The fact that these events really happened got me through the book however, if it was some random story then aye I guess I would have put it down. Also... Hunter S Thompson's (Fear and loathing in Las Vegas) books are good are kinda intertwine with the whole ethos of on the road.

On the Road was excellent. I found some other books with Dean Moriarty (Cassidy), try reading, 'The Electric Kool Aid acid test', for me this book shows how America moved from the beatnik generation to the Hippy era thanks in part to a bunch of maniacs in a magic bus, driven by Cassidy! Yoga, for people who can;t be bothered doing it is quite funny too.
