See a guy called Japo at donbank primary school on a Monday night around 7pm...£2 a lesson....top guy, top player, gets you started quick, I've seen kids of like 7 busting out beats after a few weeks with him....2 fucking quid!!

hmm. depends on the style of the band really. Double kick is almost essential in modern metal these days.

I can play drums to many styles of music,punk rock is far more challenging and interesting than most.

Listen to The Ruts or The Clash or The Damned ,and compare the song structures and playing to metal songs.

I play along to Queens of the Stoneage and KILLING JOKE, because Dave Grohls drumming is superb,and he does not play double kick pedals monotonously over and over like most of the metal bands I have seen.

I think it is worth noting that I can back up my words with actions,this coupled with the fact that I have seen thousands of bands of all genres places me in a prime position to slate boring cringeworthy dirge.

No more untrue than your "requires little skill" statement about metal.

I'm no more a fan of metal than I am at punk, but I can honestly say that many metal drummers have blown me away.....can't really say the same about punk drummers.

For all the accusations levelled against punk as being lacking in musical skills, a lot of the drumming heard in punk records is very hard to replicate unless you are pretty advanced. Rat Scabies from the Damned played tricky fills at an incredible speed. Much of the drumming on Sex Pistols records is not as obviously easy to play as you would imagine.

Anyway, for the original point, I would go with who you feel comfortable with for what you want to achieve and how much you are willing to pay. Some people have absolutely no sense of timing for playing drums, you could well be one of them so I wouldn't spend too much money up front. There are simple exercises you could try and practice using hands and feet tapping out certain beats which form the basics of a drum pattern. If you can't master those then why spend lots of cash?

As with any instrument, being able to read music is not essential, many famous musicians can't read music. It does add another string to your bow I suppose and I can see the benefit of being able to pick up sheet music and learn a song more quickly, but too many people seem to hold it up as a necessity just because they can do it and it makes them feel somehow superior.

Songs like ETERNITY TOO SHORT and SPHERES OF MADNESS are prime examples of why double kick drums sound shite.Using two kicks of different sizes sounds a little better,but is still usually overkill of noise and pretty tedious.

At least the drumming on The Clash records was very varied and incorporated many styles like Big Band,Reggae,Ska,Rockabilly etc .

For every metal song which you think sounds self-indulgent and shite, I could easily come up with a boring, predictable punk song.

99% of so called punk songs are shite .

Whatever style of music I go to see I expect to be entertained,NOT bored.

I watch bands on Redemption Live most nights ,and the majority are very dull ,posing seems to be more important than writing noteworthy memorable songs,and as for the deep growl vocals,ha ha ha,I laugh my socks off nearly every time,they should provide subtitles,so I can put on my wig and rock out Karaoke style,it will suit my vocals ,I can't sing a note.

Nowadays, I'd agree with this, there seems to be an air of a 'not using double kick makes you an inferior player'. Which is bollocks of the highest order.......

True Scorge, but there are some really decent metal drummers who use the whole kit and dont just rely on kick work all the time, Mastodon being a prime example.

I just attempted to listen to 4 of their tracks on myspace - very tedious ,not worth enduring for even £200 -I downloaded syl live,pity they could not edit it so the drummer was playing the bit you are hearing,not my cup of tea, very forgettable music ,I'm off to learn Real Life by Magazine ,namby pamby with a hint of Jazz leanings ,but far more interesting to play.
