ca_gere
This is close to being a masterclass in counter-attacking football. This Algeria team isn't the plucky minnows they've been made out to be. Defensively suspect but on the counter they're as good as there is in this world cup: running with speed in numbers, playing it out wide early and whipping it in at the right time. Great to watch. Paranoid Android
This has been one of the best 0-0s I've seen in a long time.
Paranoid Android
The Muller falling over free kick routine Sometimes it has felt as if Neuer's starting position is outside the box. That last counter attack he cleared up was ridiculous.
scottyboy
Really felt Algeria were going to rue those missed chances at half-time, still in it though... of course the team is world class, couldn't have beaten the mighty Korea otherwise. Old Gold
What an ending. Algeria did extremely well getting one in against that powerhouse of a keeper.
Chris
Vive La France! Our relentless gallic march to the final continues. Now we're nicely set up to avenge the defeat of our upstart colony by beating Germany on Friday. Allez les bleus! Deschamps has now gone 10 games undefeated at the world cup as a player and a manager
