  1. Yeah we supported them in drakes in october. I thought they were fairly tight and solid but they didn't really have the tunes. they were all really nice guys but the front man was ugly as sin and trying to get on like he was a mix of liam gallagher and boby gillespie - he was fairly arrogant, one of these frontmen who tries to be a rock n' roll star before he's actually made it. they were signed to beggar's, and they also had a fuckin decent live review in the NME recently as well - they played the Barfly in Glasgow supporting Soulwax on MTV2's 'Gonzo On Tour'. but i wasn't overly impressed. Mike
  2. in terms of cymbals, i spent a long time wondering what to buy....after nearly buying both Zildjian ZXT's and the notorious pro sonix, i asked some professional advice and ending up getting paiste 802's (14" hi hats, 16" crash and 20"ride) for 209 off the web, they were meant to be 300. Absolutely superb, actually sound better than some expensive Zildjian Z customs I've played and a few sabian numbers too. Just about to buy the 18" crash for 100, can't wait to stop borrowing cymbals at captain toms for a pound a shot. and planet Z are fucking awful, as are sabian solars, the first cymbals i bought. so bad i've never even tried the hi-hats. Mike
  3. Hopefully no-ones asked this one yet - but what's your candidates for single of the year? Mine is easily take me out by franz. and before some sad bastard accuses me of being a sellout - its got nothing to do with the fact it was successful - i thought it was an awesome song from the very first time i heard it. so lets have it then?! mike
  4. hey Fuck knows how I know things like this but here goes.....Colin Hay was the lead singer from men at work - as far as i know he's a scotsman, but he emigrated to Oz, where he formed the band. he went solo for a bit in the 90's and had several largely forgettable records, and of course, he and his band are best known for their classic 1985 hit 'down under', no doubt a tribute to his second homeland. men at work definitely reformed about 3 years ago, whether or not they're still together, i'm not sure at all. they're probably trailing around on the butlins circuit somewhere, and if not, you can be sure they'll appear in aberdeen at one of those 80's reunited tours sometime in the future. (usually visits music hall or lemon tree) hope that helped Mike
  5. its gotta be exodus man. friday nights are awesome in there (always thought saturdays were pretty weak). i like the way that it doesnt let the fact its part of a chain dictate its music tastes and the music is fairly different each night of the week. definitely better on the weekend though. as for moshulu, i've been a few times but prefer exodus, because moshulu seems to be full of - as opposed to trendy people - annoying bastards trying to outdo each other in terms of ridiculous dress sense. for example i saw a cunt wearing a nazi uniform in there one night - and no, it wasn't a fancy dress, just some bellend trying to be controversial. exodus rules. Mike
  6. i saw Wilt at the witnness (now oxegen) festival in dublin in 2002. i'd seen the video for 'take me home' on mtv2 so thought it was worth going to see then. They were fucking awesome! got the crowd going something else, and got quite a good turn out too. Kerbdog were quality as well but both wilt's albums (bastinado and my medicine) are pretty damn good. download a single called 'distortion' if you can. can't wait for the return of kerbdog. jonty
  7. Yeah Dire Straits are immense. Money for nothing is one of the best riffs of all time - and that drum intro is seriously good. most of brothers in arms is still amazing - although I agree walk of life sounds well cheesy these days - but hey - cheese is good! but the spoils must surely go to sultans of swing - try listening to that at 4am and you'll discover a whole new side to it. Jonty
  8. wow, biffy playing the music hall in february as part of a UK tour of bigger venues. quality. check nme.com for details. bout fuckin time jonty
  9. fuckin hell thats outrageous. u shud try and claim for that. i agree the priory is fucking shit - last time i was in there it was scotland v holland and scotland got beaten 5-0. place was full of agressive neds staring at each other. the downstairs bit used to be alright when they opened it, played rock/alternative some nights but as far as i know its just 'yeah' by usher upstairs 24/7. god usher sucks
  10. Its a fuckin stupid idea. People are just gonna buy loads of booze and get fuckfaced at home before going straight to the club, which will just mean that the bars do bad business. Yet again the government comes up with a shit solution to a minor problem. lets be honest - the only reason binge drinking is a problem is when idiots go out and vandalise shit and start fights. most of us are only out for a good nite. jonty
  11. I just gotta say I think that the music scene in Aberdeen is fucking ace. I've been here a year and a half now and it continues to surprise me just how many different, talented new bands there are on the scene, and how many hard working, established bands there are about as well. Where I'm from (Belfast) the music scene is fairly mediocre and its hard as fuck to get a gig at all - in some instances you even need to pay to play. But its amazing that there are four or five specific venues for new bands to play in, and they all seem to get fairly good audiences as well. I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks that it's only a matter of time before a band from Aberdeen make it seriously big. Jonty
