When I first got my BR1100 (or 1180 or whatever it is), I had similar problems. I found that I wasn't mastering properly, and once I was, the recordings worked fine. Have you made sure you are trying to convert the mastered version of the tracks?

Whenever I'm playing bass, I'll use my Rat as a distortion. It can't give a hugely varied amount of sounds, but it does melt my face and keep the bottom end. Chris used to use the Boss bass distortion peal in Deadenstereo, and that was pretty decent at keeping the bottom end too, although purists hate it
