I've been asked to organise a small (50 - 100 people) private gig on either March 26th, 27th or 28th. The Blue Lamp and Cellar 35 are unavailable on those dates and I've been unable to get a response from the Malt Mill or The Tunnels. Does anyone know of any pubs that I could contact? - the gig ideally needs to be in Aberdeen, preferably somewhere central. Thanks in advance.

Hi Scott, Are you mic'ing everything up or just vocals and kick drum? We run a Yamaha mixer through Mackie SRM450's and found that if you keep the speakers set at "Unity Gain" the top-dead-centre setting (should be marked with a "0" and have a physical "click"), keep your channel gain setting down on the mixer and control it all through the sliders, then you shouldn't get too much trouble with feedback. Also, your mics must be positioned behind your front-of-house speakers, otherwise it'll feedback like a bastard. Bring your levels upgradually and remember that harmonics and clarity are better than volume and gain. Behringer mixers are basically functional clones of the Mackies and are very much a hit or a miss regarding quality. I personally don't rate the newer Class-D Mackies either, though they make good stage monitors - but not as good as the old Laney one I sold you yonks ago I'd be inclined to invest in a better mixer - I've had Yamaha, Peavey, Mackie, Behringer and Soundcraft mixers over the years and I'd say that the first two were the best.

I live in Stirling (I work in Aberdeen and have digs in Cove Mon-Thurs) and it's a cracking place to live with good rail links to Glasgow and Edinburgh, so I can highly recommend it. I'd also echo Adam EW's sentiment about Falkirk and add Denny, Larkhall, Carluke, East Kilbride etc the the no-no list. With regards to your original question, I agree with most of what other poster have said. Do you have the opportunity of a wee reconnaissance trip? - perhaps friends or rels that you could stay with for a few weeks to see how it fits?

Hi, Our Kemnay-based band is looking for a new bassist. The music is a fairly eclectic mix of popular pub-friendly rock/soft rock numbers and the format is two female singers, two guitars, drums and of course bass! We have our own fully equipped practice area just outside Kemnay and practice nights are by mutual agreement (a couple of the guys work shifts). It's a pressure-free, banter-heavy vibe and it's always good fun. We're looking for a similar-minded, competent bassist who can pick up songs fairly quicky. Vocal ability is welcome, but not essential. We had our first (informal) gig last week - which went very well - and we're looking to do more. Please drop me a pm if you are interested.

I have a Mesa Boogie 5:25 Express Combo with a 10" speaker. I was asked to turn it down at a gig the Stonehaven Town Hall because it was too LOUD! It also fits in my Mini Cooper. I do agree with the points raised by the pro head/cab folks though. They DO look cool - and as much as anything, a stack or half-stack epitomises the very image of rock'n'roll. You can mix and match (Ohms not withstanding) for different sounds too. However, as one poster rightly pointed out, you're not going to get the most out of it in a gig at the Stab Inn - you'd need to be playing Isle of Wight!. The last time I used a Marshall half stack for a pub gig, I had the 25w attenuator on and couldn't feasibly turn the master volume above 3...and as we all know, the more you crank a valve amp, the better it sounds. There's a case for both.
