Top Ten Singles

Steve Temple

Recommended Posts

I've said it once and I'll say it again: no-one whistles albums. Singles make the world go round: you don't have to pay money, you can listen to them on the radio, in the cafes and in the clubs, and they can define a summer or even a generation, or they can be your soundtrack to a week, and forgotten after that. You don't have to buy into a particular artist to be seduced by 3 minutes of their work. The important bands in history are those whose singles will be remembered rather than their albums: Elvis Pressley, The Kinks, The Jam, Marc Bolan, Blondie, Prince.....Bands who don't release singles should be ignored, and it is a just world that won't remember them (bar Led Zeppelin).

So in response to the Top 10 albums thread, let's have your top 10 singles since the advent of pop music. Your choices should mean something to a wider demographic than yourself.

In order:

1, Ceremony - New Order

2, The Fly - U2

3, Totally Wired - The Fall

4, The Sweetest Girl - Scritti Politti

5, Transmission - Joy Division

6, Heart of Glass - Blondie

7, Shipbuilding - Robert Wyatt

8, Volunteers - Jefferson Airplane

9, Milkman of Human Kindness - Billy Bragg

10, Substitute - The Who

1. Wildhearts - Caffeine Bomb. Soundtrack to a whole summer, and a landmark in British rock

2. Type O Negative - Black No. 1. Goths have a sense of humour too.

3. Deftones - My Own Summer (Shove It). Backed with the Jonah mix of Be Quiet (And Drive).

4. Prodigy - Smack My Bitch Up. Awesome tune, rocked that Summer silly....

5. White Zombie - ThunderKiss 65. For the bassline and spoken word intro alone!

6. Sex Pistols - Anarchy In The UK. Obviously

7. The Clash - White Riot. Ditto.

8. Weezer - Buddy Holly. Perfect pop song

9. Therapy? - Knives. Heralded T?'s arrival on the mainstream stage.

10. CIV - Can't Wait ONe Minute More / Shelter - Here We Go.

Bullshit that singles are more important than albums, mind.....

That is a decent mix of songs with popular appeal, and songs with a more specific importance, songs that you have to seek out to hear. Having said that you don't need to buy them, there are those that you won't hear on daytime radio, and have to buy, like some of those above, and like those I'll buy tomoro: Apply Some Pressure - Maximo Park,

Decent Days and Nights - The Futureheads, as well as the current Bikini Atoll one, and Shiver by Natalie Imbruglia

Israel is an album track at best, it should never have been a single. And you should list the song titles first, because it is not the artists you are appreciating with the single, as you needn't like the artist to like the single, as I said earlier.
