HMV to close?

Oh aye - the FOPP in Edinburgh is good, but if FOPP came back to Aberdeen I'd continue to buy my CDs in One Up.

It depends of course, if they are the same price then fair enough but the great thing about Fopp for me was picking up back catalogue stuff that you had been meaning to get for ages for a couple of quid, same with books and DVDs.

Anybody of my vintage remember going into Bargain Books to sneak a peek at Madonna Nudes 79? (This really has nothing to do with Fopp or HMV)

Their points card is a joke too, many other stores don't charge for points cards and it's nice when you get something back every so often. They don't even explain that they charge you for the card when they offer it either. Someone was explaining that you can't use your points to buy items in store either, it's for getting limited merchandise like signed posters?

I used to be in HMV every Saturday when I lived out in the sticks, spending all my wages on CD's and DVD's, but now it's just too expensive for widely available items.

Plus having a member of staff go a bit stalkerish on me was scary, especially when he could remember every purchase I'd ever made.

Nah, not sad to see HMV go.

Geez, pot/kettle? Got fed up of you telling me that you save your best "coffee" for back at your place every time I came in for a vanilla latte.

On another note, although it might be seen as a 'good thing' for independent record stores, it could mean losses to even the most independent labels, so there'll be less availability of music anywhere. It's extremely concerning.

So, the argument that One Up (which I absolutely adore and is my first place to go for CDs, but still) is killing off these places is pretty misguided. Having a selection of both a large, 'mainstream' music store and a more specialist place like One Up is what brings many consumers out into the shops. It's good to have both.

I don't think anyone argued that One Up is killing off high street music stores.

I think it's a bad thing, not only because people will lose their jobs but it's yet another indication (if one were needed) that people just can't be arsed paying for music anymore

im sad to see it go.

but i mean i worked there for one day in 2007 and quit, the way they treat staff is horrendous,

look at security guard steve who used to work there for about 9 years and they fire him off becuase he didnt do some paperwork.

itll be a bit shit if hmv does go but i mean the world economy is fucked anyway so its going to go at some point along with everything else.

Vanilla latte? That's a bit of a girly drink... Plus I'm not a coffee bitch anymore :) just a regular bitch. It was just creepy knowing he'd been watching when I went into the store.

I still pay for all of my music, but it's either through itunes or play.com.

Nah, I guess some people were arguing the opposite, that HMV and other high street stores are killing One Up as they thought HMV closing would be good for it. The only time killing off was mentioned was when I said that it's online retailers that are killing One Up, not the high street.

If it goes it'll be shit. If I'm ever in town, it doesn't matter what I'm in for, I normally go in and pick something up, and I'll go into Waterstones too and buy 3 books for the price of 2. If I'm in town for music I'll pop in to 1UP and buy some music. I just like buying things in store and having it there with me right away instead of waiting.

Well normally its a couple of comics or a comic and a book, and the free one goes to my girlfriend.

And by everytime I mean not everytime. Just the times I want to buy 3 books. Other times I won't go in. But I normally want to buy 3 books. I like 3 books. Or 2 comics and a book. Or 2 books and a comic.

But never 3 comics. My girlfriend doesn't like comics. And if I give her a free book, I don't have to actually buy gifts.

[/essay]

I hope HMV doesn't close though.

To put this in perspective, I didn't even know they sold comics. <3
