  1. here's the full biog si-cut.db (live) aka Douglas Benford has had so many guises in the past, not to mention side projects and collaborations, that you might be forgiven for being more familiar with his label and music night SPRAWL. Douglas did a lot of experimenting in the 80s with pop and ambient music, moving into more full-on instrumental dance music in the late 80s, with the whole "acid house" revolution. He released a load of 12"s under the SIDECUT>>DB moniker, working with artists such as St Etienne's Sarah Cracknell, Momus and Scanner. Gradually this metamorphosed into si-{cut}.db, in the kind of 'intelligent electronica' guise. Asked if he has a 'musical vision' as such, Douglas seems again to suggest a strong unwillingness to compromise. "Although it is difficult to know whether what one produces will stand the test of time, I don't really care about that, I just do it for myself at the time. I always start with the question 'what do I want to hear?' rather than what should I play to please other people...I make music that I would want to go out and buy". His music reflects his interests in dub/sound processing, but still rooted in melody and rhythm. " A lot of the sounds were fragments of the sound of wood splintered and broken, although they are integrated to such a degree that you can't really tell what they are." He's keen to move the sound on further, whether on his own, or through collaborations, which help him 'think and work differently': Again testimony to his disciplined work ethic is the number of international gigs he's done recently, playing new material out live in the US, France, Germany, Australia and Spain. Not surprisingly, his music seems to have accrued a rather cosmopolitan flavour: "in the US I am presumed to be Canadian, in France I was asked if I was German. So it's good not to be associated with English music!' With that in mind, it's not surprising that Douglas's idea of a compliment is to be told that he sounds like 'Jan Jelenik on a good day', which someone bestowed on him in Glasgow. But with increasing attention being paid to him in the music press over in the UK, with accolades from the likes of Time Out and The Wire, he may not be able to abstain from giving his music a nationality for very much longer. ://home.earthlink.net/~efrans/benford/ Phillipe Petite (DJ set) Philippe has chosen to use his e-mail address, ip@bip-hop.com, as his "live" alias to keep it easy, and avoid pretentiousness too often encountered among DJ circles. According to him a DJ is not only an instrument for dancing but as a living musical library he should also take his audience to a new cultural trip/discovery. Philippe wants to entertain listeners and to open new "doors of perception", to create a virtual world to enable them to forget about their own existence for a short while. Philippe tries to tell us a story, with a beginning and an end. The content of the mix is obviously of critical importance, but the DJ's technique should never overflow its creative aspect (inspiration); however, it must bring the live touch to the fluid sequence music to give birth in the end, to a unique and truly lively performance. DJ ip@bip-hop.com is specialized in mixing electronica, ambientism, avant hip-hop, dubby and minimal-techno in a plunderphonic way, essential part of different songs all mixed together to keep the rhythm alive. Using 2CD players + a laptop to add sci-fi, prepared guitar chords, various clicks and electro acoustic or field recordings in the background forming a tapestry of sound, running up to 6 different sources altogether to create a mess of asymetrical electrode. Topping it all he surfs through the waves of his mobile radio player ,improvising through radio frequencies, noises. With many levels going on at once, it's a great depth that he creates. Phillipe has been preparing a set using only music from all girl bands, very electro, rock but rhythmic and dance-floor, guaranteed to make girls scream.... there will be dancing! bip-hop.com
  2. Aye they are & a few of us remember seeing the very ledgendary Sour Grapes play live @ The Arts Centre

  11. Alan, U are very perceptive & correct, Puerto Muerto are a very special & different band from what audiences normally see in Aberdeen. We were warned Thomas Truax's live shows were very good, but not as extraordinary as it turned out. At least this time we have band we know are a live spectical & everyone with an open mind & some spare cash should attend........... Believe the hype
  12. Mon 17th May 04 Dr Drakes Doors 8pm 1st 8.30pm Door tax 5 Purto Muerto Fucked-up alt.country, which cuts Kurt Weill with Tom Waits and the Handsome Family, mixing mazurkas with sea shanties, polskas with noir-ish, cinematic sweeps and Spanish folk with post punky fury as it goes. As a live act they are Marvelous, Mad, Mordacious & ooze with sexual tension. Desc Formerly known as Khaya, who recorded three albums records and recorded two sessions for John Peel. Out of theses ashes, Desc have formed & are inspired by many things but to put their songs into context they have been said to sound like an acoustic Sonic Youth or Ennio Morricone on speed.

uk pricef or the box set is set @ 19.99, incl a 36 page info book
  14. Its the Public versus the Private sector argument all over again. If its public & seen worthwhile in in areas where decisions are made, then funding will be made ie Scottish Opera another 5m subsidy, but WHY should a minority art form with a generally privledged audience get public funding yet again, when their audience have the capabilty of sticking their hands in their bulging wallets? Aberdeen I believe is not meeting its artistic quota (monetary) in comparison to the Central Belt, so funding the variance in the LT is very welcome, providing it meets its commitment to be eclectic & subsidise minority events. So good luck to resolving the blight & hope things become settled & bubbly again soon. The private music venues in Aberdeen should be applauded for what they are doing especially those owners who bring artists to the city when normally make their usual stop off points Glasgow & Edinburgh. I believe even the much maligned Dundee sees arts as a way of bringing better quality academia to their fair city. Perhaps the way forward is NETWORKING like minded venues in all four cities & therefore reducing possible costs & increasing quality at the same time? two hats Mike

  18. its tonight get on your bicycles & get on down to Dr Drakes Doors 8pm Electric Tibet on 8.15pm SHARP Kasule Are from Albion Rovers country & are Interesting Music's most favourite NEW find, Their sound is diverse, melodic & challenging & fits the mood. To generalise their sound can be best related to Joy Division big chords; Ulrich Schnauss Slowdive, Elbow guitars; slow-faster-harder-louder type Spaceman 3, Mogwai; however this is only reference points to their unique sound. Their 1st LP Demonstaration, contains many moments of utter sublimeness. Kasule also wrote the soundtrack for an award winning film Black Coffee, which was voted most popular feature film @ The Australian AUSFEST 2002. Kasule's 2nd LP called VHOR is out in May & they will feature quite a few tracks from it as well as some of our old favs. This is kasule's 1st visit to Aberdeen & we hope it isn't their last...... Frog Pocket Is a rising star on the Benbecula & Planet Mu labels. His live shows are a fantastic spectical as witnessed at last years Unknown Pleasures, where he literally wiped the floor. He is a man who looks like he should be fronting some lo-fi guitar band playing a mixture of insane gabba and folk reels. The best thing is that the Chris Morris rave works incredibly well with the live sound of Frog Pocket's violin. Even at his most extreme he still allows the listener to make out traditional folk melodies beneath the scree. If there was ever to be a Noughties remake of 'Restless Natives', Frog pocket would be the man to record the soundtrack. He often swings wildly from the ridiculous and berserk to the sublimely beautiful in the space of one song, The man is accessible & challenging, he will be 100% dynamite at Drakes. Chevron Hails from Blackpool & is a recent Plant Mu signing & his "in your face" live shows are earning him a great reputation. Here is a review of his last single; "Devastating goodness from Lancashires Chevron on the Mu, Swimming Lessons on the A-side unleashes chopped-up stuttering chords and IDM templates offset by a harrowing dubcore echo of reflectve vocalising pressured deep into a squashed beat mix. Killer. I Remember on the flip taps into the hardcore juice awesome destroyed production and metallic twists lock into oldskool vibes reduced into something altogether new. Mighty mighty stuff". His 1st LP is out later this year & is keenly awaited. Electric Tibet Are one of Aberdeen's most innovative four piece bands; influences range from Eric Satie to Sonic Youth & lots in between. Their live shows can be full-on in your face wallofsound, or a very much improvised slow sets with lots of space, like the magnificent show they performed with & supporting The Microphones last year. Tonight they will be....................... "To comfort the afflicted & afflict the comfortable" Their clothes are faded but their souls are black - Electric Tibet
