I bought 'Big Trouble in Little China' cheap a while back in a fit of nostalgia, unfortunately I found it to be hopelessly pish nowadays, crap special effects and that old slapper from Sex in the City being rubbish. I also revisited 'Escape from LA' for the same reason and found it a pish film for many reasons but also good in a crap kinda way. I think my expectations were too high first time round due to an enduring love of 'Escape From New York', definitely Kurt Russell's finest John Carpenter collaboration, closely followed by 'The Thing'.

There's nowt wrong with the tune but this particular one I feel would work better with a band as opposed to solo.

There were a few laughs in the 1st half, Saxondale worked better than I expected, but still isn't a great character to try and move into a live setting. I think that's half the trouble, his characters work best interacting with others, which means Paul and Pauline Calf's Video Diaries, Saxondale and I'm Alan Partridge are much preferable to the live show. Alan Partridge worked well because the concept of promoting himself as a life coach to an audience was a natural extension to the character. Other than the Partridge medley (Under Pressure being a particular highlight), the songs were all pretty crap and obvious filler material. The last song started as an amusing send up of his public image but outstayed it's welcome and descended into shock value by overuse of the c-word. Overall, not worth 30-odd quid and I wouldn't rush back to see him live again, i'll stick with the Saxondale and Partridge DVD's.

Try Silver Ray. 3 piece band, piano, guitar and drums, no vocals. 'Humans' is a good starting point. maybe not piano orientated enough for what you are after though.... The Johan Johannsson 'Fordlandia' album I bought recently may fit the bill.

Guns 'n' Roses were quite good in their time for that kind of thing, pissed all over Motley Crue etc. At least their music is listenable. I think I actually like them more now than I did then.... Making an album for this long and keeping songs from over the whole period is bound to sound weird and inconsistent, every report I remember about this album-in-progress over the years has mentioned Axl's latest influences.
