framheim
this is becoming a pet hate of mine, all over the place(not just on these forums) people seem to think it's perfectly acceptable to spell lose as loose. so for those who are confused here is the examples from dictionary.co.uk:http://www.freesearch.co.uk/dictionary/loseand for loose:http://www.freesearch.co.uk/dictionary/loosei know it sounds petty but it happens all the time and it's such a simple word to spell. what do they teach people at schools these days?anyone else noticed some commonly misspelled words?ps i know my spelling and grammar isn't always perfect either, i'm not claiming to be king of spelling. honest

PrincessHolly
This is one of my biggest pethates too. Particularly in text messages where it completely changes the meaning of what the person is saying.Another thing that annoys me is people who write my boyfriend's name Mark. Even though it's Marc. And they usually spell it Mark when responding to a text message where I've spelt it correctly, so they clearly have already been informed how it's spelt. That's just me though. Bodast
I can imagine that would be annoying.. But I would probably spell it Mark if I wasn't told, words ending in 'c' sometimes just look weird, unless they're novelty words like picnic and havoc. And panic. Wait, maybe it's because it ends 'consonant-c'?
PrincessHolly
I wouldn't mind if people didn't know it's spelt the european way, but they get it wrong, i correct them, then they get it wrong again. They probably do it on purpose. I should start spelling their names wrong. That'll teach them.

Bodast
It's funny to think about how the rules of language gradually change.. Obviously you read stuff from the 1400s and there's a huge difference, but even between the text on that site from 1918 and today, you notice things. Is it still incorrect to write 'today' rather than 'to-day'? And 'anyone' rather than 'any one'?Just thought of another word by the way, which I HATE! Independence. Grrr... IndepedAnce is a French word... IndependEnce is an English word. Fume...
*Amy*
I think the most annoying spelling mistake is 'alot'. What the fudge is 'alot'? You don't say 'alittle'. ARGH!!!
Penny
oh god i HATE when people spell things incorrectly, or use the wrong word.. it does my nut in.ESPECIALLY over text messages, it gets me all confused and angry.. and i have been put off a few guys from this horror. also.. i hate when people say things like 'i got hut on friday'.. you bought a hut? someone threw a hut at you? its HIT not HUT. or.. 'i bet your brother at tennis'.. sorry? you placed a bet? no its BEAT not BET. or.. when people say 'came' instead of 'come'.. urgh.. so many flaws in the world of language these days..what are schools used for these days? it sure isn't for learning.. Frosty Jack
Before it opened, the new place near the top of Union Street - Cinammon - had a big sign in the window saying "The Countdown Has Began". And now their menu has apostrophes splattered all over it.I will never go in.
HummerOfIntenseEvil
I agree with all the sentiments here, but one thing puzzles me... I remember Cowboy Dan starting a similar thread a few months ago, and people were calling him a cunt and "OMG hoo cares, it's only a forum, get a life man! Do you have a dictionary beside your computer LOLZ!" type stuff. So how come no one's gone completely nuts yet?My pet hate: too instead of to. I can sort of understand folk using to instead of too, but ADDING a letter???Also: people thinking you need a dictionary by your side to be able to apply simple english grammar to your typing. Or at least using that as an "insult".
