  1. It's quite common for esquire builders to put a stealthy neck pickup under the guard - a hot one, naturally
  2. http://www.tdpri.com/forum/just-pickups/ Lots of Tele wisdom over there............ Axesrus do good ones on a budget. The Broadcaster, that comes stock in a Baja, is pretty good as well.
  3. Good movie. The 'extra' gigs are great............ on the school bus, in the cafe, at the bowling alley, etc.
  4. In retrospect, the Girls Aloud version fell flat.............. the Public Enemy approach had mixed reviews- and the Leonard Cohen take was a flat-out mistake..................
  5. Some of those 40s and 50s lap steels are little MOTS works of art. The more so, if you can't play slide:-)
  6. Sooner or later, you have to learn a little basic soldering. Who wants to drag their guitar into a shop and leave it there- then pay through the nose- because it needs a £2 replacement jack? Even if you don't see yourself as 'handy', it's quite satisfying to trace problems with your gear and be able to fix them. Every little repair or mod is a step up in confidence, towards building your own pedals, guitars and amps. Start small. Buy a Switchcraft jack from Thomann or take to bits the plugs on your once-favourite cable and re-solder the hell out of 'em, until the crackly noises and inopportune cut-outs are a thing of the past.....................

    Boss OD3

    That's what I call a quick sale......... ;-)
  8. Can't guarantee the accordion player shows up but............... we play at the Smiddy in Daviot, on the last sunday of the month (26th, this time) and start at 3. If you can make it, I'll do 'Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On' as well
  9. Graham, having witnessed the movie of your wonderful lobby, I now feel compelled to play 'Great Balls of Fire', at my next pub session. I don't play a lick of piano- but one of my confederates is an accordionist. She played a gentle blues solo over 'Sweet Black Angel', last time out, so ............

    Sunday Bump.......
  11. The only thing is, I'm currently playing this upside-down as I'm left-handed. Japanese Strats can be really fine................. and the upside -down guitar thing is Albert King cool. To get the full effect, you leave it strung as a righty and smoke a pipe onstage Albert was a great player....with a baaad attitude!
  12. Mike Henderson and the Blue Bloods- First Blood Corey Harris- Down Home Sophisticate
  13. I associate that song as much with Steve Gibbons, as with Chuck. It propelled him from King of the Birmingham pub rockers to stadium tours of the US. If I'm playing even more Chuck Berry songs, 'Promised Land' and 'Carol' would come up pretty quick- but for added audience recognition, 'You never can tell' is a better bet........
  14. Don't be too hard on yourself, just because your stuff isn't (yet) as good as the famous musicians you like can produce. Try your stuff out in public, then ask the audience what they think of it- you might be pleasantly surprised. I agree that you should avoid over-thinking the process. Try listening to some entirely new (to you) style of music- and start carrying paper and a pen around, to get fragments of ideas preserved, while they are fresh. Collaboration is another avenue you might explore?
  15. This thread is incomplete, without reference to Chuck Berry. Through all my changing tastes in music, 'Johnny B Goode' remains the most influential song i ever heard. It inspired me to play guitar and to buy a 335-alike. I play it in the pub, on the last sunday of every month. Sometimes- as a complete contrast- I also play 'Bye Bye Johnny'................

If it has a 30 watt amp, a big speaker, reverb and tremelo attached, we're getting there...... A big, heavy tweed book case- that sounds good

If it's got sides, it's a bookcase, right? Aren't shelves just fancy planks?

    Wanted

If anyone has the following for sale, please let me know....... A Peavey Delta Blues- the one with the 15" speaker A Boss Blues Driver A Gordon Smith with P90s A Danelectro reissue (guitar). Can't hurt to ask...................
  20. I can also recommend Thomann. Excellent communication, delivery in 2-4 days, good packaging, good stock control and availability.
  21. On the Tele forum, I think it's fair to say that Ron Kirn is the most popular of the bespoke builders. Even with the usual caveats about internet recommendations, you could do worse than speak to him about your preferences for a fenderish guitar. He's in Florida.
  22. Black Keys fans might like The Skinny, by Ian Siegal. Branches of the same tree.
  23. Great singers......... saw Dave Scott last night, at the Smiddy in Daviot- a riotous Halloween evening. Lyndon Anderson Band coming to Aberdeen next saturday, with Son Henry opening. Lyndon is a killer harp player, too............
