  1. All this talk about neds and minkers is unbelievable. Wise up! It's embarrassing! Can just imagine the papers.... "Plans for one of the most exciting musical developments that Aberdeen has ever seen were sensationally shelved last night. It appears that ticket sales have been severely hit as a direct result of music fans leading sheltered lives fearing for their safety....." Bring it on. And let us live in hope that Anton Newcombe, Jason Pierce and Thurston Moore decide that Aberdeen's a place that they'd really like to go to on their summer holidays....
  2. I think both of these bands are great additions to the festival, if in fact the rumours are true. Madness are guaranteed to bring a crowd, and you'll probably get a good mix of folk. Definite feel-good factor! As for Vesuvian, I think they're a cracking addition too. They're local and they're unique, and again, they're guaranteed to bring a big crowd, which again, is an extremely smart move from the organisers. I've received an early promo copy of their upcoming EP and it's huge. Massive psychedelic wall-of-sound-stuff, which I think will be great for a festival. Fingers crossed this thing gets the full go-ahead.
  3. Fair play to those involved for trying to get something like this off the ground, and I wish them every success. Due to the amounts of money that these bands/acts ask for up-front it's highly understandable that they have been cautious with annoucing the acts, especially as contracts will now be in place or close to being sealed. Fingers crossed that everything goes to plan and Aberdeen will have something to be proud of. And if anyone's scared of attending due to 'neds', I'm very sorry you feel that way. Best just stay in yer hoosie and play yer X-Box!
  4. Excellent B-side to upcoming Lucid Dream 7" single... The Lucid Dream - Devil Rides Out 'The Time and Space Machine' re-mix 7" version by The Lucid Dream on SoundCloud - Create, record and share your sounds for free
  5. Yeah, you would think that it would be a post-rock Mogwai fest with a name like that, but it's not! The track 'Your Love' is unbelievable, euphoric! 'Strange Days' is a belter too. Early I know, but like The Black Ryder album - which has yet to get a UK release - I think it's already a classic.
  6. Debut record from the Swedish band released two weeks ago. Best record I've heard since The Black Ryder's 2009 release 'Buy The Ticket, Take The Ride'. Highly recommend it for those who like My Bloody Valentine, The Beta Band, Ride and The Brian Jonestown Massacre etc.... YouTube - Youngteam - Daydreamer
  7. In association with Yellow Elevator Promotions, we are delighted to announce that The Lucid Dream will headline a show at Tunnels 2 on Saturday 18th June with support from local acts Vesuvian, The Carousels and His Name Is Codeine. Formed in Carlisle in 2008, The Lucid Dream came to most peoples' attention after their demo track 'I Got The Devil' featured on the excellent 'Open Your Mind' psychedelic compilation on Psilocybin Sounds, alongside the likes of The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Recent support slots to Spectrum (featuring Spacemen 3 founder Pete Kember), Crocodiles and The Aliens have also increased the group's reputation as a live act. The excellent 'In Your Eyes' EP was released in November and is available on iTunes, while the group are currently preparing for the spring single release of 'Love In My Veins'. These guys are definitely worth checking out, particularly for fans of the likes of Spacemen 3, The 13th Floor Elevators, The Cramps and anything else generally regarded as big and psychedelic! They're also fans of Carlisle Utd, who are fresh from their glorious win in The Johnstone's Paint Trophy! They're on a roll! They will be joined by local psych-rockers Vesuvian, complete with their huge Black Angels/Spacemen 3 influenced sound. This slot appears to be the perfect fit for the group as they make their long awaited return to the live circuit after being holed up in the studio recording their upcoming EP. After ploughing a seemingly lone psychedelic furrow on the local circuit in recent years, the lads will no doubt be looking forward to sharing a stage with kindred spaced-out spirits! The Carousels have taken the Byrdsian/Teenage Fanclub ethic on board and have constructed a cracking repertoire of expertly crafted songs bursting with soaring harmonies and melodies. Always worth catching live, the band have recently became a five-piece, adding a new dynamic to their sound. Cosmic Aberdeenshire Music. Last but by no means least are the excellent His Name Is Codeine. Sharing a similar love of the psychedelic/shoegaze sound so expertly showcased by the likes of The Black Ryder and The Black Angels, as well as the punchy, intense beat of The Kills, His Name Is Codeine's dark, brooding, haunting sound promises to make this one of the most exciting bills that the local scene has witnessed for a while. Will be delighted to see you there. The tunes blasted in between the acts will no doubt feature the very best of these top bands' record collections. Get yourself down! Hope you can make it! Cheers! 8. They're a band I've been meaning to get into for a while, given my love of all things fuzz! Any recommendations? Well into Ride, My Bloody Valentine, Dinosaur Jnr, Jesus & Mary Chain, Slowdive etc if that helps...................

  10. Your cultural commentary is spot on there, you can almost feel it growing up. I hate to use the word graveyard given that there are plenty of good musicians but that's what I've always felt Aberdeen is like. I still don't think it's completely outwith the realms of possibility for a local act to cause a bit of a stir - as I've said with Dundee - but it never seems to happen! Maybe that band is around the corner, who knows. There are certainly enough music lovers in the city and surroundings to at least jump on the bandwagon should a local act make a breakthrough - one needs only to look at the sell-out crowds at the Music Hall and AECC gigs etc to show this. But in terms of creating that initial buzz when a band is starting out, then, yeah, apathy is a good word. Driveblind is another band that I really liked, come to think of it. Forgot about them! I remember them supporting The Charlatans at The Music Hall after seeing them a few times before and was blown away. That was a definite 'Yes' moment growing up. And they pissed on the main support Chikinki who were terrible!!!!!!! Some more of that would be good. Just something! 8-)
  11. Oh absolutely, there have been plenty of bands that I have liked and really enjoyed going to see over the years - Phonefreak, Lady Mercedes, Star, Stuka etc - but my point is that I've always longed for a band to make a real breakthrough and really put Aberdeen on the map. I think it's scandalous for a city of our size that nothing's really happened. Of course, it doesn't have a divine right. As I say, pop culture and all its facets fascinates me (try saying that after a few shandies!!!) and I truly hope that one day, there will be an NME cover band for example, or a big feature on Aberdeen as the next movement or something, you know what I mean? It really baffles me actually!!!!
  12. Mate, they were recommended to me!! I just get annoyed sometimes on this site with dismissive sarcastic replies (and yes, guilty of that meself m'lud!). At least in your next post you've actually explained why you don't like them, which I respect. Growing up in Aberdeen, all my adult life I've been waiting for something to happen musically that genuinely excites me - there have been one or two flashes - but on the whole there's not been a lot. I really don't know why, given the size of the city and the talented musicians we have. Even Dundee's had it!! A buzz, a stir, anything! Even though probably 99% of the users of this forum hate The View, for example, they created a buzz, a stir, and put Dundee on the map. NME front covers, videos, tours etc etc. And all that started from a bunch of kids, handing Pete Doherty a demo tape at a gig - and then subsequently getting arrested! I completely accept that a lot of forum users here are not interested in this kind of thing, but I think it's great for a city. So here, with this band - though I admit, not from Aberdeen, and the argument probably falls at this point (!!!!) - I hear a bunch of kids trying to make - what I would term - really catchy music that has the potential to appeal to the masses. And then I think, ah, that's not bad, better keep an eye out for them. So to me, I thought it did sound like a breath of fresh air, that's all. I could be completely wrong of course, but I like them! Just a sucker for pop culture, that's all!
  13. Gee whizz man, you speak for everyone do you! I'm not worthy!
  14. Ok, I see. I like the melodies and the summery pop feel. More from the La's, Coral, Sergeant and C86-scene kinda angle I was thinking. I can't see the Oasis etc thing at all. But alas, 'tis the beauty of music! 8-) That's what it's all about though. Having a listen and seeing what you think. The Beatles being covered by my favourite band Ride - bliss!!! The Chameleons should've been huge, I don't know why they weren't to be honest.
  15. Britpop. What you mean like 'Girls who are boys, Who like boys to be girls Who do boys like they're girls, Who do girls like they're boys'? Can't see it myself!
  16. I know I've posted about this band before but they've posted up a couple of new tunes on their MySpace page - I think they're ace, especially the tune 'Write A Story'. From up Hopeman, Elgin way. Has anyone else seen them live or like their stuff? Their MySpace page is: the social chameleons on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Downloads Definitely worth a look.
  17. Alright folks, Just thought I would give you a wee heads up on this band from Morayshire that I've seen a few times now. They're called The Social Chameleons and I think they're really good, probably the best young band I've seen in Aberdeen for a long time. If yer into jingle-jangle melodic pop tunes, check them out. Very entertaining. Their MySpace is The Social Chameleons on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Downloads Cheers
  18. Definitely head across to this if you can. Luva Anna are always great value and The Social Chameleons are the best young band I've seen in Aberdeen for a long time. 8-)
  19. For anyone that thinks he's past it, I saw him on the 1st February headlining the Big Day Out in Perth, Australia, and I thought he was immense. Watched My Morning Jacket, who I thought were amazing, first time I'd ever seen them, and then the Arctic Monkeys who played directly before Young. Brilliant set, basically a Greatest Hits. He was wearing a oversize t-shirt and jeans, looked the scruffiest man at the festival but absolutely belted the tunes out. Total passion. Great balance in the set too from the likes of 'Hey Hey My My' nearly deafening you to the acousic 'Old Man ' and 'Heart of Gold' etc etc, ye ken the drill! Pity it's at the AECC though..............
  20. Oh aye, I ken this ene! 'Town Called Malice' by The Jam back on 2nd March 1982! Belter!
  21. On the subject, reading a cracking book just now : 'Can't Buy Me Love: The Beatles, Britain and America'. Not yer usual biographical account, a lot of sociology and history thrown in as well. There was a definite gap in my Beatles knowledge - probably because I think the Stones were cooler and prefer reading about Brian Jones etc - but an essential read. I do think it's fascinating how George Harrison was 25 in 1968 as the Beatles were nearing the end. It's quite difficult to get my head around! Achieving all that so young. Tremendous. Although I suppose you could say that about loads've people, Weller in The Jam for instance.............
  22. I was at Finsbury Park too, 2002 it was if memory serves right. I think what made that day as one of my best ever days was the overall quality of the line-up, it was more like an event to me, as opposed to the quality of Oasis' set. Although I think they played 'Columbia' - my favourite Oasis song - and that was immense. The line up was Proud Mary, The Coral, Cornershop, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and The Charlatans. Nae bad for an Oasis gig! One of my least clever moves occured on this day as a naive 20 year old, thinking it would be cool to wear my Argentina strip through North London. Knew something was wrong as I stepped on the tube and heard a few guys go 'What's with the Argie top?' and similarly walking through Arsenal country with folk spitting on the road and the police on their radios going 'Watch out for the guy in the Arentina shirt'. Safe to say not my cleverest move and thankful to my mate for lending me his jumper, or I could've got an absolute kick-in! What was I thinking!!! o_O
  23. Totally agree. That was immense. I did the same. Best I'd ever seen them.
  24. Oocha, that's a tough one! Hey Bulldog The Night Before I Am The Walrus Yer Blues Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)
