  1. Why does anyone so utterly unworthy as to play gigs to 1 person desperately want pictures of themselves? Sounds like they need to work on some other things.
  2. It's just staged play-acting. Photographers can very easily alter reality and it makes me feel slightly uneasy when people go to such lengths to shoot bad bands. Photography for the sake of photography I guess, but useless as a factual record. And if something didn't happen the way the photograph suggests then the only way it can be considered is aesthetically, but I don't happen to find pics of dudes with guitars very appealing.
  3. My complaint is really of those who insist in taking photographs of terrible bands playing to about three people. It's just very easy to tell lies about gigs through a lens, sanctifying 'bad' musical moments as something to behold / worthwhile because thats the way it may appear if I stand really close and take a wacky action shot of the singer. For everyone has a shot of himself looking rather dashing on his myspace.
  4. I agree. These guys should keep their reality manipulation techniques out of my eyeline, and stop sanctifying every shite band that happens to play at the tunnels. It's music, for God's sake!
  5. I'd like to re-affirm Alan's recommendation of both Leo Kottke and John Fahey. Both have at times a relatively traditional sound, however continually interrupted by unusual passages and, of which this song is a reasonable example: Similarly with Fahey: The shifts in this tune are really interesting. I love the way dissonance creeps in. There's a good 'line' throughout the tune, almost like a narrative. Sketchy at times, sounding improvised at others, imperfect, but definately an interesting performance.
  6. Another question: Andy McKee / Candyrat records crew: 1980s hair metallers of the fingerstyle world? Though I REALLY like this piece: Apparently Antoine Dufour played at the lemon tree last year to fifteen people...: (That's one of his more tasteful pieces: very plush reverb)
  7. Downloading.. Yeah, Chet's good. Funny demeanour too. Peter Lang also I've just discovered. I've really been teaching myself the past few months but would like to learn a few tunes if anyone can suggest something simple which will also shed light on new areas of interest. Tommy Emmanuel's 'Boom-chick' lesson on youtube was pretty useful. Or indeed, exercises or techniques. It took quite a while just to get a smooth '1-2-3-4' or 'thumb-index-middle-ring' over chord changes. It's really an interesting way to play. I enjoy 'de-mistifying' passages which seem hard at first but are really just combinations and patterns...
  8. I've been getting back into guitar playing recently, particularly fingerstyle. Just wondering if anyone else does this? Really enjoy Tommy Emmanuel. Was always 'aware' of him but never realised what he was about. Great character, typical nutty Aussie, and refreshingly unpretentious. Also like Alex de Grassi. Simpler than Tommy, but refined and sparing in his technique. Any recommendations? Oh and locally - Craig Davidson: Craig Davidson on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Downloads Was really impressed when I saw him at the tunnels recently.
  9. Samuel Johnson (wrote the first english dictionary, reported to be incredibly arrogant, fat, grotesque and prone to spitting whilst eating). Reckon it'd be quite funny. Hugh Macdiarmid. 20th century Scottish writer. One of the SNP's founding members, though was later kicked out. Incredibly outspoken and overtly scathing about those he didn't approve of but very, very funny. Few photos existing in which he doesn't look completely nuts. Darwin. Created a theory which obliterated conceptions of the universe, charging debate around the subject of God's existence, defining the secular era in which we reside. Shakespeare. So little is known about this chap yet few have a more pervasive influence upon British character, thought and language. Laid the foundations of our modern era. Steve Coogan. Partridge is simply the greatest comic character ever. Peerless. Hitler...Would be interesting to witness someone who could captivate and subdue an entire nation and bring about events so utterly depraved and despicable.
  10. Another good one from the best episode of Knowing Me.., spoken to French co-host: "...we love the channel tunnel, but for goodness' sake don't send us any more of you rabid dogs" I'm pretty sure it's preceded by 'My friends back in England would kick me if I didn't say this...'
  11. Best things I read recently: Art Spiegelman - Maus & Will Eisner: A life Force Both comics. Any other recommendations along these lines much appreciated.
  12. Headline of today's daily star: Bit weird..
  13. In response to the the question over whether Jade should / shouldn't have publicised this: Whether or not you like Jade Goody, she undeniably occupies a space within our consciousness. In fact I'd go as far to say that the persona of Jade Goody bears almost no resemblance to an actual graspable individual, but is in fact an abstract collection of ideas. It hits the headlines because Jade Goody as we know it is a media-derived entity, in that she exists in, determines certain parts of, and was created by this industry. Therefore it is only fitting that she will leave by the same door. The reverse, that is, JG quietly receding back into normality for a quiet, dignified death, is unimaginable. I find the fact that she annoys you all so much to debase yourselves with cruel verbal abuses is testament to her success, forcing me to (almost) admire her audacity, and drawing forth oft-quoted lines from Dylan Thomas: Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
  14. RIP Great songwriter, with a guitar technique I'll always aspire to.
  15. If anyone's interested, I just popped up a few snatches from a gig last friday; KimyReizeger on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Downloads feedback welcome:)
  16. ...to cite examples of funny hip-hop. But fuck it. JIMBOB on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Downloads The best bits are when he tries deep, sonorous 'yeaahhhhhhh's
  17. Off King Street: Urquhart Road / Roslin Street / seaforth road. Loads of parking round there and ten minutes from town. Asda at the beach; ten mins to town. Morrisons.
  18. Taking the choice to attend university is hardly a testament to the power of individual liberty. Much the opposite, many factors influence people's decision to attend, as with most other conceivable concepts. If that's your definition of freedom you clearly have a very restrained mind and poor imagination. I never said 'Attitudes Are The Problem'. I didn't suggest at any point that any single factor constitutes the problem. Nor did I even hint that legalising the drug would improve things. Far from it, my whole point, was that there are many, many, many factors that influence things. Cut out the black-and-white, cowboys-and-indians shit. Again, putting absolute emphasis on individual will, as though anyone 'decides' to get hooked so they can stay at home and not work 'because they want to'. It's an embittered viewpoint. It fosters resentment and bad feeling within you. Try and take a reasoned look on the world without resorting to 'what about my taxes' arguments.
  19. Which may mean there's an element of truth in it... 'Never! They're all wrong!'
  20. So with you it's leave rationality, discussion and debate at the door ...why bother posting?
  21. There is no such thing as free will. Get that out of your head! People's actions are determined by all manner of complex and connected events and scenarios. Maybe you should think about how certain laws and attitudes we hold towards drug-users may perpetuate the problem? You can keep viewing others as irritants if you want but you will end up miserable, alone and hate-filled.
  22. I think it's a banger. Have heard you play it at gigs I think - nice tune, interesting production; maybe a bit overtly Radiohead.. but who cares cuz the drums r wickit and it's energized...
  23. It was actually built on entirely positive motivations. I've always thought Kemnay is a much more pleasing little town than kintore. It has a much nicer centre and four or five genuinely fantastic countryside walks on its peripherals (not to mention the 'Viewpoint', a manufactured hill right in the centre which gives you a great look on the whole place. Yes, there there are neds, but there are neds everywhere and you have kids and live in Kintore they'll go to Kemnay Academy anyway...
  24. email the company and you'll find out.. Anyone experienced hard-selling snap-fax hoarders before? This one guy...around uni...put me off my bloody cigarette so he did. Worse than Shelter.
