Attention All Plonkers: New Scrumpy Coming Soon...

Apparently the technical term for someone that drinks scrumpy is a 'plonker', so for all you plonkers out there...

TRADITIONAL | Draught

Based on an original 1904 recipe, Thatchers Traditional is a hazy, unfiltered and uncarbonated cider, but has a natural, subtle sparkle. Produced from a blend of English, home-grown bittersweet apples, it will appeal to those who enjoy real Somerset cider at its very best.

6.0% vol (but may vary upwards with age)

In addition we plan to replace Strongbow with another Thatchers brew:

GOLD | Draught

Gold tastes as good as it looks - a crisp, refreshing cider with a smooth 'appley' taste and a bright sparkle. Produced primarily from English bittersweet apples, and undergoing the traditional cool filtration process, creates a cider with real character.

4.8% vol

Gold doesn't qualify as a real cider, due to being filtered and carbonated, but it is a much higher quality keg product than Strongbow, by virtue of being made from fruit (from Thatchers own orchard) rather than concentrate. It also free of all chemical waste... err I mean additives.

Of course, never fear Addlestones will be retained, and all 3 ciders shall sell alongside each other!

We're hoping that offering Thatchers Traditional as alternative real cider that's not quite as 'extreme' as Addlestones, being lighter in colour, not quite as cloudy, and with a little more sparkle, that we can shift more carbonated cider drinkers over to the real stuff. Perhaps we'll convert a few other people too!

Traditional will be priced the same as Addlestones, and the Gold will be priced the same as Strongbow.

Traditional should be with us this coming week, the Gold will probably take slightly longer as we have to fit a new font and coupler, and also sell the remaining Strongbow stock - so get drinking those pints of diesel (or whatever snakebite and black is called in the 21st Century)!

We also got the Thatchers Gold hooked up last night, which is a direct replacement for Strongbow etc. It's a clear, carbonated, and chilled cider but the big difference is that it contains nothing artifical and is made from crushed and pressed apples grown in Thatchers orchard as opposed to apple concentrate. And WOW what a drink. EASILY the best draught keg cider that I have ever tasted. A beautifully pure smooth refreshing taste, and not too acidic. The difference between this stuff andf Strongbow, Blackthorn etc is incredible. First impressions are that it's unlikely to lead to a hangover, although I didn't drink enough to test that to the extreme. But what it does do is that mega-cider-kick-in-the-pants-hows-your-father effect. It's only 4% but even a couple of pints send you off on a soaring high. Highly recommended ;)

Thatchers Gold can currently be found masquerading on the Strongbow fonts until such time as it's own dispense equipment arrives.

The Thatchers Traditional went on handpump No 6. in place of the Thatchers Heritage. First impressions are that this is lacking in taste compared with the Heritage. I'm going to check with Thatchers just in case they sent us the wrong thing again because the casks are only marked "Dry Cider 6%"... and I wouldn't rule out a cock up! In the meantime we'd appreciate your feedback, but as things stand it looks like we'll be going back to the Heritage.
