Moon Moon
Okay so at Leo's were discussing the idea of like a live music night. Where bands come along and play voluntarily (free) and all the money raised from tickets and selling stuff goes to a charity of choice. Venue would be Harlaw academy where the stage is absolutely massive and has full PA. Hall can hold 200ish and plus the balcony. This would be a single night event. Any suggestions or tips or even bands that would want to maybe play?
Old Gold
I would suggest having a clear idea of the charity you want to support prior to anything else. Also, very much doubt you'll be able to use a school as a venue after hours.

The school is fine with using the hall after hours as there is teacher supervision and the janitors are on late. If this falls through gav at downstairs said we could use there. Old Gold
I doubt you'll find many non-high school bands that will want to play at your high school for free. So as long as that's not a problem, break a leg.
GraemeC
I cant help agreeing that expecting a school to allow you to use the facilities after hours when there is no benefit to them is slim at best. and if you sell tickets in decent numbers then security becomes an issue and a couple of teachers and a janny wont cover it.These people will also need paying, and an overtime bill isnt something schools take lightly these days.Youre next problem is finding a venue thats prepared to accept under 18's either band members or audience. Not being negative, just giving you the heads up.
James Broonbreed
You should do one of those things where a local 'celebrity' charges to have wet sponges thrown at them. In this case, the 'celebrity' could be you. I'll give you a tenner to smash a wet sponge off your coopin.

So as long as that's not a problem, break a leg. we already have 2 non school bands already wanting to play. We're discussing venue today as if we go for the school we'll need security so people don't go wondering about the school. If we went for downstairs we'd need no security but all under 18s would need to be accompanied by an adult then we wouldn't need to provide refreshments but we wouldn't mKe a profit off it. Would generate quite an income I'd hope.
givemeasmile
Using downstairs for a school aged gig would be a complete waste of time. How many teenagers want to go to a gig with their parents? Make it a school event, like a replacement for your regular Friday night disco or whatever and hold it in the hall as you've stated above. Are there any bands in your school? Get a couple of them involved and you'll be sorted. We did a couple of these back in the day, and in reflection we had some pretty big audiences. If you can get it promoted properly through your school assemblies etc then you can't fail.

The Milner
Aye we did a few school gigs back in the day, absolutely brilliant if you pull it off right. We also took in non school bands as well, as long as it was all cleared with the headmaster there were no issues. Getting school kids on board is one of the best ideas you can have, they are far more receptive and willing to come back.

The Milner
Single song writers would probably go down quite well, try and make sure you dont have too many noisey bands, as that can put kids off.

Lemonade
Do you have back line, PA etc? That stuff costs money to hire. You really need a decent PA, even if it's just being used for the vocals.

The Milner
well we have a band asking to cover their fuel which will come out of our own pockets. The venue is free. Where are they driving from? Do you have a full back line sorted, ie amps, mics, stands, drums, and that kinda stuff? If not are you hiring, or are the bands taking everything you need? We are discussing what we are doing amp wise as no point in every band lobbing their amps down for a 30-45 minute set. We have a decent peavy bass amp but don't think 150 watts would be enough? As for guitar we'll see about getting cabs and guitarists can take their heads with them. Drums we have sorted.

Good stuff, you seem to have the bases covered. 150w should be ok for the size your playing at, if your really worried hire a few DI boxes from Toms and have the bass amp lined into the PA.Do you have an engineer to work the PA for the night? Or at least someone who knows what they are doing with one?
