Joint cracking...

I crack my ankles, my back, my wrists. I don't crack my knuckles because my piano teacher used to yell at me and tell me that I wouldn't be able to play with sausage fingers-the result of cracked fingers. But I do crack my toes. It relieves the pressure buildup and manages to relieve my back pain. Maybe if more people did it, we wouldn't face as much road rage. :)

In my last blog entry, I talked about noisy bones and joints. One other joint sound that I am often asked about is that well-known sound that is made when someone cracks their knuckles. Is this something good? Is it dangerous in any way?

We are not entirely sure what causes that noise, but most of us believe that the sound is elicited from small gas bubbles popping or bursting when under pressure. As you know some find it very easy to repetitively create the sound, and some even get addicted to doing this. While it may be annoying to those around us, and of great concern to many parents, most orthopedic surgeons believe that there is no harm in cracking your knuckles. I believe that an occasional knuckle crack is fine and can be combined with some simple stretches. I do not however suggest that you do this all day long especially if you are already hypermobile or loose jointed.

Another similar popping sensation occurs with spinal manipulation that is done by many chiropractors and/or osteopathic physicians. This noise is also not well understood, but is also believed to be due to small gas bubbles popping or bursting under pressure. It too is safe. Many cringe at the sound, but I welcome it when my back is adjusted. It seems to help loosen me up a little, even temporarily.

Do you crack your knuckles or get your back cracked? Do you think it can help, or harm? Please share your stories.

I can crack the following with little or no effort:

Jaw

knuckles

Ankles

Wrists

I can also temporarily pull my thumb out of its joint, not a pretty site :p

I often feel that when i crack my knuckles my fingers actually feel better.

I've had my back cracked and it felt so good after i'd had it done. I felt lighter and more mobile, it was weird.

I was cracking my toes as i first read this thread's title, in fact i do it constantly when i'm on the comp and my neck also cracks with ease when i've been on the computer for a while. Plus i crack my back every morning and my fingers about a million times a day and my jaw makes lots of little cracks which usually lead to one big crack after which i can't crack it for a while. Cracking my knee is a rare treat though. I love cracking my joints, it does make you feel looser and less tense. My wrists are my biggest cracking joints, they can be cracked pretty much constantly. I like to open my mouth and crack them in front of it cos it seems to amplify the sound.
