i'm pretty divided on this issue. i'll agree that nme is usually a pile of crap with inconsistent opinions and are terrible for pigeonholing bands into fashionable genres, but sometimes it will magically feature an excellent band, display inspired journalism and make me think that nme might not be so bad. then the next week its back to the same old drivel. its a lucky dipi guess, and its alright for reading when theres nothing better to do

BUT their opinions tend to contradict themselves half the time, thus I see them as void (and they also worship lots of bollocks pop nonsense).

I also have an un-natural obsession with Gary Lightbody from Snowpatrol.. and the NME are always trusty and include them most weeks. Mmmmm with pictures too!

u can get all the music news you need updated every few minutes on the internet.

i thought gary lightbody was knobbing gill mills?

Well the opinions should change in a decent magazine, I can't stand the NME , but the opinions on a band should appear to be different depending on who writes the piece. A good magazine should not make a journalist tow a party line on something that is as subjective as music, so it's only natural that they contradict themselves, as its highly ulikely the same people will be writing the pieces,

You say that as if being able to play music qualifies their opinion as less or more important, most music is heard by people who can't play. As with most magazines it cover music that is popular in general with the record buying public, most of whom can't play, it doesn't matter whether they can or not doesn't make them a better or worse journalist or their opinion any more or less valid,

It was never as "Rock" as Sounds, and they gave up years ago,

its a load of bs aimed at marketing shit to schoolgirls, and egotistic pre teen boys!

NME has definately become more mainstream in recent years as it has attempted to fill the gap left by other music mags that have gone *splat* and now caters for such a wide variety of popular music that it aint ever gonna please everyone, but at least its better than Q.

On a side note, although the bulk of the general music buying public do not play an instrument, it definately increases your appreciation of most music if you personally do, and you begin to like music simply for the skill with which it is played, or so i have found anyway :D

I don't agree, I don't play an instrument and I don't think it makes my appreciation of music any less than someone who does, and being able to play an instrument doesn't make it any better. A lot of the best and most powerfull music isn't played by people doing fancy instrumentation, but by music that affects you in some other way so an understanding of the ins and outs of playing doesn't make you appreciate any music that just affects you. In fact it could be argued that the music that can reach the masses, especially those who don't understand music is better because it affects people because of the emnotional connection, not he impressive sounds.

I get Kerrang! if there's a cd on the front or if I'm going on a train or something but I can't really be arsed with it generally. Metal Hammer's good and Rock Sound always has a good cd with it but NME? I get it if there's a free cd (the shameless free cd whore that I am) but remember when they championed Andrew WK as the 'new Nirvana'??? How can you ever forgive someone something like that???

Stuart,

much like art critics who can't paint/draw/make art then...

Its always easy to criticise, if you are in no position to receive it yourself...know what I mean ?

...one of my problems with the NME is the distinct lack of dynamics, music in blighty just now covers many genres and styles, seems that the NME only hire (or publish) the people who fit the managements "idea" of what is good music (this month!)...sure there are plenty of music zines to cover the "specialist" niches, but, to me (and I may be wrong) the NME is supposed to be the bastion of British (not pop) music...but they only seem to promote "flava of the months"...and that's not fair (but life isn't , yeah yeah)...

anyway, you either love it or hate it, so who cares.

No, I do agree with what you;re saying to a point, but I was trying to say that being a good musician doen't make you have good taste, therefore your view on things is just as subjective as those who can't play. I do agree with what you say about NME, it is a badly, written, juvenile magazine, but I think it must be faced that things have changed, its much more difficult to be an atist now than it was 20 years ago, everything is far more money orientated, the same goes for journalism, people are paid by the record companies to sort out what they should put out and its the advertisment revenue etc that means the same things are covered over and over, i.e. we'll cover such and such if your recoird company buys 20,000 worth of advertising, this is broiught to the front more so in a weekly publication like NME, still wouldn'\t buy it, but having studied publishing etc for 5 years I know that sadly this is what happens and will happen more and more, lets be honest it's happening even with minority magazines like Kerrang nowadays, the basic factis none of these magazines are independent anymore and so they have certain things they have to do to survive, same with Q, which is just not as good as it once was.

I used to buy it but that cool list thing! I realised how sad it was when it started telling you what to like and dislike because of how cool a certain bands drummer dressed! What a load of dosh! Bands like Jet, who seem to get worshipped by them, write good enough pop songs but their so bland! I needed to whinge about it but I say read the Fly,its free and its a music mag, not a fashion mag!

i don't like the nme and i don't like the libertines. but more on principle with the libertines, i go out of my way not to listen to their music (what a snob i am!) one issue of the nme sticks in my mind. it was the one where they were celebrating pete libertine getting out of jail (early?) it showed a picture of him on the cover totally wankered. i was so pissed off that they were celebrating the fact that this guy was a total wanker/pisshead/idiot who would steal his friends stuff and get a huge slap on the back (by the nme) for it. [/rant]

i mostly like the fly. it's ace to find out what gigs are on wherever i'm going to be!

Music magazines have just become like tabloids, tied in with their respective satellite channels and, as a recent article in the paper pointed out, they just serve American bands mostly. How many of the same bands making the same music can be written about anyway? Jet - why not just call themselves the Beatles revisited. The Strokes - erm, Velvet Underground were doing it 30 years ago 100 times better. Just all fuck off and get some originality - PLEASE! The Observer music magazine - just keep it. Try the Wire - at least it really is about musicians making interesting music...

The NME is a tabloid and they have a place, which is to sensationalise and trivialise...that's not what music is about for me...
