Guest Stripey
The Clifford Gilberto Rhythm Combination - very jazz, very fresh, very instrumentally interesting, and MODERN.
Mouse
Marillion if your wanting more modern prog (well 80's). Get the albums Script For A Jesters Tear & Misplaced Childhood first

Get the albums Script For A Jesters Tear & Misplaced Childhood firstNew music, as in within the last year or about to be released! The last thing I want to be doing is getting in to horrid neo-prog. hehe
ragudave
Try Milanese, some re-issued Glenn Branca, the Anticon sampler, Butch Cassidy Soundsystem, Shitmat, the DJ Rupture / Mutamussik mix CD or the Soundmurderer / Remarc Cds. Ross
Already own some Morphine(ace!)' date=' but I haven't heard any of the aformentiond bands.[/quote']The Departure are the new signings to Parlaphone (EMI) and are managed by Sanctuary Management (FFAF, Your Code Name IS Milo, Iron Maiden... etc)I`d expect them to be fairly big in the coming year and a half. Their booking agent also books Marilyn Manson.www.thedeparture.comThey are also playing Moshulu on 14th October. This wasn`t meant as a plug. More an aside. Good band..... All Mapped Out is on Zane Lowe Radio 1 show and MTV2.Word!
framheim
ross, why are you so obsessed with the departures booking agent? i second philip listening to the anticon sampler, i think there'll be some stuff you really like on there. anticon records specialise in kinda psychadelic hip hop. also maybe check out some acoustic artists such as songs:ohia, iron and wine, and alisdair roberts. one band you might like is sweep the leg johnny who do a twisted fusion between post-rock, jazz and hardcore. they have a side project called check engine who are more accessible and certainly worth listening too as well.i'd avoid the killers unless you want to hear a band try and be duran duran but fail. they're kinda dull.check out silver mt zion memorial orchestraand the tralala band album - "this is our punk rock" thee rusted satellites gather and sing. i think it would be right up your street as would the last set fire to flames one. maybe. actually set fire to flames are quite scary. if you like creepy, drug induced paranoid improvised experimentalism then go for them, if not you should maybe give them a miss as well. silver mt zion you should like though, well everyone should. both these bands are related to godspeed you black emperor, who you should also love if you don't already.that's probably enough rambling from me now. Graeme
Phillip,What about something traditional with a bit of Jazz. The Fraser Fifeld CD-Honest Water is lovely. Pipes, whistles, saxaphone and gentle electronic beats. He's now playing in a trio with Graeme Stephen and Stuart Ritchie. www.fraserfifield.comMind you I think we should get you up to 1977 first, what about The Clash!! jester1470
hahahahahahahah.Sorry, to me, Marillion are some of the best consumate musicians in their fields and their influence has spread to bands such as Opeth, Dream Theater, even bands like Radiohead have listened to Marillion a fair bit in the past and been influenced. The public perception of the band is very different to the actual band and they are one of the best live bands ever, and even members of bands as diverse as Massive Attack, XTC, and The Stone Roses are fans and have worked in solo projects with the singer Steve Hogarth. They are a very underated band imho and suffer from the stigma of the name.People should give them a chance, or for thta matter even Fish's solo stuff which has progressed and changed form the public perception and the Kayleigh tab. CheersStuart
Afro Droid
Dunno much about Marillion beyond 'Kayleigh', but Fish was ace in 'Young Person's Guide To Becoming a Rockstar'!

That and the fact that I find it amusing, and at the same time deeply saddening, that a teenage kids idea of fresh music is marillion. Yeah a great moment but he's not a brilliant actor if he's not being himself CheersStuart
