ARRRRGGGHHHHH!!! I was really looking forward to this film and it was UTTER BALLS!! Tom and I were actually offended by the completely ridiculously unnecessary sex scenes and there wasn't much violence in it at all!

Balls balls balls.

Offended? Sounds like a quality film!!!!!!!

You talk shite. It was ACE.

The sex scenes were explicit, but necessary (cannot explain why - plot spoilers), and the violence was fucking brutal and explicit - but again necessary. There isn't a huge amount of it, but thas cos its not some steroid-induced bloodbath, its an actual FILM, and the nature of sex, violence and relationships was integral. It's NOT an action film.

There were only 2 sex scenes anyway, totalling about 3-5 minutes screen time!

I encourage anyone with a bit of patience to go and see it - but it isn't for everyone obviously. 3 drunk areshole neds walked out the screening I was in yelling "Jobbies", so I guess it requries a bit of intelligence.....

I am quite intelligent thank you very much! I just thought it was terrible overall. The only saving grace was Ed Harris who I love, and I thought the violence scenes were fine I just didn't see the need for all the sex. And the ending was awful! It was just like they didn't know where to go from there, so they just stopped.

"All the sex"? As I said, less that 5 minutes long, and showing the difference between the two characters. I find it a little strange the violence was "fine" and the sex offending. Odd.

Didn't mean to imply you weren't "intelligent", you just seemed to be after a different kind of film - "there wasn't much violence in it at all".

I thought it was briliantly paced, with gut-punch moments of fear and violence - Vigo Wahtchamacallit was great - and I agree, Ed Harris was outstanding.

It didn't just end - that last scene said so much with no dialogue, it was all in the small actions and the eyes, taht nothing more was needed....

Great film.

In all honesty the film only appealed to me on one very basic level: of love and integrity. I suppose the film had a few things to offer in terms of morality and facing up to demons but it was really quote mediocre in retrospect. Viggo Mortenson portays vacuous charcater, vacuous character pretends to have hidden depth and then vacuous character becomes basis of intricate plot. Pretty unorginal if you ask me. I suppose in it's understated form it is quite remarkable, but in being praised it is no more potent than any of the two hundred other similar films. Shite.

Deary me, there's nothing better than someone trying to sound intelligent. "Woeful, woeful, woeful day."

I don't trust the opinions of those who doubt or disapprove of Cronenberg. That might sound ignorant to the possibility that he'll make a bad film, but statements like "there wasn't much violence" and "In all honesty the film only appealed to me on one very basic level: of love and integrity" make me hope that there is life on other planets. Perhaps Far and Away would've been better, that was on TV tonight. Shite.

I haven't heard one coherent statement to really incline me to think that it isn't a good film.

Brick wall, head banging.

reasons that this is a bad film:

1 the bad sex scenes. If i wanted to watch porn, i'd go to the internet cafe - not the cinema. The un necessary flashing of the twat was completely ridiculous. the second scene i will discuss even though it has no spoilers (other than that the main character had a violent history, which even the most retarded of cunts could figure out). They fuck when angry, and he's being totally dominant - a reflection of his delving into his violent past. no fucking in-depth imagary, he fucks his own wife on a stair case, in a rough manner. that's it.

2 no ending. I'm starting to get real sick of movies with no ending. this movie had zero conclusion - the lazy director's ending. "quick, cut the final scene with him shifting his eyes round nervously". you never find out about the legal aspects, about whether his links to the dodgy past are terminated, whether they get on with their lives. a story is a story. i could write a fucking movie that had no ending - anybody could. finish your fucking scripts before you film your movies, cunts.

3. the little girl had a stupid face - it looked like that of an old man's.

in a positive note, the violence was very gritty indeed and somewhat shocking. very hard hitting and the special effects were just fantastic. but even this entertainment could not save the grace of what is otherwise an odd, ramshackle script with no ending that makes no fucking sense.

I thought it was an amazing film, possibly the best movie I've seen this year. Fortunately the 'critiques' on this thread are so poor that I don't feel compelled to launch some angry defence. If you wanted more violence, go and see Ong-Bak.

PS That isn't to suggest that I don't love Ong-Bak

PPS Please God, if you're going to use a word such as 'vacuous', look it up in a dictionary first, so you don't sound like a dolt.
