What a shame............. I've been listening to- and latterly playing the guys songs, my whole life. Wonderful, laid back delivery, killer guitar tone, widely influential. A huge loss.

Leather pickguards are sadly fashionable amongst the dressier country players........... Pinecasters are the business, though. Some of the stuff coming out of old barns and such is very dry and dense- popular with builders like Ron Kirn, from Florida. There's a very long history of making Tele bodies out of pine (and of putting Bigsby Trems on them).

I think Fender might have discontinued them. Shouldn't be expensive, second hand- and highly moddable, if that's your thing.

Probably a wise move. There are loads of interesting Tele bridge pickups to look at- but only a couple of decent (and stupidly expensive) WRHB sized options out there.

Collected a couple of amps from Dennis today- and asked him if the Aberdeen Music forum rumour was true...... that he was winding down. Relax.... he's still going strong and has no intention of giving it up. He did mention that he no longer works on keyboards or solid state amps. Judging by the amount of classic, tube driven hardware scattered around his workshop, I doubt he needs the aggravation of an MG15 or Cube. Yes, a local guy is/would be handy- but Dennis is the Daddy....... and his work is worth the geographical trouble.

There will always be a market for 4 grand Martins, Custom Shop Fenders and exotic hardwood delicacies, from many marques. Very lovely- but not necessary, for the purposes of self expression, performance and paying the bills. In the mists of history, when I was a teenager, cheap guitars were often literally unplayable- but this hasn't been the case for decades. Please post examples of inexpensive instruments, which have stood the test of time and maybe been gigged extensively.

Vintage wound pickups are best in a Casino... but the Epi ones are way too hot. I recommend Gibsons, if you aren't- or Lollars, if you're spending someone else's money

If you just want a practice sized amp, a Champ 600 and a boost pedal would come in under budget and give you loads of creamy Fender tone............. Since you've ruled some brands out- and if you're wanting more volume- I'd give a hard look at the Mustangs.
