  12. Interesting Music announce an evening of the very best in local, national & international singer songwriters Dr Drakes Friday 4th June 2004 Doors 8pm Door Tax 5 Now read on for details:- Andy White is a poet and powerbook-toting troubadour. He grew up in Belfast, surrounded by Irish beauty and terrorist violence. His father is a political writer and his grandmother was a piano player. Music and lyricism run in the family. boy 40 is Andy White's 12th international release. boy 40 begins with Andy 'going solo' with his guitar and ends with him and an orchestra, trying to see God. From his very first album Rave on Andy White, Andy was always going to be trouble. The title was a reference to a W.B. Yeats poem or a Van Morrison song take your pick. The song Religious Persuasion was a slap in the face for those who connect religion with violence. Melody Maker's album review proclaimed "Yer man's a genius" and Andy White had arrived. In his own words: "I grew up hearing folk music dividing people into one side or the other. I wanted to write a new folk music for my country. Uniting our traditions with the rock music we loved and the new political future we hoped for. I started off writing poems and then picked up an acoustic guitar when I heard John Lennon sing 'Give Peace A Chance'. Put them both together, that's all." boy 40 touches the heart of our time for those of us facing middle youth in a world where it is hard to feel fully grown. Andy White is a coherent voice in the midst of all the generation txt confusion. From the innocence of the young Belfast boy watching the parades in The Twelfth Of July, all the way through to the experience of the man considering the western world's very own war on terrorism in The Fortune Teller's Right and Everything You've Got. It is an album about war and peace, about looking for a new home in the sun and searching for spiritual enlightenment.boy 40 was written in London and Melbourne, Andy's new home. For the first time since on his earliest recordings, Andy played all the instruments. As a result, there is an offbeat and spontaneous vibe to the proceedings. The album was engineered and co-produced by Australian Simon Polinski (The Church, ALT) with two tracks co-produced by the Scotsman behind Narcotic Thrust, Stuart Crichton. There is an element of surprise and a groovy quality to the recordings that stems from an entirely laid back approach to the process itself (a.k.a. the Melbourne effect). boy 40 - the advantage of being older and wiser is that you can do and say what you want in the full knowledge that you can handle the consequences. The advantage of being a grown up is that you have the option of behaving like a child. Seize the moment, light the incense and experience the innocence. It's cool to care. Major Matt Mason (USA) was born and raised in Kansas. He spent his formative years studying creative writing and shredding his electric guitar in various post-punk, math-rock, noise combos (see Dracomagnet and Magic Nose) that serviced the rather dynamic underground in the small college town of Lawrence. After moving to New York in the summer of "93 and landing a job at Tower Record for five dollars an hour, Major Matt sold his amp for food and began composing on a thirty dollar acoustic guitar that thankfully would not stay in tun. Recording on a cheap boom box, he found the acoustics in his Lower East Side closet ideal for creating a sort of intimate sound which would perfectly suit his newly inspired urban-folk songs, as well as his finances. With guitar in hand and hay still in his hair Major Matt hit the streets and found a home in the now infamous East Village Antifolk scene. Sal Sitting in the shadows of the stage rests two of Aberdeen's most talented musicians. As the haunting vocals lift out of the stage and intertwine with heart-achingly perfect guitar chords you know you're in the presence of something special. That something is Sal. Sal are an unsigned acoustic duo based in Aberdeen, Scotland. Consisting of Magnus Robertson on vocals, and Paul Tasker on guitar and backing vocals. They formed in November 2001 and frenetically established a reputation as an exciting and versatile live act. So far the band's music has taken Magnus and Paul across Scotland with gigs across Aberdeen, including a headline gig at the Lemon Tree, as well as higher profile gigs in the likes of Cabaret Voltaire in Edinburgh and the Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow In May 2002 they were asked to take part in the Tennants T-Break event at Lava in Aberdeen. Their performance that night was described as "beautiful songs played expertly on the acoustic guitar" by www.redt.co.uk. A month later and the guys broke onto the radio with a live radio session on the Del Franklin show on Northsound 1. Two of their songs from their EP were played across the North East. These were "Sunshine Morning Smile" and "Missing in Action". Another of their tracks, "Last Miles", is featured on a Radio Scotland website called Celtic Roots. In January of this year Sal performed at a series of high profile showcases in Glasgow, including a performance on the Danny Kyle stage as part of the "Celtic Connections" festival, which earned them a special commendation. They then appeared as finalists in the Daily Record 192 Big Break song writing competition. Sal's material combines all the elements of contemporary song writing with both the power of the delta blues and beauty of Celtic folk. The power and beauty of hearing Sal is in the comparisons that can be drawn from a wide range of established acts yet still with the ability and imagination to retain their own sense of purpose. The media have taken these boys to their hearts: "Beautifully chilled out songs with depth and feeling" Aberdeen Evening Express "Excellently played, sung and arranged with a very classic feel" Session in Scotland DJ, Vic Galloway. "These boys take originality and squeeze it through your ears" www.eatthismusic.com With pitch perfect music from Paul and the soulful harmonies from Magnus Sal are reminiscent of a contemporary John Martyn times two.Sal are currently recording songs for their debut album at Arc Studios in Mintlaw Aberdeenshire.
  13. I''m delighted to say that London based singer song writer Gemma Ray has joined the bill. She played quite a few date on the Noah John tour last year. check the sound mp3's & the pictures nice....... www.gemmaray.co.uk
  14. thanks for that vote of confidence, i'll get practicing for Sunday night now. All the knock em dead electro dance moves have been put inplace, so its a all singing & dancing chilli
  15. At leat you didn't say my singing was shocking, unlike a certain Philip Jeck fan who was standing right next to mre @ Puerto Muerto. I was just enjoying myself. As far as Phillipe Petit's set this time, i am sure he will mix classic female vocals & overlay with Joy Division New Order, Smiths etc with amazing results. Songs within songs & true improvisation.
  16. sorry you may have missed this electronic improvisers extraordinaire, this Sunday night @ Drakes These guys are fabulous & not a guitar in sight, read on for enlightenment. si-cut.db (live) aka Douglas Benford has had so many guises in the past, not to mention side projects and collaborations, that you might be forgiven for being more familiar with his label and music night SPRAWL. Douglas did a lot of experimenting in the 80s with pop and ambient music, moving into more full-on instrumental dance music in the late 80s, with the whole "acid house" revolution. He released a load of 12"s under the SIDECUT>>DB moniker, working with artists such as St Etienne's Sarah Cracknell, Momus and Scanner. Gradually this metamorphosed into si-{cut}.db, in the kind of 'intelligent electronica' guise. Asked if he has a 'musical vision' as such, Douglas seems again to suggest a strong unwillingness to compromise. "Although it is difficult to know whether what one produces will stand the test of time, I don't really care about that, I just do it for myself at the time. I always start with the question 'what do I want to hear?' rather than what should I play to please other people...I make music that I would want to go out and buy". His music reflects his interests in dub/sound processing, but still rooted in melody and rhythm. " A lot of the sounds were fragments of the sound of wood splintered and broken, although they are integrated to such a degree that you can't really tell what they are." He's keen to move the sound on further, whether on his own, or through collaborations, which help him 'think and work differently': Again testimony to his disciplined work ethic is the number of international gigs he's done recently, playing new material out live in the US, France, Germany, Australia and Spain. Not surprisingly, his music seems to have accrued a rather cosmopolitan flavour: "in the US I am presumed to be Canadian, in France I was asked if I was German. So it's good not to be associated with English music!' With that in mind, it's not surprising that Douglas's idea of a compliment is to be told that he sounds like 'Jan Jelenik on a good day', which someone bestowed on him in Glasgow. But with increasing attention being paid to him in the music press over in the UK, with accolades from the likes of Time Out and The Wire, he may not be able to abstain from giving his music a nationality for very much longer. ://home.earthlink.net/~efrans/benford/ Phillipe Petite (DJ set) Philippe has chosen to use his e-mail address, ip@bip-hop.com, as his "live" alias to keep it easy, and avoid pretentiousness too often encountered among DJ circles. According to him a DJ is not only an instrument for dancing but as a living musical library he should also take his audience to a new cultural trip/discovery. Philippe wants to entertain listeners and to open new "doors of perception", to create a virtual world to enable them to forget about their own existence for a short while. Philippe tries to tell us a story, with a beginning and an end. The content of the mix is obviously of critical importance, but the DJ's technique should never overflow its creative aspect (inspiration); however, it must bring the live touch to the fluid sequence music to give birth in the end, to a unique and truly lively performance. DJ ip@bip-hop.com is specialized in mixing electronica, ambientism, avant hip-hop, dubby and minimal-techno in a plunderphonic way, essential part of different songs all mixed together to keep the rhythm alive. Using 2CD players + a laptop to add sci-fi, prepared guitar chords, various clicks and electro acoustic or field recordings in the background forming a tapestry of sound, running up to 6 different sources altogether to create a mess of asymetrical electrode. Topping it all he surfs through the waves of his mobile radio player ,improvising through radio frequencies, noises. With many levels going on at once, it's a great depth that he creates. Phillipe has been preparing a set using only music from all girl bands, very electro, rock but rhythmic and dance-floor, guaranteed to make girls scream.... there will be dancing! bip-hop.com

  18. We aim to please, Charlemagne's getting great press for his LP & his live shows
  19. here is the review Carl John, he of the versatile voice and upturned moustache, is the frontman of alt-country band Noahjohn, who specialise in frenzied hoe-downs and psychedelia. His colleagues, having just made an album berating George Bush, are currently taking a break from putting the world to rights with a pedal steel guitar - so to keep himself busy, John has created Charlemagne, a ared-down alter ego with a personality disorder. Throughout Charlemagne's self-titled debut album, John assumes various personalities and their emotional traumas. It's like an episode of Quantum Leap with a morally bankrupt ending. He finds frustration in a love affair with a junkie and becomes a murderer with a troubled conscience, the soft, authentic rhythms smothering the misery. Although Charlemagne is a one-man creation, John is accompanied on stage by an all female band who appear to have been recruited from a religious cult high in the Appalachian mountains. The drummer, A12, has a tattoo snaking between her cleavage - but she looks like a librarian next to the two backing vocalists. Wearing long polyester dresses of a kind last seen on satellite re-runs of 1970s sitcom Bless This House, Katie Did and Lady Bird add off-kilter harmonies to John's low, gentle voice, while sporadically knitting. Katie Did finishes off the bottom half of a pink bikini; Lady Bird makes a blue scarf. John is no cowboy himself. Dressed in a light brown suit, he looks as if he has wandered out of an old management training video. However, as he wades through the damaged psyches of his creations, he overcomes this superficial strangeness. He melts over the summery, west coast-meets-Nashville sound of Holland Daisy, whistling as the retro keyboard hums. Take the slow-dripping country waltz out of In Absentia and you're left with a pop song. Whether he is turning Angel of the Morning from a shrill MOR classic into a desperate plea, or tearing into the Noahjohn-influenced 1960s beat of Pink and Silver, John's new guises never fail to flatter him.

  21. My belief is that whilst there is tight financial constaints & financial scrutiny of the operation, the staff should be left free hand to get on with what they do best & thats to bring the BEST QUALITY entertainment to Aberdeen, whether its crappy tribute bands that pay the bills or more cutting edge idiosycratic artists that may not pay the bills. The mix can in the short term can be diluted to the bland, however in the medium/long term the Lemon Tree must be allowed to take chances programme wise. Additionally @ some stage in the near future perhaps the Regulars (customers) should be allowed to attend an open forum, so they can @ least voice their opinions of what is right & what is wrong from a punters viewpoint. It could be that one great idea may come this..................

A grainy, hopeful strain of folk rock, Philadelphia Songs gently explores the optimistic depths beyond the mournful work of melancholic touchstones Tom Waits and Nike Drake. Never maudlin nor bland despite its minimalist folk - and occasional slide - guitars Philadelphia Songs talks lovingly of Witmers adopted-home; his first-person narratives rich with nostalgia and lovingly scripted observations, hauntingly bringing to mind the work of the late Elliott Smith with its painful honesty. A literal patchwork of reserved melodies - run through with Witmers soft, warm burr - this debut British release is an unequivocal joy and pushes Witmer forward as a songwriter of considerable wealth. www.denisonwitmer.com MickelMass Local well-kent faces featuring a set which will be improvised psychedelic country & will compliment the evenings activities.
