    What next?

If you think about the 'would mozart and beethoven thought the same' the answer is yes they possibly did, but the change came about in the types of instruments that werent being used previously or in some cases hadn't even been discovered. Maybe technology is the key to future musical development, but then can you question, where can technology go next? Personally I find it hard to believe that with the number of things possible with merely a guitar multiplied with the number of things possible with a bass and drumkit, assuming that the players can play, there must be thousands of concepts and ideas left unturned.

    What next?

I feel that the situation now is so bleak, something more than a songwriter is required if you get my drift. The Beatles wouldn't go down now as well as they did 50 years ago. To be innovative now would require the musician to be pretty special, above the average songwriter, have a lot of creativity / ear / feel for music and in my opinion - the skill to be able to project this thought into life. Passion for music was mentioned. I totally agree with this, musicians need to be dedicated and in love with music, a lot of recent music seems uninspired and half arsed.

    What next?

havn't been any major steps since the 70s??? not so sure about that. The way I see it, in the past ten years, being good an instrument has not been a neccessity, but its coming back around. People go on about loads of bands today being experimental blah blah, all these sub genres blah blah - all does nothing for me, right now, rock music is pathetically weak. Im obviously biased but I think my band is pretty different for being just a traditional rock line up, guitar bass drums, but i wont go into that! The way forward I think is to go back to basics and learn to play instruments. Only when fully capable are people in the position to develope, what guitarists have there been as of late that have totally awe-inspiring technique (not necessarily speed) or really special 'style'? Musical ability has been forgotten about but surely it will re-surface as people make realisations such as this thread, or just decide that its really not cool to be shit at guitar any more. So i conclude that the way forward begins with instrument ability and musical education, but also I think its important to listen to lots of music, funnily enough I find the best is from back in the day

    Jazz albums

I'm just gettin into jazzy type stuff and know not muchos. so - miles davis - 'In a silent way'
  6. There is a lot of arse kissing on this site. I guess its because everyone is on a personal level (living in the same area' date=' seeing each other), but some people take it [i']too far. Crap bands often over encouraged - fair enough if its all just a bit of fun, but its not when you think people pay to see bands...

    Musical tastes

Nirvana got me into guitar playing, then got into all the grunge, mainly soundgarden, then progressing to metallica and pantera, but as the chugga-chugga riff metal got boring, got into old chilli peppers, Primus and Mrbungle, then came Vai and also stuff like funkadelic, sly and the family stone, roundabout then i got into floyd and Yes, Jeff beck. Right now I'm listening to: Miles Davis Beethoven Ted Nugent !!

'There is no such thing as good or bad when it comes to guitar tone, suitable or unsuitable would be closer but still not right' ok, so your telling me that by me saying an album I can't listen to because the guitar sound is so unlistenable is bullshit because guitar tones cannot be good or bad? merely suitable or not. Maybe I re-phrase, 'who's guitar tone do you like, in a band environment (which is obvious as rarely do you buy a cd with just a guitar playing, so no need to over-analyse) Does that make sense? Maybe I'm speaking shit, but this is just the way it looks to me.
  9. come on guys its a chicken, surely...

well, betamax makes a post explaining how guitar sounds are different when played in isolation or in a band environment. ok fair enough, bears less relevance to the topic of the thread 'who's tone do you like' as opposed to 'making a good tone!' and you find this funny? I am missing something and regret writing this post as I'm sure its so blatantly obvious...
  11. Infectious grooves / Suicidal tendencies singer 'mike...something,' is offically crap primus bassist les claypool auditioned to join metallica but was turned down by hetfield.
  12. I always try and imagine myself playing from the audience perspective - if your band is good you have nothing to worry about. saying that, my first gig i was shitting it and just stood there like a retard, its all good from the first one.

  16. Portnoy is amazing!! I like Tim Alexander from Primus, but I don't know much about drummers
  17. I'd be really quite sad if the best music venue in aberdeen closed All I heard was a scandal about a boss possibly defrauding them out of cash and someone getting fired.

I can't listen to van halens first album anymore due to eddies tone. I just think it sucks ass. '1984' on the other hand is much better. Anyone heard Nuno Bettencourt's tone on extremes 'pornografitti' - thats good distortion! I hate nu-metal pro tools crunch!

who do you think has a good / shit tone? Jeff Beck has a fantabalastic tone, especially on 'jeff becks guitar shop' Satriani, 'Surfing with the alien.' To me, this album has the shittest guitar tone from a credible player, oh yeah and the drum machine sounds gay. Bands don't really think about tone anymore, just crank up the gain and thrash!
