Hummer, your idea could lead to a lot of problems. Some people actually want to do the "arty farty" courses because it is for them. For people who do these courses to suffer is pretty unfair.

I suppose I did an arty course "photography HND" but it pays my bills etc. Not everyone who does these courses end up with nothing at the end of it.

Aye, that's why it'd be hard to implement. That's why I'd first of all invent a time machine that lets you go into the future to find out if that person ever actually used their degree for a job, and then make them pay for it if they didn't.

Or we could just charge Royal Family members a billion pounds for tuition fees?

I concur with you there.

What people seem to forget is with the more popular degrees... a lot of the work force is "saturated" i.e: more people graduating than there are jobs.

So even with a degree... it's not guaranteed you'll even get a "decent" job for several years after you graduate.

;)

This is ESPECIALLY a problem for those without a good level of work experience connected to the job.

Hence I said it depended on what degree you take and have met mr reality

philospohy degrees are VERY popular with graduate employers in management consultants at the moment because they're one of a small number of degrees that teach you how to think objectively.

/x

I'm not surprised. I did three weeks of a Politics, Society and Philosophy course at uni, and it was possibly the most rewarding of all the courses I've done.

However, they wanted you to write 2 pages of stuff every week. That was too much effort for a course I was just doing for credits, which is why I switched to French & German Politics for the remainder of the semester.

But still, I'd say most of the folk in that class were typical "fookin stuuudents" types.

it's true about the types of people on those courses but like you say, they are rewarding. i did joint honours in management and computing but in 1st and 2nd years you have to pick a 3rd subject and i did philosophy in both those years. i really enjoyed it and it helped me out a lot in my other subjects because it involves a completely different approach.

it's easy to write subjects off as "arty" and say that they're a lot of shite but they often prove to be a lot more useful than you'd imagine.

AND kids' date=' don't forget that if you do get that 26k a year job you've been promised... that person called the taxman that you've been avoiding all these uni years will take away about 40% of that PLUS there are living costs (pressuming you still don't live with your mother) council tax and so forth.

The wonderful world of non-studentness.

I'm such a killjoy.[/quote']

OK, thanks mum. You don't think people know this anyway?

It was in responce to the 2k a month after you graduate comment.

Read the thread properly you snotty little shit. If I was your mother I would have shot you years ago.

Snotty little shit, thanks for that. Looks like someone is still living in primary school.

My comment was in response to what I quoted, obviously.

I have read the thread, and good for you for having such strong opinions. What you've come out with is hardly revolutionary. Nice to know so many students bother you so much though :)

Horseshit.

Most people I know at uni are doing "arts degrees" or some useless shite they will never use in the actual jobs they will end up getting - unless they go into teaching.

The amount of people I know doing psychology for example.... do you know you can't actually be a psychologist without doing the full Phd?

Gah... Students...

Edit: and school is free because everyone has the right to a basic education.

i'm sorry, do you mind not calling something i say "horseshit". you may not agree with it but you could atleast saysomething more polite like "i disagree".

She lives with a student' date=' I'm sure she'll cope. You might wanna listen to her, despite her acid tongue Sharon is a heck of a lot more clued up than alot of people, certainly more than you.[/color']

Hurray for her. Whatever she's come out with here I was already clued up about when still at school/ through career advisers/ talking to graduates, teachers etc.

Maybe she could use her acid tongue a bit less. I hardly gave her ammo to call me a snotty little shit.

my boyfriend is going back to do a Phd... these are "students" who put the higher education system to good use.

but is he putting the higher education to good use or is he simply trying to avoid the "real world" for a little bit longer? surely his education would be more use to the rest of the world if he used it to get a job and paid some taxes ;)

what's his Phd in anyway? anything arts related? :D

I think the "thanks mum" bit might be what you're looking for.

She's more clued up than you in that she works for a living and knows what she's talking about when the tax man comes to call.

You responded to a quote out of context' date=' Missy.

Are you aware of what that means? It means in student terms... if you'd done that in a paper you wouldn't have been awarded any marks. ;)

Yes, it is nice to know that some students bother me... many don't. I live with a medical student and my boyfriend is going back to do a Phd... these are "students" who put the higher education system to good use.

As I said before, as a taxpayer...[b'] I merely object to the funding of students whom persue degrees that cannot be applied outwith their own selfish means.

Please, should you wish to respond with another snotty, presumptious, ill-educated post... I'll be more than happy to respond.

That I agree with. And other points you've made to.

What I object to is the attitude of your response to one little question. But wahey, it's only the internet! Now, I have work to go to, to help me get through uni.

Fair enough. Tongue was in cheek.

Of course she's going to be more clued up than me. I believe she's in her early 20s or something. I've only been out of school and a student for one year.

Having seen a large number of fuckwits at work who have left uni with the bit of paper but minimal, if any, common sense, I find it laughable that anyone expects to walk out of uni and into a 2k+ a month job. Experience counts a lot more than theory for most jobs, the uni is merely the grounding. Unfortunately leaving uni can develop into a cycle of can't get job due to no experience, can't get experience because of no job......

This thread's a heap o' shite.

Anyone who thinks that they can walk out of uni and straight into a 26K plus a year job is - in my opinion - too stupid and naive to be studying at a university in the first place. As it stands about half of the people with a shiney new degree are lucky enough to be walking into any form of full-time employment. I've lost count of the number of my workmates and customers that i've spoken to who can't even find a decent job to work in upon completion of some of the most amazing degrees.

Anyone that thinks any degree is easy and done by someone only for the sake of it is also a fanny, they don't take 4 years to complete for fun. Even subjects considered 'easy' like Film Studies require a high level of studying, comitment and understanding equal to that of subjects like English, Politics, Geography and Phylosophy. 60% of jobs for people with degrees are avaliable for people with any degree... the 40% being reserved for the more specialist qualifications like Engineers, Doctors, Vets... As spoons said earlier, it shows the ability for a person to comit and apply themselves to something.

Anyone who thinks students are all lazy is a fuckface. The students who are there to study and apply themselves quickly rise above the 'students' who are wasting time (usually pushed in by their parents - who end up packing their bags after a few weeks of their first essay.) I'm sick to the teeth of having to defend my position as a student to people that think it's all easy and a joke. Nobody in my course gets a top grade unless they study (lectures, tutorials and reading) around 40/50 hours a week which is easily a full-time job, mix that up with working a part time job and trying to keep up a social life... it's pretty fucking tough, and my course isn't near the hardest.

This isn't aimed at anyone, i just get well pissed off at most peoples pre-conceptions of students and our 'life of Riley'.

the college photography course is designed to get employment and is probably more useful than a lot of photography courses. be prepared for a frustrating time with resources. the photography department is well stocked most of the time but i ended up buying a lot of my own equipment last year as it was better than the lottery of getting college equipment(4 classes all trying to get the same stuff at the same time). one tip as well' date=' be polite and patient with gordon the technician. he's a very stressed man who does the job of many people and can lose his temper quickly but if you're nice to him he'll be nice to you.

as for tuition fees, you should get them paid so long as you're going on to a higher level of education for a full degree. so you get them for up to 4 years so long as you move up a year each time. if however you've done and hnd at college then that's the equivalent of the first two years at uni so if you go into second year you'll have to pay that. is my understanding of it anyway. i pay my tuition fees as i've been at college twice before(this time i'm passing though) and that's fair enough.[/quote']

cheers for that. I'll keep that in mind. :D:D (wow I never would have thought I would bump into others doing/done the course! Whats the first year like?)
