TelecasterSam
Well... apparently prisoners in jail are NOT to get the opportunity to vote !discuss ?(personally, I agree..... loss of freedom should mean an inability to vote..... prisoners can vote when they've done their time !) Yh_Buddy_
I agree that they should not be able to vote, why should they get their say if they've committed a crime , they don't deserve any of the things they get in prisons across Britain-- "Oh, you've killed someone, you'll have to go to jail for 8 years, probably be out in 4 and you can have a comfy bed and a big ol' TV", fuck sake.
Paranoid Android
While I don't agree with most of the thoughts of the Daily Mail above I also don't think prisoners should be allowed to vote. After release and upon completion of any parole period they should be. delboy
Have to say I agree they shouldn't vote, don't even know why they're bothering to discuss it! Must be a quiet politics day!
Oedo 808
I don't think it's a big issue. If prisoners could vote it certainly wouldn't bother me.
Guest
Don't think prisoners should be able to vote whilst they're in prison. When you commit a crime in/against society, you forfeit the right to have a democratic say imo. Once they've done their time, back to being able to vote again. Think that's quite fair. TelecasterSam
If it's going to be discussed, i wouldn't be offended if they could vote ..............They can't vote.......its already been decided..... I saw it on the ITN news.... the commons have voted for NO voting rights....just wondered what folk on here thought about that ?Is it an infringement of their human rights ? (I don't think so!) Adam Easy Wishes
But should they be allowed to vote in the Fudge Awards polls?
Bigsby
They can't vote.......its already been decided..... I saw it on the ITN news.... the commons have voted for NO voting rights....Commons vote last night was just MPs sounding off, NOT binding in any way. There has been a European Court ruling saying that the govt. should give them the vote.If the govt, listens to the will of parliament last night and doesn't give them the vote, then the prisoners will most likely sue the govt. for millions of pounds. Stroopy121
I can't think of a single reason why letting the people we deem 'unsafe' to be a part of our society help decide who is in charge of said society is anything other than a horrendously stupid fucking idea.xx
Shaki
If they do get the right to vote my new party's manifesto ("Convict") is going to centre around blanket pardons. That's 100K votes in the bag
Soda Jerk
If it's going to be discussed, i wouldn't be offended if they could vote, i personally think the stereotypical inmate wouldn't even bother voting anyway. Having said that, if they are pending release then they should be allowed to vote. .2Like in the St Anger video?Or like Prison Mike?"Do you know why they call me Prison Mike?!" KimyReizeger
I suppose, to further the argument a little, banning prisoners from voting acts as a very poor deterrent as few prisoners are of the mindset to exercise voting rights anyway (and therefore wouldn't necessarily view the loss of voting rights as a very tough punishment). Why then do we have such an issue with allowing prisoners to vote? They are part of society and this is a democracy.
Guest Bob Knob
They are part of society but, in a way, to a lesser extent so their rights should be adjusted accordingly (imo etc).Or just give them the right to vote...in exchange for all the TV sets etc

Frosty Jack
I don't understand why it matters whether prisoners vote or not? How does it affect society? In pretty much every case, their political views have got absolutely nothing to do with their crime, so why should removing that particular right have anything to do with their punishment? It's not like they're going to vote for the 'criminal' party...And even if you go for a ban, why should it just be 'prisoners', and not 'criminals'? For example, some 18 year old gets caught with a bit of drugs on him, gets sent down for six months which just happens to coincide with an election. No vote. Yet a career criminal, just finished a 10 year stretch for murder can head off to the polls unhindered...
Oedo 808
Voting / political involvement could play a part in the rehabilitation of an offenderI agree. Prison often has a valuable role to play in the rehabilitation of our politicians, so why shouldn't the opposite be true?
