  1. That is just the current version of the proposal - There have been different versions all the way back to original expansion the late 70s, which got legs again when the deregulation of Prestwick opened-up Translatantic travel to any airport that could handle it. Before then, the argument was that Aberdeen should be exempt as a special case. It think its as much an oil biz political/status thing as anything else. There was probably a time when operations were much more dependant on guys who were constantly jetting back & forth. The complaint that it was madness that such an "important" industry lacked a direct connection to the US was often bandied about. But yes, every time the economy took a dose of the sniffles, the idea got canned for a while so it would probably be unsustainable. Dunno about the airmiles/alliance things - Didn't I read something recently that suggested we might be about to see big changes there? I took it that the partnerships sounded strained and the main airlines were sick of the idea altogether, wanting some sort of new generation incentives instead? Then there is the airfreight thing - BAA's target is to nearly triple the current tonnage in the next ten years or so - access for larger aircraft would help that one no-end.
  2. Yes, whatever happened to the idea that a bit of dirt is actually quite good for you?
  3. Yes, that is the trouble - Once they decide to kill a place like that, it is usually fairly simple to run it down to the point where folk lose interest because it has lost almost all it once had to offer. Then it also reflects its foundation in simpler times - Leisure expectations seem to have changed so much in the last couple of decades, for young kids in particular. A lot of parents would freak at the idea of risking their kids geting a bit dirty at a farm.
  4. Maybe we have spent too long listening to the same guys banging-on about it & how much a transit through Schipol or London costs them?
  5. Mainly so they can run transatlantic widebody services IIRC. Aberdeen-Houston has long been a stated objective of certain interests here. IIRC, their is/was a campaign group plugging the route. Then there is also the airfreight interest. Which is quite high IIRC.
  6. Some view any sort of publicity as good and they are as entitled to support their cause in their way as we are to any of ours IMO. Besides no matter how misguided, a bit of principled mayhem is no bad thing occasionally, especially up here where too much protest/opposition tends to the earnest/worthy & gets stomped for it. Also, the part of me that was running NIREX and other nuke interests ragged 20-odd years ago might just be saying "Well-done guys!"
  7. Dunno - There are certain Beemers that are somehow just right in orange: The R90s is one of them IMO.
  8. I've seen that one about as well! o_O There is a bright yellow Seat (I think) with a heeeuge sculptural rear spoiler going about town as well - I've seen it a few times on St Machar Drive recently. Its as good as a sunrise on a dull morning!
  9. Well, seeing as there a good few of us going, how about seeing if Bob at the Donview wants us to host us for a wee sesh before the gig? http://www.aberdeen-music.com/forums/other-clubs-venues/53990-donview-bar.html
  10. Dunno, they had had a good few hours, caused a degree of disruption & got their cause widespread coverage in the media - With a lot of outraged squealing along the way. Sounds like a pretty successful action to me? Even if they did come over like a load of incoherent, overprivileged kids.
  11. They report it here: BBC NEWS | Scotland | North East/N Isles | Nine charged over airport protest I suppose we will just have to wait & see what comes out in the wash. And yes, I heard the cancer paitent thing on the radio as well. Again, how verifiable is that, either way?
  12. Sad news - Doonies was keeping a number of traditional breeds that have all but died out in general farming.
  13. Yes - This. Young is the first act in a very long time that has made me want to buy a ticket there & the only reason I did was because June is a very busy month for me & I doubt I'd get the time off to go & see him elsewhere.
  14. Funnilly enough, this did not come from within the council. But it is only one of the more minor concerns FTM, you are right about there being much more pressing arguments. Yes, provision for the runway extension has been there since the 70's expansion - that was probably only a matter of time.
  15. Don't bank on that - There was a very long period where it was obvious that someone had plans for Menie but we had no idea who. Equally, if the rumours I'm hearing turn out to be true, Trump may well have a direct involvement in the airport expansion.
  16. Very excited - Tickets booked. Thankyou Alan!
  17. Last time I was at a gig in Leeds. I was offered, in fairly short order a shag off some guy's partner & a blowjob in exchange for cigarrettes - this was early evening. We rounded-off the night by having a run-in with the Police & were racially abused by a Tesco security guard. Not in a hurry to go back there again!
  18. Be a bit difficult to stop teenagers hanging-out IMO, most of them are only biding time till they can get into a pub or a club. Never mind that in doing so, we'd end-up looking like some no-fun calvinist shithole on the periphery of nowhere. Oh! o_O
  19. Personally, if we have to have them, I'd rather a gang of Goths or Emos than a crowd of neds. I can't say I've ever had any bother from the former. So if that is what they want to do, leave them to it IMO.
  20. Do you mean "sounding" ? If so, google Baden-Powell & it. He was famous for having a specially made "sounding stick" o_O
  21. Think it might have something to do with publicity after being charged & coming to trial? A former colleague was done for sex offences a few years back & between being charged & the trial, he grew a huge chunk of face fuzz. Which was shaved-off once he was eventually released. Maybe thought his neighbours wouldn't recognise him, despite his identity being well known in his smallish town? It will be too long to post any links but another thing to remember is that there have been several instances of authorities down south getting difficult offenders off their books by simply buying them a ticket to somewhere in Scotland. Often with very little by way of information exchange with the authorities up here.
  22. Nonsense - I don't think I've ever seen anyone getting stick from fellow gym goers, whatever their size. After all, everyone had to start somewhere & I would guess that most were in exactly the same boat to begin with. I needed to shift well over four stone because of all the weight that had piled-on when I was laid-up with the surgery & eating constant stodge to minimise the side effects of stomach-destroying painkillers.
  23. There were a few when I went but at least two of them have since gone down for a long time in a case that was rather high profile at the time. which was a surprise as they were model gym-goers. Polite & encouraging etc.
