Stripey
The "price" of music is an artificial thing anyway which is fixed by the market, when you buy that radiohead cd or whatever, you are paying primarily for packaging and marketing. Apples biggest coup is actually managing to persuade people to *pay* to download music, when they can get it for free elsewhere, it absolutely cracks me up to think of all the ipod wielding masses wasting their money on mp3s which have no inherent value. Who decided an mp3 should cost 1 quid? Are they suggesting a 12 track album on CD, for example, costs 15 quid because thats the inherent value of the music + 3 quid for packaging? I think you will find that isn't the case when you look at how that 15 quid breaks down. If you buy music from itunes, you are being ripped off either way. Pirating music should be encouraged, because it hurts the people who release bands like westlife and james blunt - who can dissaprove of that? Elizabeth
If anything, sharing and downloading music HELPS smaller bands.I know if I hadn't gotten an album from my friend and ripped it to my computer I probably wouldn't have gotten into that band which means I wouldn't be encouraged to actually buy some of their stuff....and yeah. How much money, from CD sales goes to the label and then the actual band themselves? Cloud
How much money, from CD sales goes to the label and then the actual band themselves?A pathetic amount, I can't remeber the actual numbers, but I'm sure it's as little as 10-15%.Steve Albini wrote something on it that I'm sure has been referenced a few times on here, I can't remeber what it was called, but I'm sure someone will find it.Stripey's bang on the money by saying that Apple's biggest coup was to convince people to pay for MP3's. Guest DustyDeviada
Surely it's not worth worrying about the law anyway, you're never going to be prosecuted for ripping a CD to your iPod, and I would say the odds on you ever being done for downloading anything other than kiddie porn are fairly slim. Elizabeth
To be fair, being a 15-year-old girl, I probably wouldn't even be done for the kiddy porn.
Bowl O' Alpen
I find it pretty hard to believe that Apple would be able to release and distribute iTunes with a 'Rip Music' function if it was illegal to do that... That's like saying 'Oh Windows has a new thing, press F12 eight times and your computer can see in the dark' and then not letting you it out. OK maybe not the best example but you get the point...p.s. This is not a real trick for Windows. At least I don't think it is...

Sue Denim..
I think all music should be free. If you're any good, we'd all buy a T-shirt, go to the gigs and make your band rich.
