  1. Eh? Insurance doesn't physically exist, neither does a lot of things. So you don't buy them? Ever heard of tangible and intangible assets? They're not different species of orange. I DJ with mostly downloaded songs. Why? - I've saved a ridiculous amount of money. For DJ's, we don't need the entire 14-20 songs on an album, maybe just one or two. - Sound quality is not that much different, and if you're in a bar/club could you really sit there and for every new song the DJ played, be able to say whether it's vinyl, cd, md or downloaded and burnt? Doubtful. - It's a shit load less to carry. - And before anyone starts with "real DJ's use vinyl" bullshit, which, by the way, only non-DJ's ever say, most top DJ's use CD's, MD's even laptops (Ableton Live) these days. Some made the switch years ago...can you argue that with someone who makes 2000 an hour? - Raking through dusty record stores is great but spending 6-8 for one song is for serious collectors. DJing is a business and if you can spend 79p on a song or buy the vinyl for 6, then economics dictate that you go for the cheaper option. It's still the same song. Just read all that back...sounds a bit of a rant, but it's just common sense. Then again, not everyone has common sense.
  2. I'm not going to advertise for jazz amateurs?!
  3. That's fighting talk. Do you not think there are enough bad musicians in world already? I gave up bass guitar for DJing...and how many guitar players in Aberdeen can say they (individual not band total) earn around 25 - 70 per hour consistently? I remember getting 80 between 5 of us at Malt Mill...rock and roll! I tell you folks, playing other peoples music is the way forward!!
  4. As an alternative to Jazz, we might consider live soul. Please PM or email waxhiphop@gmail.com. Ta
  5. For Sunday nights. Must be technically-competent, with an upbeat style of jazz. Instrumental preferred, although vocalists might be considered. Please get in touch via PM or email waxhiphop@gmail.com. Thanks.

  7. Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings Would the great public of Aberdeen be interested? http://www.daptonerecords.com/pages/home.html http://www.popmatters.com/music/reviews/j/jonessharon-naturally.shtml Reminds me of Lynn Collins.
  8. If you're not bothering with the whole mixing/cutting/scratching shenanigans, then start by finding your way around pro cd players/turntables and mixers, just so that if you come across any technical glitches whilst DJing, then you'll understand and know how to correct them. Then network like a crazy mofo and make friends in high places(for Aberdeen read altitude, not actual high society...although quite a few people in Aberdeen think they're a bit more important than they actually are!!). Good luck...and remember my guestlist, as I'm too important to pay entry fees.
  9. Two pairs of Fingathing tickets up for grabs... Q. Name the two members of Fingathing (real names not alias')... Answers to waxhiphop@gmail.com Deadline for entries - Friday 9th Sept.
  10. Over 18 mostly. Would consider under 18, but special circumstances.
  11. Bollards just got fitted...so fat chance! Could do with some lighting from the Green. Any council staff on this forum? - (not that you'll identify yourselves, kind of like admitting you're in the KKK!)
  12. If it weren't for the Tunnels, this venture would be riskier than it already is! We don't plan to compete with the Tunnels, and would like people to feel safe in the Carnegie Brae area with two sets of doormen and additional numbers walking about. Saturation? Perhaps, but there is more of a market in Aberdeen for open-minded venues than niche clubs. That's a mistake we don't plan to make (not that we have any planned mistakes).
  13. What style(s) of music? Are you any good? Do you know who the top local DJ's you will be competing with are? Are you better than them? Food for thought...
  14. A new venue is opening on Carnegie's Brae (opposite The Tunnels) for the start of October. The club capacity will be 600 although we have the option of closing down the second arch and reducing this to around 250-300. Looking for ideas from DJ's, promoters and anyone else. The space is ideal for everything from live music and DJ's to art exhibitions and fashion shows, etc. In-house we have a portable stage, full top-of-the-range DJ set-up and plan to have a varied drink selection (not too pricey either). The plan is to open the venue to outside promoters as well as our own in-house promotions. We're negotiable on all aspects including hire and security (just don't ask for a percentage of the bar take). To dispel any potential rumours, this venue is under completely new ownership and management. Interested parties can either add their comments here or PM me.

    Rap Artist

It's not bad..."Microphone" stands out more than the rest. I wouldn't add it to a set but I give the guy due credit for his efforts.
  22. What if I show you mine? Sorry that's lame...
  23. I know this thread isn't about this, but the subject was raised nevertheless, Wax has had a gig advertised for roughly a week now, and no sign of it. This is hip-hop discrimination! Back to subject, I agree that the gig guide should not just cater to bands and people who might watch bands (Ian, i'll elaborate more in an email to you). Obviously I championing the club scene because I am involved in that side rather than the live music scene, but the audience numbers from the likes of Kef and Snafu can easily match the numbers that attend live gigs at the Lemon Tree. If this guide is based (largely) on bands, then all we'll have is a paper version of the AUBL/Aberdeen-music.com websites.
  24. Herbaliser is this Saturday (13th) @ Kef. The Andrew Weatherall (Two Lone Swordsmen) gig is also at Kef but I can't remember the exact date (26th/27th August maybe). Give the office a ring on 01224 648000.
