  1. Bedroom Bowling! I'm intriuged, but have a nagging feeling that I don't really want to know.
  2. Come on Chilli, you'll love it - spirit of '77 - you can spit on me down the front if you want.
  3. It's not that soon, but AKA The Fox are playing at The Lemon Tree withThe Wild Cards and Real Shocks on Friday the 6th of August. Entry 5 / 3.25, box office 01224 642230. Doors 9pm, 1st Act 9.30pm.
  4. AKA The Fox: The Wildcards: Real Shocks Friday 06 August 2004 Tickets 5 (3.25 concessions & regulars) Box Office: 01224 642230. Doors Open: 9pm Show Starts: 9.30pm Recent Radio 1 Session in Scotland Demo Derby winners AKA The Fox were formed in the early part of 2004. Although the five members met in Aberdeen through a passion for clubbing, they also shared a common interest in all things rock'n'roll! Consequently the sound of the band fuses the beats and bass-lines of dance music with punky guitars, live saxophone and dirty vocals. The band are on a roll at the moment having won a Cafe Drummonds Battle of the Bands, supported Dogs Die in Hot Cars at The Lemon Tree in May, and been described by Radio 1's Vic Galloway as his favourite act at this year's Go North festival.
  5. Dean Owens plus Ian Simpson & Scott Lyon + Zara Hobin Thursday 24th June at The Lemon Tree Doors Open 9pm/Support 9.30pm 7.50 (5 concessions and Regulars) Box Office: 01224 642230 After the 'bare bones' approach of his debut solo album The Droma Tapes, Dean Owens decided that with his new record My Town he wanted to make a far more lush, rich sounding record. Drawing on a pool of fantastic musicians from as far afield as Nashville and Cape Breton, hes done just that with his longtime collaborator Kevin McGuire featuring strongly on double bass and guitar throughout. Dean is well established as one of the country's finest songwriters, thanks to his work fronting Edinburgh country-roots rockers the Felsons, and a wide range of prestigious special guest slots including a major tour with Capercaillie last year. Capercaillie fans know world-class singing when they hear it, and that's what Dean Owens delivers...focusing on his solo work showcased here, the better for us to appreciate his tremendous, achingly emotive vocal range together with the tautly-fashioned architecture of his Americana-steeped songs" Sunday Herald www.deanowens.com
  6. Check out the pictures of rock gods Spinal Pap from their triumphant gig with No Quarter at The Lemon Tree on Friday the 18th of June. Pap Pics I would like to go on record as saying that they are the most photgenic group I have ever worked with.
  7. Radio Skool 07: Keb Darge/ Lotek Hi-Fi Saturday 19 June 2004 - Caf Tickets 10.00 (6.75 concessions & regulars) Doors Open: 10.00pm Show Starts: 10.00pm Just before we take a small break for summer, Radio Skool presents its 7th instalment. Bringing you a first performance in the city for Lotek Hi-Fi and a long overdue return for a local (well sort of, he's from Elgin) legend Keb Darge. This show will also feature the regular Radio Skoolers Dee J A'la Fu, Corallo and Isho and will be hosted by the production supreme behind Lotek Hi-Fi, Wayne Lotek. Lotek Hi-Fi- Brainchild of Wayne "Lotek" Bennett, the ultimate studio nut. He trained and began working at Rollover in London, where he quickly found himself working in sessions by everyone from Leftfield to Peter Andre! He came to the attention of Roots Manuva, who asked him to contribute a couple of tracks to what would become his debut album, "Brand New Second Hand". At this point Mr Lo Tek was ready to step out on his own and began piecing together the band which would become Lotek HiFi. Comprising of himself, Wayne Paul, Earl J & Aurelius and described as the freshest and most innovative groups in the UK, here's your chance to catch a collective on the rise..... Keb Darge- If you like funk music and you've never heard of Keb well it's time for a real skoolin'. He's one of the worlds leading authorities on Northern Soul and "Deep Funk" music, in fact he even coined the term. He's been on the circuit for over quarter of a century and it would take you even longer to go through his infamous record collection. From his wealth of knowledge on rare funk 45's he's worked with a host of famous collaborators including DJ Shadow, Pete Rock, DJ Spinna, Kenny Dope and more to compile funk compilations for the "bbe" label as well as his own "Deep Funk" label. A deep and downright funky set is guaranteed by the man so get your talc out and your dancing shoes on...

    New Gigs

Yeah Toots and the Maytals will be a cracker, Kathryn Williams this Tuesday looks really good too. Regulars newsletter coming next week and that's a promise. New brochure will be out late next week too, with new gigs - some yet to be confirmed - from Bert Jansch, Clinic (tbc), My Morning Jacket (tbc), Van Hielan, Jah Wooble and more.
  10. That'll be "made up bands" as opposed to....? Ones that occur naturally as part of the ecosystem or what? Ones that are a result of immaculate conception? For what it's worth Millenium Child is actually an MC / rapper, seemed to actually exist when I saw him, but who knows, maybe he's just been made up. Tina, you should definately try to catch The Real Shocks if you can, only heard them on the radio, but it was ace, still can't get over the song title Hillman Pimp. When is that gig?
  11. AKA The Fox are playing again at The Lemon Tree on Sunday the 13th of June as part of a Battle of the Bands: The Void Turning Thirteen AKA The Fox Dedalus Sunday 13th June The Lemon Tree Doors 8pm | 1st Act 8.30pm Tickets 5 Box Office: 01224 642230 can't disagree about Gisli.

  13. Statement by John Loveday Chair of The Lemon Tree Board There can't be many people interested in The Lemon Tree that didn't follow the press reports covering the recent financial results. As the newly appointed Chair of "The Lemon Tree Aberdeen Ltd. Board", I thought it would be worthwhile bringing you up to date with the current situation. The Lemon Tree was previously run as a Trust by a group of appointed Trustees from Aberdeen City Council. The day-to-day running of the venue was managed by The Lemon Tree's Director and General Manager. _ New Lemon Tree In April 2004, a new company was established, The Lemon Tree Aberdeen Ltd. This followed advice from various parties, not least the Scottish Arts Council, our second biggest funder. It is hoped this move will allow The Lemon Tree to move into unexplored areas which will help attract funding from previously untapped resources. The new Board of Directors comprises five councillors, appointed by Aberdeen City Council, and a number of individuals who care passionately about the arts and The Lemon Tree in particular. When the new company was set up, it was believed that there were no debts being transferred from the previous Trust organisation. As we now know, this was not the case. It became apparent that The Lemon Tree's accounts for the past year showed a loss and that other significant problems needed to be addressed promptly. The Board felt that a re-organisation of the management structure was the only way forward. As part of this exercise, the Director's position, as the highest paid employee, would become redundant. An overall review of the structure is currently being carried out. To clarify The Lemon Tree's status we are a Limited Company with Charitable Status, as defined and granted by the Inland Revenue. In other words we don't make a profit but we trade with sufficient funds to pay our way. _ Arts provision It is essential that our arts provision is secure and a new post will be introduced to cover this requirement soon. Clearly this will not be the role previously covered by the Director and will have different and fewer responsibilities. In the meantime, management and staff at The Lemon Tree will continue to bring you the high standards of music, drama, dance and development that you've come to expect from the venue. I would welcome any feedback you may have, so feel free to post your comments on this Forum For now, from all of us at The Lemon Tree, we look forward to seeing you soon.
