  1. Need PR staff for Lo Down. All the usual characteristics apply, but here's a summary anyway: No use if you're - shy, irresponsible, untrustworthy, don't understand basic English, an alcoholic, drug addict, thieving gypsy, going to stick the flyers in a bin, and most importantly, if I don't like the cut of your jib. Immediate start desired. Going rate is 5.30 p/h but if you're really good, then we can re-negotiate (note: you must prove you're really good, I'm not taking your word for it.) We're opening on Thursday, so I'll need staff to start Thursday and preferably work 3 out 4 from Thurs to Sun. If these demands don't sound too unreasonable then you may be right for us. PM me.
  2. There's this night called Wax. I hear only good things. Maybe worth a mention? Hmm...?
  3. Cool. I'll check some of these guys out for next year. What's opinions on a People Under The Stairs/Giant Panda double bill? Plus, now's a good time to stick this in:
  4. As a condition of Lo Down opening, we've had to fork out for CCTV which will be getting fitted in the next week. Little consolation since the theft happened last night but hopefully once the council get off their arse and put some good lighting in, then the whole area should be more tink-proof!
  5. Which board did you see that on Lepeep?
  6. Brilliant! Did actually look at Daddy G a while ago, and I think Snafu did too. Wasn't too sure what response we would get. I know the Massive Attack association would sell, but wasn't sure. I might make some enquiries again.
  7. Slightly confused: I take it there wasn't a typo and you mean Daddi G of Kode9/Hyperdub association and not Daddy G of Massive Attack fame?
  8. Wax has only been going for 7 months, and already we've had the likes of DJ Q-Bert, Rob Swift, Fingathing and Prime Cuts as special guests, plus not forgetting those Freaky Menoovering cats! 2006 has in store: Ugly Duckling, DJ Format, Breakestra, Herbaliser, Mark Rae...and possibly a repeat Q-Bert show or even an Aberdeen debut for MixMaster Mike! We're looking to build our mailing list, offering in return discounted tickets to the above, drink offers at shows and an (ir)regular newsletter. Fair swap? We think so... To sign up, send a blank message to waxhiphop@gmail.com.
  9. The Rodney P show, originally scheduled for Lo Down has been moved to Snafu. Original tickets are still valid. Please note also, there is a slightly earlier opening time of 7:30pm. Full Details: Wax presents RODNEY P (BBC 1XTRA) One of the most in-demand performers on the scene, Rodney P started life as part of the London Posse. Offered a support slot by Mick Jones (The Clash) for his new band Big Audio Dynamite, the Posse ended up supporting them a second time, gaining a recording contract with Big Life Records in the process. Supporting the likes of NWA and Soul II Soul, and releasing underground classics like Money Mad, Dedication and Hows Life in London, Rodney Ps stock was rising fast. A look back on his vast discography illustrates a whos who of the cream of UK hip-hop Roots Manuva, Nextmen, Blak Twang and Skinnyman. Not to mention collaborations with the likes of Roni Size, Bjork, Nitin Sawhney and Freq. Nasty along the way too. Fast forward to the present day, Rodney, and long-time cohort Skitz, have a weekly show on the BBCs flagship digital radio station, 1Xtra. Recent single, The Nice Up was released in March this year to critical acclaim and ended up on many a DJs playlist. The single is taken from his debut album The Future and released through Lowlife Records under his own Riddim Killa label. Support from Dee J ALa Fu (Big Dada) Please be advised this is an early show (over 14s). Doors open at 7:30pm, curfew 10:30pm. WEDNESDAY 30th NOVEMBER 2005 Venue: Snafu, 1 Union Street, Aberdeen Advance tickets priced 11, on sale from One-Up, Fopp or www.seetickets.com.
  10. You know what, I've confused these guys with the Virgin Tears! I never saw both, but I read a bit about the VT's and I don't remember Butler being mentioned. Oh the public humiliation!
  11. Looks and sounds like Suede... They've even got a Bernard Butler lookalike on geetar. Is this really the Tears?
  12. Try this site: www.mixalbum.com. Make up your own party compilation, mixed by a computer, and then no one misses the party. I expect an invite for this party now...
  13. On a more informative note: Gingerbread lattes at Starbucks are this winter's must-have.
  14. Saw it last night. Previews were disrupted by a group of people who insisted in sitting in the seats that their tickets were allocated...in a half-empty cinema! Arseholes. I thought there were no seat allocation in the Vue. They weren't even that great seats.
  15. Hmmm, this does mean queues and longer waits for me, but I'm feeling generous... ...I highly recommend the Starbucks in the St Nicks Centre. Not many people know about it, so keep it between us.
  16. Actually only one regular clubnight (Manga/Jungle Nation) and those two gigs (Mani + Peter Hook) are the only externally promoted gigs booked so far. Everything else is booked and promoted in-house, or more specifically by moi. Don't like charging high ticket prices, the benefit of booking shows in-house is that unlike promoters, we don't have to make a profit from ticket sales - we've got the bar.
  17. More DJ's than live bands. But it's pretty much the case of anything of quality is very welcome. Initially we won't be kitted out with a set-up good enough for live bands, but we will be looking into that. Personally, I like Cargo in London and that's not far off what we're trying to accomplish up here.
  18. I'm not too sure of ticket prices, I just spoke to the promoter today and he says all the promotion material is scheduled to be put out at the end of the week. I think 14 sounds about right though (for Peter Hook, I'll double-check for Mani). Both gigs are 11pm til 3am (I'll have to double-check that though, they might open at 10pm). Price-wise, depends on your perception of steep. Was the Ocean Colour Scene gig at the LT not 20 a ticket, for an acoustic set? Higher costs plus full(ish) band, yes, but all depends how much you really want to see someone. Not trying to start a debate on ticket prices, just my opinion. The prices independant promoters charge for their gigs is not really my business, although too high would warrant me asking if that was wise (affects my bar sales obviously). 14 to me is reasonable enough for it to be none of my business. There is also the ex-Hacienda DJ Jon Da Silva playing on the same night.
  19. The Mani gig is an external promotion. Plus, we wouldn't be much of a business if money never came into our way of thinking...
  20. Let me be the first to point out that this is not a hip-hop club or an indie club. If you look at the variety of our nights (first post), then you'll realise that we're quite a neutral venue. Besides, did you feel safe the night Eddie Halliwell was at the Tunnels or when UrbanScot had that showcase. No difference.
  21. Well folks, it wouldn't be a nightclub opening in Aberdeen without a delay. Lo Down is now scheduled for opening mid-November. With the exception of Quantic (moved to Feb 2006), all previously-advertised gigs are going ahead as planned: Thursday 17th - PREVIEW OPENING Friday 18th - MANGA in association with JUNGLE NATION Saturday 19th - GRAND OPENING Thursday 24th - MANI (STONE ROSES - DJ Set) Wednesday 30th - RODNEY P (BBC 1XTRA) - Early Show 14+ Guests confirmed for 2006: Quantic, DJ Language (BBE) and Gilles Peterson. Visit www.lo-down.co.uk for updates and free membership.
