framheim
there is well maintained parks in the centre of town(well ish), westburn park and victoria park aren't totally out of the way and neither is duthie park really. i guess union terrace gardens could certainly be improved and made more pleasant. at the moment it's a little unnerving havinga sandwhich while tramps fight beside you.victoria park is really really nice on a sunny day and well worth a visit. though i'd avoid the toilets from early evening onwards unless you're looking for more than a little light relief
Flash
Would it not also be an idea to write to the Minister for Communities in the Scottish Parliament (Margaret Curran MSP)It may also be an idea to write to the minister for Education and Young People as well, seen as this scheme would involve the young to a great extent. That minister is Peter Peacock MSP by the way. Oh, and the minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport would also be a good person to contact - Frank McAveety MSP

They'll feed 'punters' bullshit, and talk about this being a 'local planning issue'2. It's better to go through an MSP if you want to contact a minister, I've done it on my own and through that method as well, and I know which yielded the best result in terms of quicker response and also the substance of the reply. Guest Stripey
Less pubs and more small coffeeshops (with decent coffee and food, independant ones not evil starbucks or manky OAP's cafe's serving scones and fryups) would be cool. It's rediculous the amount of pubs there are, town is a horrible place to be on weekend evenings because of the sheer volume of drunken childish arseholes in the streets. It's difficult just to go and have a pleasant wander about town in the evening and find somewhere to have a coffee, god knows what tourists must think of the place when they see union street on a weekend night heaving with uncivilised morons who can't control their behaviour. More art spaces would be great, and I like the idea of a sealife type place as Dave Officer suggested, it's supposed to be a seaside city afterall! What's happening with the dry sky slope, thats been lying in disuse for years.
Guest allsystemsfail
the autonomous social centre is a great idea though' date=' i really hope that gets going!1 [/quote']Hey man, thanks. It was cool you guys played our first benefit show at Drummonds. We're hoping our second benefit will be as successful. We met with a representative of the city council (regarding a building) May/June, though are still awaiting a second meeting with them. Are also investigating the possibility of renting a space cheaply.
Rass
I couldnt agree more with the ideas put up this thread (except for the bit about destroying Belmont St maybe), Maybe not preticularly making places for youth to go, but more the general identity of Aberdeen, ive been thinking alot about it having spent a couple of days in edinburgh, its amazing the different atmosphere in the two cities, admittedly it is almost festival time in edinburgh but nonetheless, it was an amazing feeling walking about a city that didnt seem to have any prejudice for a start (i dont think ive ever gone 2 days in Aberdeen without getting abuse hurled or dirty looks from neds) , it was a very free feeling, and i think this comes from the way the city is planned and run, i really didnt want to come back to the shit hole that is aberdeen after spending just 2 days there. I dunno, it was just on my mind after being away, pedestrianising (sp?) union street would be a start, or making it only buses (i know this is 'in the pipeline'... but for how long now?) union street is so dank and depressing, in fact i think belmost st is the highlight of th city, not really for the content, just the look and feel of it... sorry, im just having some semi concious rambling, but i think Aberdeen city council should stop thinking about putting roofs on everything and maybe think about cleaning up the city and giving it a better vibe.... Sue Denim..
Weren't the council going to demolish that old council building and build some sort of Civic centre in its place for folks to bum about in when the weather's nice?Sue

Lawy Lawson:Attorney
I wholeheartedly support the establishment of arts cafes, gallerys and the re-evaluation of the use of the town centre, but I'm wondering who'd actully use them.I know I would like too, but I'd be buggered if I could drag a lot of my friends somewhere that doesn't serve alcohol and I think there is a general aversion to high culture present in the North East's mindset. People choose to go to clubs because they're seen as cool and slightly rebellious, partly because pubs and clubs are made to seem so mysterious to us when we're kids, while in Europe, a drink is something you go for mid-shopping trip. Perhaps looking at changing licensing laws would be a good start for change.Oh, and we really, really need a skatepark too.

Guest Jake Wifebeater
One way to improve the city centre is to get rid of some of the rampant Americanisation that's happened in the past few years. I don't want shit like Gap, Starbucks and McProfits clogging up the streets.

It's a start, but I think more is def needed. It's such a pity that a soon as a building becomes empty, the only constructive thing anyone can think of doing with it is turn it into a pub/casino etc.
Tav
Oh' date=' and we really, really need a skatepark too.[/quote']We've already had two both of which didn't get much attention after the intial hype. Stoneywood skatepark although it was a little out of the way was pretty good. Much better than anything near by...especially that crappy one in Dundee. Then there was the one at the beach which was great cause everything was properly sized and not restricted by planning like all the shitty little parks like the one here in Portlethen. From eating breakfast in a really scummy greasy spoon on leith walk to a pint in a fantastic little pub in the leith docks (if you can find a pub there that hasn't been "regenerated") and the mass pissups in the city centre. Flash@TMB
I got this book for Christmas... well OK I bought it for myself... but it's pictures of how Aberdeen used to look before the council granted Stewart Milne exclusive rights to knock it down, sell the granite blocks to Europe, and build something prefabricated and harled in white, that looks nothing like the buildings around it (ie old Post Office in Crown Street) for half the proceeds, then sell them for 250K each.So my recommendations would be:1) Put Stewart Milne up against a wall. Have Garth bugger him, then shoot him in each kneecap, each elbow, the crotch and finally the stomach. Then force him to eat his rug. Finally drop a 100 tonne white harled breeze block onto him from a height of 200 feet.2) Lock all the councillors in St Pigsty house and demolish it.3) Then use their life insurance policies to rebuild Aberdeen exactly like it was, because believe it or not even as recently as the 1950s it was still a stunningly beautiful city.4) At the very restore Virginia Street, Marshial Street, Shore Brae, Trinity Quay, and Regent Quay back to how they were pre 1976.BASTARDS!!!
