Steve Temple
I've said it once and I'll say it again: no-one whistles albums. Singles make the world go round: you don't have to pay money, you can listen to them on the radio, in the cafes and in the clubs, and they can define a summer or even a generation, or they can be your soundtrack to a week, and forgotten after that. You don't have to buy into a particular artist to be seduced by 3 minutes of their work. The important bands in history are those whose singles will be remembered rather than their albums: Elvis Pressley, The Kinks, The Jam, Marc Bolan, Blondie, Prince.....Bands who don't release singles should be ignored, and it is a just world that won't remember them (bar Led Zeppelin). So in response to the Top 10 albums thread, let's have your top 10 singles since the advent of pop music. Your choices should mean something to a wider demographic than yourself. In order: 1, Ceremony - New Order2, The Fly - U23, Totally Wired - The Fall4, The Sweetest Girl - Scritti Politti5, Transmission - Joy Division6, Heart of Glass - Blondie7, Shipbuilding - Robert Wyatt8, Volunteers - Jefferson Airplane9, Milkman of Human Kindness - Billy Bragg10, Substitute - The Who

Having said that you don't need to buy them, there are those that you won't hear on daytime radio, and have to buy, like some of those above, and like those I'll buy tomoro: Apply Some Pressure - Maximo Park,Decent Days and Nights - The Futureheads, as well as the current Bikini Atoll one, and Shiver by Natalie Imbruglia

The Doors - Touch MeIsrael is an album track at best, it should never have been a single. And you should list the song titles first, because it is not the artists you are appreciating with the single, as you needn't like the artist to like the single, as I said earlier. Steve Temple
god bless mtv2....back when it started anyway. I think the music video is the only hope for the pop single, the best chance new releases have for exposure, considering the falling-off in interest in radio and the charts
