Old Gold
I'm looking into buying a bass guitar as my beloved rattly Westfield Jazz Bass has seen better days. Advice on a suitable replacement would be appreciated.I'm looking for something sub-£300 (although this would be slightly flexible if something significantly better could be had) and a more classic look. Old Gold
Aye, I was looking at those, although I'm a bit sceptical about the active electronics. The Vintage Modified Jaguar PJ that seems to go for around 280 looks pretty cool too. The VMs are one hell of a series of cheap instruments, although I've not tried the basses out yet. neepheid
I can only echo the Squier recommendation at this price point. You could probably pick up a G&L Tribute L-2000 second hand for about 350 quid, and they are scarily good for the money.
Stroopy121
Plus one on the used G+L recommendation. Fantastic instrumentXx

Old Gold
The G&L's a beaut, but probably a bit rich for my blood unless a real bargain grabs me.
Jaaakkkeee
I've got a vintage modified squire jazz and it's amazing. The only problem is the weight of it. It's Affa heavy. But it sounds amazing.

Often some cracking bargains there.xx
TR!ΔNGL€ T€€TH
Just over your budget, but lovely none the less:http://www.guitarguitar.co.uk/bass_guitars_detail.asp?stock=11040414260931I've tried the vintage modified Jazz bass and thought it was clunky sounding and the neck had a cheap, plastic feel to it. kevyrob
I have a 1996 korean fender squier precision. Nice sunburst one, Missing a tone knob but its a good un

The blue version of that is preeetty fucking appealing. I've not got a lot of experience with the 50s-style P-basses... do they have adequate guts? Spoonie
Knowing what I know now and playing what I've played and owning what I've owned, if I was in your situation again, there's only one thing I'd spend my money on. One of these fuckers:http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VINTAGE-1984-1987-FENDER-JAZZ-BASS-SPECIAL-made-in-Japan-All-original-/321027529219?pt=Guitar&hash=item4abebb5a03orhttp://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fender-1989-Power-Jazz-Bass-Special-Used-4-String-Electric-Bass-with-Gig-Bag-/170951006136?pt=Guitar&hash=item27cd7957b8A little bit above your price range but I got one for sub £300 so keep your eyes open,
Old Gold
Those look amazing. Unfortunately, don't think I'll have time to stake out for a bargain as I'm eager to do some decent recording/live stuff shortly into the new year. I reckon 350 is my absolute limit. And I really don't want to deal with an import at the moment.
Spoonie
That's a shame. Maybe you should be looking to borrow in the short term, and buying just the right thing. I have a US precision, a Jap '62 reissue P-bass, a Stingray, a modified Legend P-bass and one of those. I've also owned a Warwick and a heavily modded Fodic Jazz bass and I'd seriously recommend the Jazz Special.
Old Gold
Looking through ebay, there's a lot of pretty interesting Japanese basses for closer to the 200 quid mark. Are these guaranteed lemons, or likely to be any good?
Spoonie
Depends very much on the specifics. you got any examples?

Spoonie
Those Aria Pro IIs are mint. Obviously the challenge with buing on eBay is you don't get to check it out first, but you can get some beasts on there
Stroopy121
I have a power jazz special and it's the fucking MAN. Total workhorse of a bass. If you want a tryout in the short term, holla.xx
Spoonie
I'd love a Power. Almost bought on a couple of years back, but I don't play the basses I have so it felt like a bit of a waste of cash!

Spoonie
Two of my basses lie at a friends house in their cases. I haven't seen either in three years!
neepheid
The G&L's a beaut, but probably a bit rich for my blood unless a real bargain grabs me.Well, it's your call. I have one so you're welcome to try it. You also ask about basses having "adequate guts". I'm sure a 50s style P bass would have plenty guts. The L-2000 on the other hand, has guts, balls and a hell of a right hook.I seem to recall you expressing doubt about active electronics but another potential one to buy new that comes to mind is the new Sterling (Music Man) SUB basses - in budget: http://www.soundslive.co.uk/product~name~Sterling-Ray4-SUB-Bass-Black-Gloss~ID~17574.aspAgain, if you look second hand then you could pick up a Music Man SUB (the first, American made series) for about £350. They are excellent basses also.Maybe I'll shut up now, I don't know if I'm helping or hindering here
Old Gold
Buying guitars is so much easier. Bass costs are all over the fucking place. You're all being a massive help. I'm just being a proper second-instrument wanker.
