Diesel
I'm currently 2/3's through "Crime" and it's not bad thus far.
DJ Jo-D
First introduced to him by my Pop who read Trainspotting and recommended to me (prior to the film), loved it, dark, gritty and altho fictional, you can totally imagine this type of thing happening in Scotland. I've just finished 'Bedroom secrets' altho funny and funked up, not as good as Trainspotting/Porno in my eyes.Tried to read Glue, but just couldn't get into it properly (think it's cause I had a massive copy!)Saw Marabou Stork Nightmares in the Theatre and it was ace everyone in tears laughing, then wham hits you with the disturbing gang bit...the whole theatre just silence - nae nice scene, but again these things happen, so why not have your eyes open to it?Still to read If you love... and Crime...might go look for that now! mistersticks
i think trainspotting is amazing, i did a study on it, and after i read it i went out and bought a bunch of his books, they're all quite similar though, i enjoyed the acid house and marabou stork nightmares the best after trainspotting. Spoonie
went on a bit of a binge last year and read trainspotting, porno, filth, marabou stork nightmares and the acid house. i don't make a big deal out of books, they either entertain me or they don't and these ones did. filth is absolutely brutal. will have to get through the others at some stage too. Bigsby
Heads up for Irvine Welsh fans, he's made a "mockumentary" set in the world of darts, and it's on ITV 4 this Saturday at 11pm.I always look forward to new IW material, although his last TV show "Wedding Belles" was fairly disappointing IMO. incredibledisc
Anyone read Skagboys yet? I'm about 100 pages in and enjoying it so far. I'm not normally a fan of prequel stories but I have to admit it's fun being immersed back in the world of Renton, Sick Boy, Spud, Begbie and co. Lemonade
I haven't looked at Skagboys yet. I definitely will though. I read everything up to Porno back in the early 2000s, but I sort of lost interest after that. I read Reheated Cabbage but I thought it was pretty balls. incredibledisc
Pretty much the same here - he sort of turned into a parody of himself for a few years. Apparently a lot of this new one is based on stuff he had left over when he wrote Trainspotting so ironically it feels "fresher" than most of his recent stuff. Jaaakkkeee
It's really good. GOt a really good ending too. Well worth the read.
Spoonie
Agreed. I do agree too that it's almost comforting being back in the world he's created with those characters.
Jaaakkkeee
I found that Crime was a little too hollywood. I know it was set in America but it didn't have the grittyness he's best at. It was like the shocking bits were just there to shock and if it was a person it would be like a rich girl pretending to slum it.
Bigsby
Skagboys was good but I love all his stuff.
threeornothing
Been revisiting Welsh recently, well Trainspotting, Porno and Acid House...all courtesy of MCCABE. All excellent, especially porno, sick as fuck in places.....bloody marvelousNo time for reading but the audio books are excellent (save Trainspotting which is ruined by passages from Welsh himself....disappointing!!) Tam Dean Burn nails them so good though....Really want to get skagboys but at £26 on audible it will have to wait....dubious about a prequel aswell as porno feels too much like a sequel for seqeuls sake, and essentially same story in the end.....seems unlikely they will ever make a film out of porno but what about skagboys? Jaaakkkeee
Porno is like, the worst one! haha.
Johnny Mac
Finally got round to reading Crime (started it years ago). A pretty enjoyable read, especially with all the references to FIlth throughout. Has he got anything new in the works?
