  1. God that makes me feel old then. Mine was the 'ra ta ta ta ta ta' of Chanson D'Amour by the inexplicable Manhattan Transfer. I seem to recall Celine Dion was number one on both my 18th and 21st birthdays...Canadian cunt that she is.

    Your current read?

Finally got round to Huxley's Brave New World after a diet of almost entirely Orwell for the past few months - good stuff.
  3. It's the age-old thing. Scotland only play well when they're underdogs. Arguably they were underdogs on Saturday against Macedonia as they'd just come back from a 4-0 humping. Burley inherited a squad who believed they were better than they were and it's only a series of wake-up call results that have got them back to playing like they did last night...a gutsy performance. Of course, the lack of a finisher (that's where McFadden could have come in useful) and the odd defensive fuck-up will always be a problem for us. Kris 'Hey, I just scored five past Hamilton' Boyd can fuck off though - if Burley does go and someone else comes in, I hope the first thing they do is tell that arse-faced clown that he won't be playing during their tenure.
  4. Magical Mystery Tour has their best songs so I voted for it too.
  5. Yeah, Slowdive were on of those bands I knew were about in the early 90s but couldn't ever get round to hearing apart from say 5 seconds here or there on the Chart Show. Nice to be able to go back and listen now. Same with the New Fads.
  6. Got really into the New Fast Automatic Daffodils and Slowdive over the last 6 months. Might have to start actively petitioning for them to reform. Nearly everyone else from back then has!
  7. Bit of a cheeky advertisement this one. We at Culturedeluxe Records will be releasing the second 7" EP from Younghusband on 28th September called 'Idiot Son'. Younghusband is fronted by Euan Hinshelwood who plays guitar with Emmy the Great and, as before, there's something of Graham Coxon / Coffee and TV about him! Been some play on BBC Radio 6 from the likes of Marc Riley and Gideon Coe. Younghusband - 'Idiot Son EP' 1. 'Younghusband Says Relax' 2. 'Black Boots' 3. 'The Prosecutor' Audio preview and pre-order links are available at our label page. Would love to hear anyone's feedback!
  8. Just couldn't get into the VMs Biz, sorry, and shame I missed Stanley (only able to make it to the Saturday) as I've always liked them when I've seen them. Rolling around in the mud were we Steven? Meant to pick up your album in One Up at the weekend (honest!) but didn't get round to it due to having to watch Scotland play some football or other. Cheers!
  9. I could be wrong, but bands on their way up tended to play shows at the Tunnels, Moshulu or Kef on their first tours. However, it's quite possible that it's more of a comment on the music scene in general and I'll openly admit I was more likely to go and see major-signed post-Franz / pre-Arctics type bands than I would be now. I dunno, it really does seem though that the list of tickets in One Up is now about half the size it was...and a good few of them are coach tickets to festivals down south!
  10. Posted my review of the shows from last Saturday last night. Feedback on my feedback welcome Culturedeluxe - Live Review - Wizard Festival 2009 - New Deer, Near Ellon, Aberdeenshire, 29th August 2009
  11. Yeah, I guess what I was trying to say, in a roundabout way, was that Aberdeen does not seem to be getting the same level of acts up here as, say, three years ago. I don't know if that's because of things happening in Dundee and Inverness, money issues locally or if bands have returned to central belt myopia. This is one of the reasons were so lucky to have IMP and others doing great work in convincing bands to come up and see us. Saves on the petrol if anything!
  12. Excellent. Shall definitely be going along to this. Should have booked the Carmelite again though!
  13. Yeah, New Rose by The Damned is generally considered the first single to be branded "punk" - in the UK at the very least. But you could probably go back to the mid-60's garage sounds of The Sonics I guess.
  14. Well, at least Stevie's put my mind at rest slightly. A mate at work today was telling me it was changing into a commercial dance venue.
  15. Not enjoyed it as much as the last one I'm afraid - not bad but a little too twee to make it through an entire album's worth! Ben's review on Culturedeluxe is pretty spot on - Culturedeluxe - Album Review - Camera Obscura - My Maudlin Career -
  16. Heh heh, no problem - I was rather impressed actually.
  17. Ahhh...I'm 14 again. Cheers Mr Amstrad.
  18. Oh dear - I've only just come to this thread now, so started at the beginning and read my way through. I have my doubts this will last into the Summer but wish them luck. It all seems a little late too - indie in "chart terms" is starting to go somewhat underground again as people count the cost of allowing shite like Scouting for Girls to exist and everyone seems to be swallowing the media-led direction that "2009 is the year of electro". Clubs usually follow pop trends don't they? So, why not introduce this four years ago? With a 500 strong capacity they really need to get hold of upcoming acts from around the UK - the very same ones who seem to be playing Dundee and Inverness now and missing out Aberdeen altogether... Either that or get some shit hot DJs who know what they're playing - hey, I'll do it! Anyone ever go to Snafu on a Sunday night a few years ago? What do you mean no!
  19. A pretty quiet Easter Sunday in Moshulu but a couple of very impressive bands I thought... "Four guys? A tousle-haired singer and a shirtless drummer? Tight angular indie rock with machine gun pose guitar? Yeah, it doesn`t take the most perceptive to realise one of their key influences are a certain bunch of feisty, frosty primates. However, truly original bands come along less often than decent Fall albums and local outfit The Marionettes have a lot more going for them than most....." Full review: Culturedeluxe - Live Review - The Bookhouse Boys / The Marionettes - Aberdeen Moshulu, 12th April 2009 All feedback very welcome indeed - hope you enjoy reading.
  20. I thought this was a rather good gig - not many folk there and they did lose everyone a bit towards the middle of the gig but stirring stuff!
  21. I just bought two tickets to both nights of this -> Culturedeluxe - News - Carter USM Announce 2009 Live Plans Living in the past? Nah.....
  22. I wouldn't even say "these days" - there was a point just after the Morning Glory LP came out that they changed forever into a plodding, boring version of themselves that seemed to only recycle "Live Forever", diluting it over and over again or rip off other acts for their singles. What was once exciting - the T-Rex lifts on Cigarettes and Alcohol, the cover of I Am The Walrus, the Coca-cola sponsored Shakermaker and the brash call to arms of Supersonic (at a time the 'indie' world was all stodgy US grunge and fiddly UK acts past their best - hello Wonderstuff and Levellers) was replaced by lazy steals - the Stevie Wonder rip off 'Step Out', the atrocious Kinks 'homage' on '...Idle' (complete with Dead End Street rip off video) and the track which started the rot - the lazy, lazy, shitty, shitty sub-Quo sounds of Roll With It. Once they'd had their magicial "first number one" it was all over...and their career had only just begun.
  23. Saw them at Murrayfield in 2000. Still the most boring gig of my life. I pleaded with mate who could drive to go through to Inverness with me to see them on the co-headline tour with Whiteout. That might have been good but even by 1997 they were boring shite. Alan McGee does something every day to destroy his legacy. Those comments are utter pish.
