Usually the parent corp will initially try to farm you out to one of their other labels, but you probably already knew where those labels stood from before you signed you deal, so it's often just an administrative time delay. Perhaps the greater point is... Is the best way for every new band to proceed to form their own label, pay for their own recordings and seek to find national and international licencees when the time comes to expand? Should bands treat that traditional dream of signing a 'major deal' and being propelled to fame and fortune with the label doing everything for them as an outdated concept that no longer applies in the world of today? The one thing that as very definitely changed in the last ten years is the hundredfold advances in cheap high quality DIY recording eqpt. You should be able to make an album yourself. With a lot of the affairs of a band, all a major label adds is several layers of bureaucratic delay in the decision making process, which becomes sluggish. I think they should be looked at, not as fairy godmothers, but in the cold light of day, as rich potential investors. The fact is, if HIFH produce an album themselves and sell it on the internet/gigs they will be in profit very quickly, unless the recording costs are huge... and after they go into profit will be making a lot of money...even selling CD's at Dischord prices. craig deadenstereo Posted May 18, 2004 Report Share Posted May 18, 2004 To be honest, they weren't that great.I can see similar things happening to Franz Ferdinand and a bunch of other bands signed for their images.You have to be a truly unique or exceptional to stay on one of the big labels. framheim Posted May 18, 2004 Report Share Posted May 18, 2004 franz ferdinand aren't on a major though. they're on domino. one of the finest record labels in all the land.nothing to do with a major label. and they weren't signed for their image either. so don't think they'll have any problems at all.also you don't have to be truly unique or exceptional to stay on a major label. that's utter bullshit. all you have to do to stay on a major label is sell units. that's all it comes down to. money money money money money money money. major labels are pure unadultareted evil. suckers of satan's scaley pecker. you sign with a major label you will be in debt to them your whole life and they will fuck you around. unless you're one of the handful of bands that actually manages to sell millions of records.the only way to go is with a good independent label or do it yourself. that's my view anyway. These people must have been great music lovers if they chose to follow such a difficult career path but as soon as they become management every decision is made depending on profits.And then they go and buy the independent labels or force them out of business. lepeep Posted May 18, 2004 Report Share Posted May 18, 2004 it isn't like that...if you are talking of Indies having "morals", then why would they sell to the major in the first place ?!And, if you lot live in such a naieve world that a record company is effectively a "talent charity", paying for any old shite to be released, to keep the 3 people that love the crap a band releases happy then someone needs to start living in the real world.Sure, its fucking crap when your favourite band get dropped for a label, but, its "partly their fault" for :1, siging with the devilspawn / shit record co in the first place2, blowing all the record co's money on lavish recordings, videos, crack, hoes etc ! (an "advance" in most bands eyes is : "free money"...not in the long run it ain't mate...I think too many bands go in to a deal not actaully knowing the ins and outs, and frankly not caring, I'd imagine my scrutiny levels would lower if I was woowed by a mojor...but, I'd soon come to my senses...sign to "dogfart" records, and release 3 7" that no one would ever hear, but I'd only be out of pocket by 500 quid...ho ho.anyway, rant "sort of over"... basically : its a greedy world we live in, face the reality.write a pop song or 7, make shit loads of money THEN make the music you really want to , as the record company bends over backwards to release your naval gasing pish (see RadioHead (not that they are pish....))peep Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

delboy Posted May 18, 2004 Report Share Posted May 18, 2004 yes and no mr lucifer, im sure i heard somewhere along the line (and please correct me if i'm wrong) that franz ferdinand are only contracted to domino for one album before one of the majors takes up the reigns. i used to get sent domino stuff and a lot of what they put out is really specialist electronics that probably shifts very few copies, or alternative indie if i can use such a genre like james yorkston, pram and smog. if thats the case then domino have been quick of the mark to snap up a band who are gonna make them a bit of money so they can continue to release the more avant garde stuff.as for hell is for heroes, well its the same old hard luck story that many bands before them and many bands in the future will have to go through i'm afraid. new management came in and just didn't see any potential, sadly with those in power its all about a) can the act make money?
