  1. Pitchshifter's early work was very industrial, they kinda became a lot more punk. No bad thing, they were always ace Again it depends what phase of their career you look at. Thing is, most industrial bands that weren't first wave (Einsturzende Neubauten, Throbbing Gristle etc) have embraced electronics - Try early Skinny Puppy, for example, or Front 242. FLA, by this token, are typical Industrial for the time. Seperating out the electronic/guitar thing from industrial has become nigh on impossible since the 80's (or even earlier, if you consider the likes of Kraftwerk, who I could argue were exactly in the industrial ethos). Elizium is definately more industrial/ebm than goth, so you may well like it - You certainly sound like you've got the right music interests to appreciate it. Jaymz is DJ'ing on his own the next two Eliziums, on account of me being in Switzerland next weekend and then down in London seeing Einsturzende Neubauten the Elizium after that. Bring a few mates and have a giggle, I wouldn't worry about fitting in or not - Neither Jaymz or myself make any form of effort (my innappropriate band t-shirts are almost legendary). We try to make it as open and friendly as we can, so anyone can come along and enjoy it - Drakes being Drakes it is quite a small venue and can be intimidating for people who haven't been along before. Elizium sounds scary too, but it's there for anyone who fancies something truely alternative in a club
  2. I think EBM typically lacks guitars, and verges heavily into the darker side of synthpop. Yes, definately still a sub genre of Industrial, though. Punk EBM with guitars is what I'd call the modern slant of industrial music. Take Pitchchifter, punk as fuck but still inherently industrial. It of course depends on what industrial you listen to, given that it's as broad and as contentious as the whole 'what is punk?' argument I wasn't having a go, sorry if it came across like that
  3. They're industrial. Sorry, but having listened to industrial music for years they aren't breaking any genre barriers. That's not to say they're not good, the latest track Static is really catchy and has been stuck in my head for weeks now, but I still maintain that they are unique in Aberdeen, not so in a global music context. BUT, they are just still relative newbies and their sound is developing well. Given time, who knows.
  4. Brilliant! They were stunning last time, a must for any GSY!BE fans.
  5. That was right up there for me, too. Until Yo La Tengo in Glasgow... Beaten by the narrowest of whiskers. Lots of gigs this year, though... No doubt it'll be beaten again. Best gig for me was Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds in Glasgow about three or four years back. Magic.
  6. Re: YLT/ Black Eyed Snakes I have some Low, but seriously need to invest in more. I have the latest album and the one with the cover of 'You Are My Sunshine' on, which I play whenever possible in the Bond*age Chill Out Room. What I really want to hear is the stuff they did with The Dirty Three, one my all time favourite bands ever. Enjoy YLT! Get to the front and look sweet and you may get asked to choose their final song - Like the gobsmacked woman in Glasgow last night.
  7. Cheers! I'll have to convince the rest of my entourage that they want to go to a gig an hour after getting off the train, now! I'd seen the gig on the Track and Field Organisation website, but hadn't explored it further. The Low thing reminded me. Annoyed I missed Low when they played Aberdeen through my own slackness more than anything else.
  8. ... Which reminds me, have you heard of the Black Eyed Snakes? They're playing London the night before Einsturzende Neubauten and feature a member of Low. I'm tempted, but know sod all about them.
  9. Yeah, it must have been close to an hour and three quarters. To be honest I wasn't clock watching, but I was surprised by the length given Gorkys played for between 50 and 60 minutes. Lots of extended instrumentals, feedback and mutilated guitar sounds too - Then suddenly they're floating through another song. Perfectly paced and pitched set.
  10. Well, Gorky's were okay, but nothing special. The last twenty minutes of their set was fantastic, but felt like a let down after a meandering first half an hour. Average. Yo La Tengo. My god. Those going to Edinburgh tonight shall be justly rewarded - Fantastic and engaging, brilliant. I'm still glowing.
  11. Surely you're mistaking aberdeen-music with the AUBL site, which is pretty much focussed on giving bands some free advertising and mp3's to download.
  12. Not so hot for Gorky's, but YLT faired very well in that review - Makes me hopeful for tonight.
  13. Shit, you _were_ drunk on Friday night
  14. Anyone off to see them tomorrow night in Glasgow? Double A side of a gig with Gorky's Zygotic Minci so should be pretty good, although I must admit I'm only going for YLT.
  15. Bloody hell, a fantastic night. Deadloss, yay! Great set considering the trio of ill blokes performing it. Kathryn Sawyer, wow. Totally bewitching. Gobsmacking. Craig B looked nervous as hell, his hands were shaking like nothing else - But the songs were fantastic and his voice so good! Superb.
  16. I hope you're not seriously trying to suggest that there's any link between these forums causing loss of attendence at gigs? o.O There's a whole city out there to advertise in - Perhaps promoters need to think outwith the easy options.
  17. Vangelis, about the only work of his I like o.O Bloody marvellous soundtrack, but only because it works so well with them film - Don't know if I'd like it so much if I didn't have the film noir sci-fi images to back it up with.
  18. I'm assuming Neil is trying to make the board as informative as possible and this would be much harder if it was lumped into one forum. There is an amazingly large amount of rubbish spoken on the wasteland (of which I have contributed, so it's not a criticism) so I am assuming that the idea is dedicated forums will deter people from turning what some people want as a sensible discussion into rambling incoherence. By pushing all the forums back together it would mean those that were only interested in the music side of discussion would have to put up and trawl though all the 'which koala is cuter?' threads. Besides, I read the forums by clicking on the 'new posts' button - So in effect, whichever forum it's been posted in I can see what all the new posts are. By looking at the forum on the right I can gauge wether it's going to be a useful thread to read - i.e. 'Last night's gig at Drakes' in 'music discussion' (or whatever the forum is) suggests to me it's going to be more about the bands playing and the music. The same thread in the wasteland would lead me to expect some funny story about a monkey abusing the doorman.
  19. Oooh, fear ye not - The word shall be spread for miles around Would actually be ace to DJ with Ross for that, we could even drag out our authentic greebo era t-shirts and not wash for a fortnight before hand.
  20. Major whoop! I guess Ross will probably ask too, but do you need a DJ for the night?
  21. Arse, they better not be. I'll be sobbing if I miss them :/
  22. Arse, I'd give me right hand to see Mum and Four Tet live too. Bums. Wait, I have car...
  23. Mule Variations is excellent! My favourite is Nighthawks At The Diner, though - It's a live album, but the in-between song banter is worth so much!
  24. I heard that due to a leak from one of the voters, bootlegged versions of Aberdeen bands had been found on the internet. I heard that Brian was going to bare (or it could have been 'be') a right tit at the awards. And if the rumours are to be believed, the Fudge Boys have awarded themselves 'lifetime acheivement award' for the time they both successfully tied their own shoelaces. Is it possible that the word on the street is correct, that Bond*age has been usurped from best club night?
