  1. I like it, but then I was never not going to like it. No unnecessary soloing, no pissing about, a greater sense of urgency prevails
  2. There's only one woman in the history of pop for me: Sandie Shaw. She could trample all over my face in her dusty bare feet (in her 60s form, not at the age of 60)
  3. That Channel 5 programme on the moon landing was pretty darn convincing, and I was convinced for a while. But i don't think Buzz Aldrin is a good enough actor to fool us all
  4. When I saw you posting on this thread, I thought it was going to be "Jim Morrison and Richey Edwards are working in a chip shop in Hammersmith"
  5. I don't think I will stop being a "smart-arse twat", so here is my list of favourite sub-divisions of the broader song format: Ode: John Keats "Ode to Melancholy" Folk Ballad: Bonny Udny (unknown author), although A Man's a Man For A' That is the greatest of the Scottish traditional songs Canticle: ironically, my choice for this was released as a pop record! Scarborough Fair by Simon & Garfunkel Sonnet: the aforementioned NO.65 by Shakespeare
  6. I think the music video is the only hope for the pop single, the best chance new releases have for exposure, considering the falling-off in interest in radio and the charts
  7. I'll presume we're talking pop songs here, so I'll say it's a toss-up between Song to the Siren by Tim Buckley, and Ceremony by New Order
  8. My search for a ticket continues.....
  9. Israel is an album track at best, it should never have been a single. And you should list the song titles first, because it is not the artists you are appreciating with the single, as you needn't like the artist to like the single, as I said earlier.
  10. Shakespeare's sonnet NO.65 PLEASE specify pop song, Mr.empty-words
  11. Maximo Park and The Duke Spirit. I just can't resist any longer! My quest for a ticket starts here.....
  12. I would recommend going to going to Bon Accord Baths, not to swim but to admire the building, a fine example of the beautiful ideal of the International Style, a perfect choice of style for the beautiful ideal of the public bath
  13. I've said it once and I'll say it again: no-one whistles albums. Singles make the world go round: you don't have to pay money, you can listen to them on the radio, in the cafes and in the clubs, and they can define a summer or even a generation, or they can be your soundtrack to a week, and forgotten after that. You don't have to buy into a particular artist to be seduced by 3 minutes of their work. The important bands in history are those whose singles will be remembered rather than their albums: Elvis Pressley, The Kinks, The Jam, Marc Bolan, Blondie, Prince.....Bands who don't release singles should be ignored, and it is a just world that won't remember them (bar Led Zeppelin). So in response to the Top 10 albums thread, let's have your top 10 singles since the advent of pop music. Your choices should mean something to a wider demographic than yourself. In order: 1, Ceremony - New Order 2, The Fly - U2 3, Totally Wired - The Fall 4, The Sweetest Girl - Scritti Politti 5, Transmission - Joy Division 6, Heart of Glass - Blondie 7, Shipbuilding - Robert Wyatt 8, Volunteers - Jefferson Airplane 9, Milkman of Human Kindness - Billy Bragg 10, Substitute - The Who
  14. Narc's read the one about Castel Di Sangro, he recommends it. I don't think they made it to Serie A, did they? I don't remember them
  15. To be fair, Welsh said that the extract was incidental to the plot. Indeed, I reckon he put it in to have something to churn out at pointless readings like this. To start off with, I was thinking I was above this kind of humour, but my resistance faded and I ended being bent double with laughter: "I've no lubrication for this, you're going to have to spit on it"
  16. Damn you, I was just about to say that! Bannockburn is also featured, as, Fluffy, Robert the Bruce features in the film. This war may not have name, as the historians after the event would seek to play it down, but let it henceforth be known as the First Great Scottish War of Independence
  17. I do hope this winds up before 12, because the 5 door tax and the prices on the bar mean that it is essential to get to Exodus in time for free entry
  18. Sequelization, haha, "Ancient Mariner II: The Albatross Strikes Back". I got my account deleted, but decided I wanted to return, so I thought I better keep some continuity with my username. Thanks in advance for the playing of a few of the above tracks. There may be liquid rewards if you make The Last Big Weekend before the exams a memorable one, as I'm sure you will.
