  1. i thikn if anythign the problem was the fact it used to be a combo you had rehoused, as that takes away any vintage value or collectability it may have had, regardless of the fact it was done by marshall... hows the ENGL anyway? David
  2. i play guitar mainly, and have for three and a half years, though i really need so sit down and practise properly more as for my gear... a BC Rich NJ neck thru Assassin, this is my main guitar at the moment my other guitar, a marshall strat copy (i got it in the marshall 'rock kit') i rewired the pickups, so ther is now a volume for each pickup and the 5 way selecter is wired as a kill switch, im not sure whether it was the new pots and wiring, or the new circuit layout, but this made a vast improvement in the sound apart from that its stock, well apart from the nut which i broke and got replaced) this is the secection of pedals i currently have, including- Dunlop tremolo/volume, Dunlop GCB-95 crybaby, Zoom tri metal, ProCo RatII, Marshall BB-2 bluesbreaker, Marshall VT-1 vibratrem, home made feedback loop, home made A/B, home made kill box, and at the top there is my amp footswitches (marshall and vamp) and the power supply this is my amp, a Marshall JCM2000 DSL401, which i love, i have not yet heard an amp i like as much, though i would love a Marshall 1974 combo... i also play the banjo, and own a fender FB-55 banjo, though i have yet to start learning properly i have also recently started playing about with a keyboard a little bit, and would love to get hold of a better keyboard for playing about with (i am currently using a little toy one...) David
  3. just to ask again, do you know if you will be getting in a Fender MIM 52 tele, and a MIJ Jazzmaster? and if so, how much? David
  4. a di box is basically a small preamp it takes the signal, boosts it a little bit and can convert it to balanced cables or whatever else to prepare it for a cable run to the pa so it will degrade less over the cable run they can also be setup for different uses, you get some you will plug into first, with one output to the pa, and one to an amp onstage, and i saw a BBE di that could be put before the amp, in an effects loop (after the amps preamp, befor the poweramp) or between the amp and speaker, so it could suit whatever needs you have (whether you want to di after the preamp with distortion, or completely clean before the amp ir whatever) David
  5. almost all cheaper end electro acoustics use piezo systems, no extra modelling, just a small preamp with a few controls (depending on the model) (usually volume and a tone/eq control) they are slightly limited in sounds, so most of the better versions also use soundboard pickups and other similar devices, and mix them together... so, yes a piezo will sound pretty acousticey, even on an electric, the only problem is the fact that the guitar would have a solid body, not a hollow acoustic one so will vibrate and react slightly differently, but they still do a nice job of it there are many reasons to go for a electric guitar fitted with piezo, the first is cost, its probably cheaper to get a piezo for an electric than to buy a whole electroacoustic. and also there is the convenience and portability of it. as you only have to carry one guitar and you dont have to switch guitars between songs, just flick a switch... so less to carry and setup, and therefore less to go wrong. plus some people just like the sound of piezo's i know of people who use them with distortion as they would a normal pickup for some added variation in sounds, and they supposedly sound rather filthy and nasty... so for the same reason you might want to use a tele for one song instead of a les paul, you may like to use a piezo fitted guitar (be it electro acoustic or electric) instead of a normal magnetic pickup one thing, i know some guitars with piezos use two outputs, one for magnetic pickups, and one for piezo, this would probably be preferable to you can stick the piezo via the pa, and the magnetic via your amp. and you can select either or both of the outputs via switches on the guitar i still really want to give a piezo fitted guitar a shot David
  6. do you know what fenders you will be stocking exactly yet? (guitar wise) mainly, do you know if you will be getting in a MIM 52 tele, and a MIJ Jazzmaster? and if so, do you know roughtly the prices of them and how much are your strings? i need some more... David
  7. ulterior motives aside, they are brilliant pedals. also check out keeley, he mods some common types of pedals (Boss SD/DS, Rat, tubescreamer) and makes some of this own and they are top quality pedals and why can i only think of manufacturers one at a time? David
  8. for some violin esc sounds an ebaw and a guitar can be pretty cool, as with the ebow you can get the long sustained note without any pick attack, adn with a slide it would probably sound pretty sweet not sure about keybaords and the like though David
  9. will you be getting in any fender amps? also, have a look at www.lovepedal.com they make some brilliant stuff David
  10. you may be easy going about that stuff, but its still a bit intimidating sitting about with lots of people about watching you, or in complete silence when the shop is empty and the staff listening in to your playing oh, and you also need to remember to get a 'stairway...denied' sign every shop needs such a sign (or custom version) David
  11. the Musicman bass they have in rnb is secondhand... so some more musicman basses would be nice, and some guitars please too, even just the SUB range would be cool to see im trying to think of all the other effects i would like to see, the only ones i can think of so far are Moog effects (mainly the ringmod) and the Dunlop rotovibe which H&K amps are you getting in? the uber cool (and rather expensive) stuff like the triamp, or just the cheaper warps and suchlike (i did notice some H&K boxes downstairs when i looked in) i am looking forwards to see more, and will hopefully get some cash so i can actually buy some stuff i wander how many people would actually buy some of the stuff they are suggesting? David
  12. David

    EMG 81's

wrong forum try again over in the musicans forum David
  13. i would watch out for any interference from the strobe getting picked up by the speaker, though since its pretty high powered signals it should be safe it would also be funky to investigate in some lenses and the like for some fun with the strobe and bouncing the light about David
  14. `the main thing i would be interested in would be some new effects, preferably something other than boss or ibanez ones... i would be very interested in some cooler more boutique effects, people like Z Vex (i would love to try out a seek trem and ooh wah) and others that have currently skipped my mind basically lots of cool gear that you cant already get in aberdeen i had a look downstairs last week, and it looks like you will be a very cool shop. how much are setups btw? for a banjo to be exact David
  15. i really want to have a shot on one they arent supposed to be perfect acoustic sound, but are close enough for an odd song or two if you play electric guitar (and cant be bothered carrying aand micing an acoustic to let them sound their best, i think you really need a full range speaker system, ie a pa, as they wont sound as acousticey through a normal guitar amp according to one guy i know, they sound rather filthy and cool with a dash of distortion David
  16. i shall be there, a most amusing band David
  17. i would have to say go for the DSL, i have found no other amp thats as nice as a marshall (to me anyway) out of interest, why is it you are going for the 50 over 401? i prefer the 401's controls and options better (less to mess about with, and the third boosted channel) the new handwired amps (the 18watt combo, and 20watt head) look very nice, but will be uber expensive, and im not sure if they are really what you are looking for (single channel lower gain amps) i am not a fan of laneys, all the heads and combos i have played have been rather poo in my opinion (the ones in toms, exile and in bruce millers) but if its good enough for Toni Iommi... i would also check out the Peavey Classic 30/50, the classic 30 is supposed to be a brilliabt amp, and the 50 is the slightly bigger version of it David
  18. in no particular order... John Petrucci (dream theater) one of the best guitars players i have heard, can jump from slow beautiful songs to lightning fast shred instantly, and dosent seem to be stuck in one or the other. Jonny Greenwood (radiohead) a very cool guitarist, listen to some of the older radiohead stuff, some of the faster radiohead parts are absolutely amazing, very chaotic and mad. cant think of a third right now, i will get back to you later David
  19. i would like the cd as i havent yet heard you, but would like to. and dont really like going to gigs and getting my ears blasted to death unless its a band i actually want to see. therefore cds are good yus yus David
  20. i think what might be happening is that there is a small burr or sharp edge in the saddle of the d string, so when you stick the string on, it cuts into it and the string snaps... first thing to do is have a look at the bridge saddle, see if you can spot any sharp edges or burrs in the area the string touches, then you can get a small file (or sandpaper, but this is less accurate) and file oway the problem as for the two parts of the bridge, the stop tail (the bit that the ball ends sit in, the tuneomatic is the part the saddles are on) should be lower then the tuneomatic, how low depends on how you want the guitar to play, the lower it is the more tension the strings will have (and they will break easier) i would set it a little lower than the tuneomatic David
  21. what exactly is it you want to use it for? you could just make a normal A/B box (with led's) with a buffer infront of it these are two different versions of A/B boxes i have found (the version with the resister is a DOD A/B if i am not mistaken) then stick a booster infront of it (or after each output, not sure which would be best though) this is a simple buffer, not sure how it sounds but i think it should be pretty good. the other ones i woudl try would be http://www.muzique.com/schem/mosfet.htm (supposedly very transparent) or the EHX LPB1 (schematic at www.generalguitaradgets.com) (which is less transparent, but still an excellent circuit) i also found this, which is probably the best for a splitter box, as both outputs are isolated to stop any ground loops occurring or similar. hope this has been some use... David
