  1. Sigur Ros, Laeto, Mogwai, GSY!BE, Explosions in the Sky, Picastro, Pelican etc. all make popular music. Popular music is meant for dancing, that's why it is made with a rhythm section, and it shouldn't aspire to having the depth of classical music, because it can't. Just because you can dance to a band doesn't make them good, but they are at least fufilling the 1st function of pop. I don't know what reaction you are supposed to have to post-rock when you hear it. I'd say you don't know either, Ollie, and that's why you were nodding your head to the drums when Picastro played, to try and connect with it in some way
  2. It's good that we've finally got a striker, but neither Lovell nor the Pole are the "big guy" that Calderwood likes so much, are they? I cannae mind, Lovell may be tall, but he's not going to cope with Marvin Andrews etc. if Jimmy insists on playing the high ball and crosses game. I hope he ditches this tactic
  3. I'm not so naive that I don't notice that most modern pop movements are highly artificial in that they result from NME (mainly) endorsing certain bands. But trends are necessary because it is more exciting to follow and feel part of a movement, rather than simply buying the albums of individual bands
  4. The NME decides who to break, because they know what's best for us. It's because they proclaim a movement that bands get signed, not the other way round. If any record company were to try and curry their favour, then it would be the record label that Keane are on, yet NME has mocked them from the start
  5. I don't know about Emo, but it's making pop by modern means, and this alone is a statement. I agree this isn't enough unless they also advance song styles, structures etc. I believe they do this. "Syntax" jerks around and goes off at tangents (perhaps reflecting the role of syntax in language, i.e the derivation of meaning from several components? Maybe I'm giving Mart too much credit), while "Gone" goes the other way in having a continuous groove, with the quickening of the drums marking out the chorus in a moment of brilliant simplicity
  6. Are those "trendy" jeans the Easy Fit ones from Gap? I was looking at them today. They will be rejected if they are not at least as AS tight as Neil Ex's
  7. Hmmm, I thought I had a proud tradition of never having seen a metal band, but I saw Oceansize supporting Cooper Temple Clause (I'm not proud of it). Are they considered metal now?
  8. I bet cinnamon isn't used in Indian cooking, and I bet no one dresses like that in India, and I bet that's just make-up on his face
  9. To try and relive the best moments of T In The Park, today I bought Decent days and Nights/Banque - The Futureheads Blood/Heads in Bags - Editors Refugees/Southern Rain - The Tears C'mere/Public Pervert remix/Fog v.s Mould for the Length of Love - Interpol Graffiti(demo)/Stray Talk/Apply Some Pressure (demo, and the greatest 3 mins 27 secs in the history of pop) - Maximo Park Goodnight, Goodnight/When We Were Kids (demo) - Hot Hot Heat (I bought this without hearing it, and am extrememly regretful) That's 14 tracks for about 12.50, so an albums worth of songs for the price of an album, but by many different bands. I will never buy an album again
  10. As I've told Shaun, colonopenbracket are the future, they are the best, they are great. It's not just the tunes I care for, but their ideas and the whole concept. Their name, their format, and their planned end to gigs (I won't spoil it for anyone who doesn't already know) are Pop-Art genius, exactly what this game should be about. I had wanted them to be our "running mates", but I fear they may go stratospheric before us
  11. Scissor Sisters maybe a cartoon band, but they are a thousand times more worthy than Sigur Ros. I guarantee every one who buys into Sigur Ros' whole "beautiful" thing will one day feel like an idiot for having done so
  12. I lasted about 30 seconds of The Black Velvets. That's all it took to convince me they were 80s poodle rockers a la Guns N' Roses, and definitely not cool
  13. Top 5 tracks of weekend: Apply Some Pressure - Maximo Park Glass Danse - The Faint Bullets - Editors Refugees - The Tears (warranted a "Yass Min!!" for this alone) that one by Rilo Kiley Top 5 acts: Editors The Faint Sons & Daughters The Futureheads Interpol
  14. I was sitting about 20 yards away from one of the speakers, and I still managed to fall asleep. This was more to do with the sun on my face rather than their performance, altho they shouldn't be playing any gigs that are not situated in a pub
